To keep subtitles visible throughout a continuous YouTube stream, burn them into each prerecorded video before you queue it for playback. The text becomes part of the video picture, so viewers do not need to turn on a subtitle track. The workflow has two stages: render and review each subtitled file with FFmpeg, then play the prepared files through OBS Media Sources and verify the actual YouTube stream setup.
Burned-in subtitles or a selectable subtitle track?
| Approach | What viewers see | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Burned into the picture (hard subtitles) | Text is rendered onto the video frames and remains visible as part of the image. | It cannot be switched off or restyled by viewers, and the video must be processed and encoded. FFmpeg’s filter documentation describes the subtitle filter used for hardcoding. |
| Separate subtitle track (soft subtitles) | Viewers may be able to enable, disable, or select a track, depending on support. | Behavior depends on the container, stream, and player. FFmpeg documents separate WebVTT subtitle renditions for HLS, but that does not establish compatibility with every YouTube Live path. FFmpeg’s formats documentation |
For subtitles that should always appear, burn them into the video. YouTube Studio’s subtitle controls are for adding subtitles to a video; uploading a sidecar caption file there is not the same as rendering text into the frames of a separate continuous live feed. YouTube Help: Add subtitles & captions
Prepare the video and timed subtitle file
Start with the original prerecorded clip and a subtitle file whose timings match that exact clip. SRT and ASS are common inputs for the FFmpeg workflow described here. If the captions are untimed, create or synchronize them before rendering; text without display timings cannot be reliably placed over the right moments.
YouTube Help describes upload, manual-entry, and auto-sync workflows for subtitles on videos. YouTube says auto-sync is limited to supported speech-recognition languages and is not recommended for videos over an hour or with poor audio. Those tools can help prepare captions, but the finished timed file still needs to be rendered into the video for hard subtitles.

Render a short test with FFmpeg
For an SRT file, a basic example is:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf subtitles=subtitle.srt output.mp4
The subtitles video filter draws subtitle text over the frames. FFmpeg’s official documentation covers hardcoding subtitles with the filter. A technical tutorial, updated September 27, 2026, documents this syntax and styling options; it reports that its examples were run with FFmpeg 8.1 on September 26, 2026. These are example commands, not a claim that they have been tested on your computer. FFmpeg is continuously developed, so behavior can change; check the documentation for the version you have installed.
Styling and ASS files
The tutorial documents using ASS style fields through force_style with the subtitles filter, and using the ass filter for ASS input. It also documents font handling and a fontsdir option for ASS. For example, a style override can be added to the filter expression; exact field names, escaping, font availability, and command-line quoting can vary with the shell and input. Refer to the tutorial’s examples and FFmpeg filter documentation rather than assuming one command will work unchanged on every system.

Burn-in changes the video frames, so the video must be encoded; it cannot simply copy the original video stream unchanged. Audio may often be passed through in practical workflows, but exact stream mapping and codecs depend on your files and output requirements. The sources do not establish one universal command for those choices. Render a short sample before processing a full library.

- Subtitle timing against speech and scene changes.
- Legibility over bright, busy, or high-contrast imagery.
- Placement inside the visible safe area, without clipping or covering important action.
- Font availability and whether the rendered style matches your intent.
- Output playback and audio synchronization.
If anything is wrong, adjust the timed captions or styling and render again from the clean source. Do not discard the original video or caption file: burned text is part of the picture and cannot be removed from that rendered version.
Queue the prepared videos in OBS
OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation describes playing video files in a scene and provides playlist ordering and shuffle controls. Add the already-rendered files as media sources, arrange the desired order, and review the playlist behavior in OBS before sending it to YouTube. OBS also documents a subtitle-track display setting for media sources, but that is a separate-track option; it is not needed for text already burned into the picture. OBS Project: Media Sources

- Prepare the scene. In OBS, add the video files as Media Sources and set their order or shuffle behavior using the available playlist controls.
- Check transitions and playback. Observe how your sources behave when a clip ends and the next one begins. Confirm that the playlist arrangement suits your intended continuous program.
- Configure the YouTube Live connection for your account. Connect the OBS output using the stream setup and key provided in your YouTube Live workflow. Stream keys, ingest settings, latency, looping, and recovery are environment-specific; the cited documentation does not establish one universal configuration.
- Run a suitable test. Verify a private, unlisted, or otherwise appropriate test stream using the actual account and ingest configuration. Check the captions, clip transitions, audio, and whether the stream behaves as expected before relying on the setup continuously.
Copyright and YouTube subtitle expectations
Burning captions into a file changes how text is presented; it does not grant rights to the video, music, or other material. Use content you have the right to stream and review the applicable YouTube rules for your content. Likewise, a sidecar subtitle upload in YouTube Studio should not be treated as a substitute for rendering captions into prerecorded clips that are being sent through a separate live setup.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No subtitles appear in the output | Subtitle file path, filter syntax, or file format may not be resolving. | Check the input path and filter expression, confirm the caption file is timed and readable, and render a short sample. Consult the FFmpeg filter documentation for the installed version. |
| Text appears at the wrong time | Caption timings do not match the particular video cut. | Compare the subtitle timestamps with the clip and correct or synchronize the caption file before rendering again. |
| Font or styling is wrong | The selected font may be unavailable, or style overrides may not be interpreted as expected. | Confirm font availability and review the ASS styling or font-directory options described by the FFmpeg tutorial. Render and inspect another short sample. |
| Subtitles are difficult to read or clipped | Text styling or placement is unsuitable for the footage or visible frame. | Adjust styling and placement, then review bright, detailed scenes and frame edges in the rendered file. |
| OBS does not play the files as expected | Media-source or playlist behavior differs from the intended sequence. | Check the OBS Media Sources settings, playlist order, and transitions in a test scene before streaming. |
| The YouTube stream does not behave as expected | The account’s stream setup or ingest configuration may be incorrect or differ from assumptions. | Verify the actual YouTube Live setup and stream key for the account, then test the complete path. No single ingest or recovery configuration is established for every setup. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a computer, OBS, or home connection running, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos as a continuous YouTube stream from the cloud. First burn subtitles into your video files as described above; StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and does not stream from a camera.
