How to Prevent Clipping on a 24/7 YouTube Radio Stream

Prevent clipping by lowering gain at the first distorted stage, using OBS’s Limiter last as a peak safeguard, and checking a recording of loud passages and transitions.

To prevent clipping, find and lower the gain at the first point in your audio chain that distorts, then use OBS’s Limiter filter as the last filter for peak control. Test loud tracks and transitions, watch OBS’s peak meter, and record and listen to a representative run before leaving the stream unattended. A limiter can restrain later peaks; it cannot repair audio that was already clipped upstream.

What clipping is—and what a limiter can and cannot do

In digital audio, 0 dBFS is the full-scale ceiling. OBS explains that the signal ultimately recorded or streamed must stay below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping distortion (OBS Audio Mixer Guide; OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details, dated 2022-02-13). OBS can process signals above 0 dBFS internally using floating-point audio, but that does not make an over-level final output safe.

Clipping can begin before the signal reaches OBS: in a music file or player, a device output, a mixer or interface, operating-system or application volume, an OBS source filter, or the final mix. A limiter placed later cannot undo distortion created earlier. Find the first overloaded point and reduce gain there; use the limiter as a final safeguard against peaks that remain.

Find where the audio first becomes distorted

Play material that can expose the problem

Use the same player, routing, OBS scene, and source configuration as the live broadcast. Test loud and dense tracks, bass-heavy or transient-heavy passages, station IDs, alerts, crossfades, and source changes if your stream uses them. A quiet stretch alone is not a useful clipping test.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Listen and meter from source to stream

  1. Listen at the earliest available point, such as the player or device output. If it already sounds distorted, lower that source or device’s gain before adjusting OBS.
  2. Continue checking each stage in the route, including any mixer or audio interface and operating-system or application volume. Reduce the gain at the first stage where distortion appears, then listen again downstream.
  3. In OBS, play the loud passages and watch the relevant source meter and the final mix. OBS’s main moving meter bar shows peak level; its peak indicator holds the loudest reading for 20 seconds, helping reveal brief spikes. The black VU-style indicator is a short-window loudness-related reading, not the peak ceiling (OBS Audio Mixer Guide, dated 2026-04-03).
  4. When diagnosing raw input level, account for source filters: OBS says the input indicator is after source filters but before the volume fader. Temporarily disable source filters if you need to isolate the unprocessed input level (OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details).

OBS’s technical page identifies -20 dBFS as its Alignment Level and -9 dBFS as its Permitted Maximum Level. Those are OBS meter conventions, not mandatory targets for every music stream or a YouTube live loudness specification. OBS also notes that some PPM readings, including its own, may understate peaks by 3 dB; preserve that qualification rather than treating every peak reading as exact (OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details).

Set gain and add OBS’s limiter safely

Balance the signal before limiting

Reduce an overloaded source, device, interface, or application at the stage where the distortion begins. Then balance your sources and master mix so the output stays below the digital ceiling during the loudest passages. Do not chase one meter color or push every source to a fixed level; the right gain depends on the source and routing.

Put the Limiter last in the filter chain

OBS’s guidance is explicit: “When using a Limiter it should be the last filter in your chain.” (OBS Limiter Filter, dated 2022-01-12.) If a gain-raising filter follows the limiter, it can defeat the ceiling.

The documented OBS Limiter defaults are a threshold of -6.00 dB and a release of 60 ms. Treat these as software defaults, not universal settings or a required target for every genre. Start from the default only as a reference, then listen to the real mix and assess whether limiting is controlling peaks without making the audio sound worse.

Limiting is peak control, not integrated-loudness normalization. The cited OBS documentation does not establish a YouTube-specific integrated loudness target, so do not treat -14 LUFS—or another fixed integrated number—as a YouTube requirement for preventing clipping. AES guidance discusses a maximum of 1 dB of limiting before final encoding as a starting recommendation when frequent peaks cause audible distortion or decoder artifacts; it is general internet-audio distribution guidance, not a YouTube live rule (AES guidance).

Record and check a representative run before leaving it unattended

  1. Use OBS’s normal scene and playback route to make a recording.
  2. Listen through the beginning, the loudest material, transitions, and any source changes. Check for distortion as well as unexpectedly large changes in level.
  3. Confirm that no device or source distorts before OBS and that the final recorded mix remains clean.
  4. Repeat the test whenever a source file, player volume, mixer or interface route, scene, software filter, or encoding setup changes. Any of these can alter the signal reaching the stream.

OBS recommends recording a normal session and listening before going live (OBS Audio Mixer Guide). No single setting can substitute for checking the actual route and material you will broadcast.

Troubleshoot common clipping symptoms

  • The audio is distorted before OBS: Reduce gain at the player, device, mixer, interface, or other earliest stage where distortion is audible. A later OBS limiter will not restore clean audio.
  • The meter seems safe, but a loud passage clips: Test the loudest content and inspect OBS’s 20-second peak hold after the event. Do not judge from quiet passages or only from the black VU-style indicator.
  • The raw input seems too hot: Check whether source filters are changing the signal. OBS’s input indicator is after those filters; disable them temporarily to isolate the raw input level.
  • The limiter does not catch peaks: Check that the Limiter is last in the relevant filter chain and that a later filter is not raising the level after it.
  • The recording is clean but the stream sounds clipped: Recheck the final OBS mix and the full route used for the live output. The recorded test is valuable, but it only verifies the configuration and material actually tested.
  • Clipping returns after a change: Repeat the recording and listening check after changing source files, levels, routing, scenes, filters, or encoding.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your 24/7 YouTube radio stream uses uploaded recordings or a playlist, StreamNeo can keep it running without a home computer staying on: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the upload from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only. You still need to prepare clean source audio: cloud playback does not repair a file that was already clipped.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud.
  • Each slot has one flat price for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required; the offer is one free day per account.
  • Monthly: $9.99 per month.
