YouTube chat replay is attached to a stream’s archive, not guaranteed just because a broadcast stays live. YouTube warns that a stream lasting more than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive at all, so its chat replay may be unavailable too. The 12-hour warning concerns archiving; YouTube’s guidance does not say a live broadcast automatically stops at that point.
How YouTube chat replay works
After a live stream ends, Live chat replay can display messages alongside the stream archive as they appeared during the broadcast. YouTube says chat replay is on by default for stream archives, but creators can turn it off in the video’s customization settings. If no archive exists, there is no archived video beside which chat replay can appear.
Once the stream has ended, viewers cannot continue using its live chat as an interactive conversation. Chat replay is a separate, archived view of the messages.
What the 12-hour warning means
YouTube Help says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; exceeding 12 hours makes capture uncertain. This is not stated as a forced cutoff for the broadcast itself.

DVR is a different feature: it lets viewers pause or rewind while a stream is live. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable after a stream runs longer than 12 hours. That limitation does not establish whether an archive or chat replay will be created.
When chat replay may be missing
- The stream exceeds 12 hours: YouTube may not capture an archive, so do not count on replay.
- Replay is disabled: A creator can turn off Live chat replay in the video’s customization settings.
- The archive was edited in YouTube’s video editor: YouTube says edited streams do not have chat replay.
- The audience is set as Made for Kids: YouTube lists live chat and live chat replay among the disabled features.
Does chat replay reset when you restart a continuous stream?
YouTube’s official guidance does not explain what happens to chat history when a creator manually ends and restarts a continuous broadcast. It does not confirm that YouTube reliably splits the broadcast into replayable segments, nor that chat messages carry over between sessions. Treat each restart’s archive and replay behavior as undocumented rather than promising viewers a continuous transcript.

How to protect the recording—and what that does not save
- Keep the stream below 12 hours if the archive matters. This avoids relying on capture in the situation YouTube specifically warns may not be archived.
- Make a local recording as a backup. YouTube recommends recording a local archive. It can protect your video if an online archive is unavailable.
- Check replay settings and content restrictions. Confirm replay is enabled for the archive, and account for the Made for Kids and edited-video exceptions.
- Do not treat a local recording as a chat backup. YouTube’s guidance recommends it for the video archive; it does not say a local video file preserves YouTube chat replay.
