Use the hardware video encoder that your installed FFmpeg build and driver can actually run, then match YouTube’s ingest settings for your chosen codec, resolution and frame rate. For YouTube Live, target CBR, a two-second keyframe interval and a stable upload connection. Keep a separate local recording: YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Choose settings for your machine, not a universal command
There is no single FFmpeg hardware-encoding command that is safe to prescribe for every 24/7 stream. The available encoder, its options and its runtime behavior depend on your operating system, GPU or integrated graphics, driver and FFmpeg build. Your source file, desired output frame rate, audio and local archive plan matter too.
Hardware encoding means selecting a hardware-backed encoder for the output. The FFmpeg option -hwaccel concerns hardware decoding of the input; adding it alone does not select a hardware video encoder. FFmpeg’s documentation also cautions that acceleration availability depends on the installed hardware and suitable driver, and that moving frames between GPU and system memory can add overhead.
Check encoder and acceleration availability
- Record your OS, GPU or iGPU model and generation, installed driver, FFmpeg version, source resolution and frame rate, and target stream settings. Check that your upload connection can sustain the chosen video bitrate plus audio and network headroom.
- Run
ffmpeg -hide_banner -encodersand inspect the listed video encoders for the implementation you intend to use. Encoder names and availability vary by build. - Run
ffmpeg -hide_banner -hwaccelsto see which hardware-acceleration components the build enables. This is not a runtime test and does not prove your device and driver can initialize the encoder. - Test the intended encoder with your actual GPU and driver before scheduling a long broadcast. Confirm that it initializes, sustains the target frame rate and works while the local recording is being written.
Do not treat encoder families as interchangeable. FFmpeg’s QSV documentation describes its own presets, a low_power option with mode and version limitations, and a scenario hint that includes livestreaming. The AMF AV1 encoder exposes its own rate-control and latency choices. These are implementation-specific controls, not universal FFmpeg settings. The available evidence does not establish a quality, GPU-load or power winner among NVIDIA, Intel, AMD and software encoding.

Set YouTube’s ingest target
YouTube’s live guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest and H.264, HEVC or AV1 video, up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Choose the bitrate row for the actual codec, resolution and frame rate you will send. The figures below are YouTube Help recommendations for live ingest, not comparative encoder test results; the page’s publication year is not stated.

Video rate control and keyframes
- Rate control: Set constant bitrate (CBR) for the live video output and use the recommendation for the selected codec and mode. The actual option names and behavior for CBR depend on the encoder implementation.
- Keyframes: Use a two-second keyframe interval, as YouTube recommends, and do not exceed four seconds. If the encoder setting is expressed in frames, calculate the two-second interval from the output frame rate: 120 frames at 60 fps or 60 frames at 30 fps. Confirm how your chosen encoder interprets its keyframe option.
- Frame rate: Keep the output at or below 60 fps and match it to the intended stream mode. A source’s frame rate and the output frame rate are not necessarily the same; test the conversion rather than assuming the GPU will handle it without drops.
- Other advanced settings: YouTube lists square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame and CABAC among its advanced settings. These are targets to check against the selected encoder’s support, not proof that every hardware encoder exposes identical controls.
Audio and color
- For stereo, YouTube’s guidance specifies AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. For 5.1 audio, it specifies AAC at 384 Kbps and 48 kHz.
- For SDR, YouTube specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit. Its guidance recommends HEVC for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.
- Use YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance for the complete codec-specific requirements before configuring HDR, surround audio or less common output modes.
Build and test the FFmpeg output
Treat this as a configuration workflow, not a copy-and-run command: the encoder name, option names, input handling, output URL and archive method must match your installation. The angle-bracketed items below are placeholders, not literal FFmpeg values.

- Select the output encoder. Replace
<VIDEO_ENCODER>with the hardware encoder actually listed by your build and verified at runtime. Select a codec that encoder supports and YouTube currently accepts. Do not assume that the presence of a hardware-acceleration component implies that a matching video encoder is available. - Set the output mode. Configure the desired resolution and frame rate, CBR and the matching YouTube bitrate. Set a two-second keyframe interval using the units and syntax required by that encoder. Check the encoder’s own available options; presets, latency modes and rate-control labels differ.
- Configure audio and ingest. Select the appropriate AAC audio mode and sample rate, then send the stream to YouTube over RTMPS where available. Put the stream key in the destination configuration required by your setup. Treat it as a secret: do not publish it or include it in a screenshot, and regenerate it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Write a local archive at the same time. Configure a local output in addition to the live output, choosing a container and retention location appropriate to your workflow. Verify that the local file is growing and playable while the live stream runs. If the two outputs use different encodings, account for the extra encoder load; a second encoding path can change what the machine must sustain.
- Run a representative test. Use gameplay with the motion and audio characteristics expected in the real broadcast. Check FFmpeg’s logs for encoder initialization errors, dropped or duplicated frames, audio problems and output failures; check YouTube’s preview and stream health. Do not depend on a 24/7 run until both ingest and local recording have passed a sustained test.
For a VOD file intended to play continuously, configure looping and real-time pacing appropriate to that input rather than allowing FFmpeg to send it as fast as it can read it. The exact input and looping command depends on the source arrangement and FFmpeg build. A single production-ready command cannot be established without the machine, source, encoder, frame rate, audio, upload capacity and archive details.
Plan local preservation separately from YouTube’s archive
A continuous broadcast is longer than YouTube’s automatic-archive threshold. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” It also says, “We recommend recording a local archive as a backup.” These are YouTube Help statements; the page’s publication year is not stated.

Think of the live page as the distribution endpoint and the local recording as the preservation copy. Dividing the broadcast into shorter sessions is an operational option if you want separate platform archives, but it does not guarantee that every segment will be retained. Keep and verify the local recording regardless. YouTube also notes that rewind capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; DVR behavior is separate from whether a finished archive exists.
Estimate storage from the recording you actually write
Calculate storage from the local recording’s configured bitrate, recording duration and overhead—not automatically from the live ingest bitrate. The archive can have a different bitrate if you configure it separately. As a rough planning relationship, storage in bytes is bitrate in bits per second multiplied by recording seconds, divided by eight, then adjusted for container overhead and filesystem needs. Confirm the actual output size and retention period before relying on a particular disk capacity. YouTube does not specify a required drive type, capacity or RAID arrangement; an external drive is one possible archive destination, not a requirement.

Check the broadcast before leaving it unattended
- Encoder fails to initialize: Recheck that the selected encoder is present in this FFmpeg build and that the required hardware and driver runtime are available. A listed acceleration component alone does not confirm successful runtime initialization.
- Stream health is unstable: Verify the RTMP/RTMPS destination and stream key, compare the actual codec, resolution and frame rate with the chosen YouTube bitrate row, and check whether the connection has enough reliable upload capacity with headroom. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and FFmpeg logs during a representative test.
- Frames drop or the system struggles: Test the actual workload with live output and local recording enabled. Review whether the machine is sustaining encoding, input decoding, any frame transfers and disk writes. Hardware support does not guarantee that every part of this workflow is accelerated or cost-free.
- The YouTube archive is missing or rewind is limited: Do not rely on an over-12-hour stream being captured or fully rewindable. Use the verified local recording as the preservation copy.
- The local archive stops growing: Check FFmpeg’s output errors, available storage and destination access, then verify the saved file after the test. YouTube advises checking archive integrity and confirming that the local recording is growing.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health, preview and accessibility. For a continuous channel, include a check of the local file in that routine; an apparently healthy live preview does not establish that the archive is intact.
