The example below loops a prepared video indefinitely at 720p30. Rehearse it privately, check YouTube’s preview and stream health, and only then make the event public.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of the planned broadcast.
- A current FFmpeg build with
libx264available if you use the example command. - A prepared video file containing both audio and video, plus a stable upload connection that can sustain your selected bitrate.
- Permission to stream the specific recording, performance, composition, lyrics and visuals, including permission for any resulting archive. Devotional subject matter does not by itself make a recording public domain or copyright-free.
There is no special YouTube codec or bitrate requirement for Tamil devotional content. Choose settings according to your media and connection, not the language or genre.
Create the YouTube Live event and get its stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live to enter Live Control Room. Schedule an event if you want to promote it in advance.
- Create or select the event’s encoder stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that specific event; prefer the RTMPS URL when YouTube offers one. The current server address can vary, so use what Studio displays rather than an assumed ingest host.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not post it, put it in a public script, or show it in a screenshot. Enter it only in the encoder destination.
YouTube’s current guidance recommends RTMPS, which it describes as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance and YouTube’s instructions for streaming with an encoder.
Prepare the devotional programme
Choose a finite programme or a loop
Use an audio-video file for a prerecorded programme. In the command below, -re paces file reading at its native rate so it is sent in real time; -stream_loop -1, placed before the input, repeats that input indefinitely. Remove -stream_loop -1 if the programme should end after one play. Rehearse the transition from the end to the beginning: an awkward cut, silence or abrupt change in devotional visuals will repeat throughout a continuous loop.

If your source is audio-only
The example applies a video filter and therefore expects an input video stream. For audio-only devotional material, first combine the audio with a still image or other visual in an audio-video file, or construct a suitable FFmpeg input arrangement. Do not apply a video filter to an input that has no video stream. Check synchronization and the visual result in a rehearsal.
Check rights for the actual assets
Verify that your permission covers the particular recording and performance as well as the underlying composition and lyrics, and that it allows both live transmission and archiving. Check visual assets separately. YouTube’s technical setup instructions cannot determine whether a specific Tamil devotional recording is cleared for your use.

Send a prepared video file with FFmpeg
Replace INPUT.mp4 with a file you control. Set YT_INGEST to the current RTMPS server address and stream key from your event. This shell example stores the destination in an environment variable rather than writing the key into the command itself; environment variables are not a substitute for protecting access to your machine or shell session.
export YT_INGEST='rtmps://YOUR_CURRENT_INGEST_ADDRESS/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i INPUT.mp4
-vf "scale=1280:720:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1280:720:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,setsar=1"
-r 30 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-b:v 4M -maxrate 4M -bufsize 8M -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "$YT_INGEST"
This profile fits the image inside a 1280×720, 16:9 canvas without stretching it, encodes H.264 video at 30 frames per second and targets 4 Mb/s video. The 60-frame GOP at 30 fps gives a two-second keyframe interval. Audio is AAC stereo at 128 kb/s and 44.1 kHz. The input must have both audio and video, and the FFmpeg build must include libx264. If the source already matches the output requirements, the scaling and padding may not be necessary.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264, H.265 or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS; constant bitrate; and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Its table lists 4 Mb/s for H.264 720p30, and 5 Mb/s minimum and 14 Mb/s recommended for H.264 1080p30. For stereo audio, its advanced settings recommend 128 kb/s at 44.1 kHz. These are platform settings, not a guarantee: pick a rate the actual upload connection can sustain and verify it during a rehearsal. The figures are from YouTube Help as checked in 2026; the page does not state a publication year. Consult the current YouTube settings table before the event.
FFmpeg documents RTMP/RTMPS output, real-time input pacing and indefinite input looping. Match your command to the address in Studio and the installed FFmpeg build; the available options can depend on how FFmpeg was built. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation and FFmpeg command-line documentation.

Rehearse, start and monitor the stream
- Run the command with representative programme material and wait for YouTube to receive the encoder feed.
- Check the Live Control Room preview for the right image, sound, framing and audio-video synchronization. Review the stream-health messages and correct problems before going public.
- For a scheduled event, select Go Live in YouTube when the preview and health status are satisfactory. Starting FFmpeg sends the feed; it does not replace the final go-live action in a scheduled workflow.
- Keep FFmpeg running and monitor YouTube’s health feedback while the event is live. A microphone is optional for a prerecorded programme; it is relevant if you add live vocals or spoken introductions.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If your broadcast may run longer, plan how you will preserve any recording you need rather than relying on that automatic archive behavior. Check the encoder setup guidance for the current Live Control Room workflow.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot connect or YouTube receives no feed | The destination URL or key is wrong, stale or copied from a different event; RTMPS may not match the selected server. | Copy the current server URL and key from the event in Live Control Room. Keep the key private and confirm the destination is quoted correctly in YT_INGEST. |
| FFmpeg reports an unavailable encoder | The installed build does not include libx264. |
Use an FFmpeg build with libx264 enabled, or select an encoder available in your build and verify it is supported by YouTube’s current settings guidance. |
| Audio works but the video is missing, or FFmpeg reports a filter error | The input may be audio-only, while this command expects a video stream for its scaling filter. | Make an audio-video file by adding a still image or other visual, or adapt the input/filter arrangement. Rehearse the result before the event. |
| Video is stretched, cropped or has unwanted borders | The source aspect ratio differs from the 16:9 output canvas. | The example scales to fit and pads the remaining canvas rather than stretching the image. Review the preview and adjust the visual layout if needed. |
| Health warnings, stutters or dropped frames | The connection may not sustain the selected video bitrate consistently. | Rehearse on the same connection and lower the output bitrate or resolution if needed. Check the current YouTube table and Live Control Room feedback rather than assuming the nominal upload speed is sustainable. |
| The stream ends when the file finishes | The command is configured for finite playback, or the loop option is missing or placed after the input. | For continuous repetition, put -stream_loop -1 before the input it applies to. Remove it when the programme is intended to end. |
| The picture repeats but the audio drifts or cuts awkwardly | Loop boundaries or independent audio/video looping may not align. | Test the complete loop and synchronization with representative media. If looping audio and video independently, use a suitable input/filter arrangement and verify it in a rehearsal. |
