You can present a recorded church service as a scheduled YouTube Live event by playing the video file through encoder software on a Raspberry Pi and sending the feed to the event’s YouTube stream URL with its stream key. Start the encoder before the service, check the Live Control Room preview and audio/video, then click Go live. YouTube documents the event and ingest workflow; Raspberry Pi documents relevant H.264 encoding capabilities, but neither guarantees a particular Pi, operating-system image or FFmpeg setup will work without rehearsal.
What you need before scheduling the service
- The final service recording as a local file the Pi’s encoder software can read.
- A Raspberry Pi and encoder software capable of reading the file, pacing playback as a live feed and sending it to YouTube. Compatibility depends on the Pi model, software and media; test your exact setup.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected resolution and bitrate. Ethernet may be useful if available, but the connection still needs testing.
- Access to YouTube Studio and the event’s stream URL and stream key.
- A person who can monitor playback, sound, picture, network status and the YouTube preview during the service.
Decide whether the congregation should see the service as public, unlisted or private. Since the video is prerecorded, tell viewers that it is a recorded service being presented at a scheduled time rather than implying the footage is happening live.
Schedule the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream.
- Set the event’s title, description, privacy and intended start time. Scheduling provides a watch page viewers can visit and an opportunity to receive reminders.
- Locate the event’s stream URL and stream key. These are the connection details the encoder uses to send the feed to YouTube.
YouTube’s interface labels can change, so follow the current Live Control Room controls rather than relying on incidental menu wording. The event is not ready for the congregation simply because it has been scheduled: the Pi still has to connect, and you should verify the preview before selecting Go live.
Configure the Pi and check encoder settings
Choose encoder software that can read the recording, send it at a live pace, and connect to YouTube’s ingest server using the event’s stream URL and stream key. Prefer RTMPS when the chosen encoder supports it; YouTube recommends it because it encrypts the stream in transit. The YouTube encoder settings guidance is the compatibility reference for the outgoing feed:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Video codec: H.264 for a straightforward SDR stream.
- Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate: choose from YouTube’s table for the selected resolution and frame rate. There is no single bitrate that is right for every resolution or connection; test upload capacity and leave headroom.
- Audio: use AAC or MP3 as supported by the selected ingest protocol and encoder.
YouTube transcodes incoming live video for viewers’ devices, so prioritize a stable, supported input over choosing the highest possible resolution. Run an upload-speed test under conditions similar to the event and verify that the connection can sustain the chosen bitrate.
What Raspberry Pi documentation establishes
Raspberry Pi documentation describes FFmpeg/libav support for audio and video encoding, with hardware H.264 encoding used when available. Raspberry Pi’s technical note documents the Pi 4 hardware encoder path as h264_v4l2m2m. This establishes a relevant capability, not a validated end-to-end church-streaming configuration. It does not establish that a generic command, OS image, Pi model or recording format will work without setup and testing. Check current documentation for the model and software you intend to use; do not assume older Raspberry Pi encoder examples remain suitable.

Protect the stream key
YouTube Help explains that stream keys “tell your encoder where to send your feed and let YouTube accept it.” Treat the key like a credential: do not expose it in public screenshots, shared scripts or unattended plaintext logs. If it is exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room using YouTube’s stream settings guidance, then update the encoder with the replacement.
Rehearse, preview and go live
- Rehearse with the actual recorded service and the intended Pi, software, network and YouTube event. Check that the file plays from beginning to end as intended, that audio and video stay in sync, and that playback starts and ends at the right points.
- Set up the encoder ahead of the scheduled time and start sending the feed early enough to inspect it. YouTube recommends setting up encoders ahead of time and checking the Live Control Room preview.
- Confirm the preview shows the correct video and that the audio is audible and appropriate. Monitor the stream’s health and watch for playback or network interruptions.
- Check the event’s watch page from another device and confirm that viewers can access it with the chosen privacy setting.
- When the scheduled event is ready, click Go live in the Live Control Room. Keep a person monitoring playback, sound, picture, network status and the preview during the service.
- At the end, end the event in YouTube and stop the encoder from sending. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
A file-based stream still needs an operator: a scheduled start does not remove the need to notice stalled playback, lost audio, a dropped connection or a problem on the viewer-facing page.

Rights and publishing checks
Before publishing, confirm that the church has the rights and permissions needed for music, readings and other material in the recording. YouTube requires streams to follow its policies, but there is no universal church-specific copyright conclusion: requirements depend on the material and the rights involved. Check with rights holders and consult the relevant platform guidance when unsure.
Troubleshooting the Pi-to-YouTube stream
| Symptom | Possible cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No incoming preview | The encoder is not sending, or the event connection details do not match. | Confirm that the encoder is running and that it has the correct event stream URL and stream key. Check its connection status and the Live Control Room. |
| Preview appears, but the scheduled event is not visible to viewers | The event may not have been taken live, or its privacy setting may restrict access. | Check the event’s privacy setting and watch page from another device. For the scheduled stream, select Go live only after checking the preview. |
| Video stutters or the stream health degrades | The outgoing bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or the connection may be fluctuating. | Compare the chosen bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the resolution and frame rate, test upload capacity, leave headroom and rehearse over the intended connection. |
| Audio is missing or out of sync | The recording, encoder settings or playback path may not be handling audio as expected. | Test the actual service file end to end. Check audio codec support, audible playback and sync in the Live Control Room preview before the service. |
| The encoder cannot play or send the file as intended | The media format or chosen software and Pi combination may not be compatible. | Verify that the encoder can read the file and pace it as a live source. Raspberry Pi’s documented H.264 capability alone does not validate the full workflow; test the selected model, software and recording together. |
| The stream key may have been exposed | The credential appeared in a screenshot, shared script or log. | Reset the key in the Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder. Keep the new key private. |
