The VPS keeps the playback process running; YouTube handles delivery to viewers. Start with a modest test, check YouTube’s stream health and your VPS’s resource use, and confirm music and visual rights before broadcasting. No VPS size guarantees uninterrupted service, and YouTube’s monetization rules are separate from copyright permission.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with Live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- A Linux VPS with enough sustained outbound bandwidth, storage, and processing capacity for your chosen media and encoding settings. YouTube does not specify a universal CPU, RAM, or VPS price for this workload.
- FFmpeg, which reads media, encodes or remuxes it as needed, and sends it to YouTube. See the FFmpeg documentation.
- Marathi music and visual assets you own or are properly licensed to stream and archive, with written records of your rights.
- Your YouTube ingest URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in public scripts, repositories, screenshots, or logs.
A still cover image or restrained visual paired with stereo music is a much lighter encoding job than high-motion 1080p or 4K video. Choose settings based on what viewers need to see, then test the real workload rather than buying a VPS based on a generic CPU or RAM figure.
Choose a stream format and starting settings
Use RTMPS for an ordinary software-encoder setup
YouTube recommends RTMPS as a starting transport for ordinary encoder streams; its encryption protects the stream in transit. HLS and DASH serve different codec and higher-resolution use cases, but YouTube’s protocol comparison notes their segment-based latency is higher than RTMP. For an FFmpeg-based continuous music stream, begin with YouTube’s RTMPS ingest details in its encoder settings and protocol comparison.
Start modestly and validate
A practical initial test is 720p30 H.264 video at 6 Mbps, constant bitrate, with a two-second keyframe interval and AAC or MP3 audio. The 6 Mbps figure is YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate for 720p30, not a minimum VPS plan, a total network requirement, or a guarantee of quality. Leave room for audio, protocol overhead, and other traffic when checking the VPS’s sustained outbound allowance. If a still image is all the visual treatment requires, test whether a simpler output meets your needs; do not treat a lower bitrate as an official YouTube recommendation.

YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health. Higher resolution does not automatically improve a music stream with static cover art, while it can increase bitrate, transfer use, and encoding load.
Set up the YouTube stream and secure its key
- Enable Live streaming. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for the channel. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Copy the server/ingest URL and stream key provided for the stream. Keep the key private and out of version control and public-facing logs.
- Choose the ingest protocol and settings. For a typical software encoder, use RTMPS and configure the encoder to match the output settings you intend to test.
- Check visibility before a long session. Run a short private or unlisted test, inspect YouTube’s stream-health feedback, and confirm the stream is visible and the audio plays as expected.
Prepare the music, visual, and playback loop
Clear rights before uploading
Confirm that your rights cover streaming the music and visuals in the territories where viewers may watch, as well as any archive you intend to keep. Keep written evidence of ownership or licenses. For licensed third-party works, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist before a long test. A license alone may not stop YouTube from interrupting a live stream when its automated systems detect a match.

Organize files for predictable playback
Upload or copy the media to the VPS, then verify that every file is readable and that your playlist order is deliberate. Test transitions between tracks, gaps, and the end-to-start loop. If you use a static visual, confirm that it remains on screen throughout the audio program. File formats and whether you can avoid re-encoding affect the exact FFmpeg command; there is no one command that is correct for every asset library and output treatment.
Install FFmpeg and send a test stream
- Install FFmpeg from a trusted package source. Confirm it runs and supports the codecs required by your assets and output settings. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for the options applicable to your build.
- Place media on the VPS. Check file permissions, available disk space, and the playlist or input paths. Keep credentials out of shared directories and command histories when possible.
- Build the playback and encoding command for your assets. Configure input handling, looping or playlist behavior, the chosen visual, video and audio codecs, bitrate, keyframe interval, and RTMPS destination. Insert the private stream key only in a protected configuration or secret mechanism; do not publish a command containing it.
- Run a short private or unlisted test. Check YouTube stream health, image and audio continuity, loop transitions, FFmpeg logs, CPU and memory use, disk growth, and outbound network use.
- Adjust and repeat with representative material. Test the most demanding visual and audio segments you expect to broadcast. Confirm that the VPS and its plan can sustain the load and that transfer limits and provider rules fit the schedule.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends advance testing and stream-health monitoring. The appropriate FFmpeg options depend on the media formats, whether re-encoding is needed, and the intended output, so validate the actual command rather than treating an example copied from another setup as production-ready.

Keep the process running and plan for recovery
A VPS can keep the encoder running while your home computer is off, but a process supervisor cannot guarantee an uninterrupted stream. Run FFmpeg under a service manager or equivalent supervisor with a restart policy, retain useful logs, and add a basic process or stream-health alert. A restart can recover from some local process failures; it does not prove that YouTube is receiving or displaying a healthy stream.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health status as well as the local FFmpeg process.
- Watch disk space, outbound connectivity, and the provider’s transfer allowance.
- Rehearse recovery after a VPS reboot and check that the service starts with the correct media and credentials.
- Schedule maintenance deliberately so updates or asset changes do not cause unexpected interruptions.
Choose between one long broadcast and planned sessions
YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours. Do not rely on a continuous broadcast longer than that becoming one complete archived video. If retaining the full program matters, plan separate recordings or shorter sessions and verify the archive behavior that matters to your channel.

A single long session reduces routine intervention, while planned shorter sessions make it easier to manage archives and create deliberate recovery or maintenance windows. Neither choice removes the need to monitor the encoder and stream.

Live-stream copyright checks can interrupt a technically healthy feed
YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can replace the stream with a placeholder or lead to interruption or termination. If you have permission to use a work, ask the rights owner to allowlist your channel through Content ID; do not assume that a license by itself prevents a match from disrupting the broadcast. Permission does not promise YPP eligibility
YouTube evaluates originality and reused content at the channel level, separately from copyright enforcement. Its monetization policy says collections of songs from different artists may fail reused-content review even when the channel has permission. Repetitive or mass-produced programming can also be ineligible under its “inauthentic content” policy, which YouTube updated on July 15, 2025. Original music, meaningful curation or presentation, commentary, or other genuine viewer value may help distinguish a channel, but only YouTube decides eligibility. Estimate VPS costs from your actual workload
There is no universal VPS price or specification for a 24/7 Marathi music stream. Compare plans using the factors that affect this specific setup:
- Encoding load: benchmark sustained CPU and memory use with your selected codec, resolution, and representative visual motion.
- Transfer: confirm sustained outbound capacity and any monthly transfer allowance. A video bitrate is not the same as the total network requirement.
- Storage: estimate the space required for the music catalog, visual assets, logs, and any local recordings.
- Operations: include time for setup, monitoring, updates, troubleshooting, and recovery tests.
- Provider terms: check the current plan’s resource limits and rules for sustained streaming workloads before committing.
Test the intended stream on the candidate VPS before settling on a plan. The 720p30 bitrate recommendation is a YouTube ingest setting, not a cost estimate or a VPS sizing rule.
