OBS vs FFmpeg for a 24/7 YouTube Livestream of Children’s Stories

OBS suits creators who want graphical control over scenes and sources; FFmpeg suits command-driven, repeatable media pipelines. Neither removes the need to test, monitor, and plan recovery for a 24/7 YouTube stream.

Choose OBS Studio if you want to arrange story artwork, scenes, overlays, and audio in a graphical interface. Choose FFmpeg if your broadcast is a fixed video or sequence that you can configure and supervise with commands or scripts. Neither is established as the more reliable choice for 24/7 streaming: continuous operation depends on the computer, network, monitoring, and recovery plan as well as the encoder.

OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your story stream?

Consideration OBS Studio FFmpeg
How you work A graphical production application for capturing, compositing, encoding, recording, and streaming. OBS Studio project A command-line tool for media input, processing, and output. FFmpeg documentation
Best fit for this use Producing a show from several visual or audio sources, with a preview and hands-on scene control. Repeatedly sending a fixed file or media pipeline, especially when an operator can maintain scripts and commands.
What you must still handle Encoder load, power and internet interruptions, stream monitoring, and restart or failover procedures. Input and output configuration, machine resources, monitoring, and restart or failover procedures.

This is a workflow distinction, not a head-to-head reliability test. OBS cautions that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee a machine can stream at a particular resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity. FFmpeg’s resource needs likewise depend on its inputs, filters, codecs, and output settings. Test your own setup at the settings you intend to use; OBS suggests starting with its Auto-Configuration Wizard. OBS system requirements

Set the stream to YouTube’s requirements

Use the YouTube Live Control Room to create or select the stream, obtain the ingest details and stream key, and preview the incoming signal before going live. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube encoder settings

Output example YouTube-published H.264 video bitrate Keyframe interval Stereo audio
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds 128 Kbps; 44.1 kHz sample rate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds 128 Kbps; 44.1 kHz sample rate

These are YouTube Help figures published on the encoder-settings page and accessed in 2026; they are examples, not a universal 24/7 preset. Select a quality your upload connection can sustain reliably, accounting for other network use, and test representative narration, music, and motion. The appropriate bitrate varies with resolution, frame rate, and ingest codec. A bitrate setting is not a substitute for checking the stream-health status in YouTube.

Set up OBS for a looping story broadcast

  1. Prepare the program. For a simple unattended loop, put the stories, narration, artwork, and any transitions into a tested video file or a playlist workflow you know your OBS setup can play continuously. If using scenes and separate sources, preview the entire sequence—including transitions and audio levels—before relying on it overnight.
  2. Configure the video output. In OBS, open Settings > Video and select the canvas and output resolution and frame rate you intend to send. For a straightforward starting point, test 720p30 or 1080p30 rather than assuming the computer can sustain a higher setting.
  3. Configure streaming and encoding. Open Settings > Stream, select the YouTube connection option available in your OBS version, and enter the stream key from YouTube’s Live Control Room. In the output/streaming settings, choose an encoder and configure CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and an H.264 bitrate that matches your selected output and YouTube’s published guidance. The available encoder names and controls can vary by operating system, OBS version, and hardware.
  4. Check audio. Confirm that narration and any music reach the stream, are not clipped, and remain audible during quiet passages. YouTube’s cited stereo example is 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz; listen to the Live Control Room preview rather than trusting meters alone.
  5. Enable and verify the loop. If using a media source for a single file, enable its loop option. For a playlist or multi-scene show, verify that it advances and returns to the start as intended. A frozen source, unexpected blank interval, or one-time playback can leave the stream live but not meaningfully broadcasting.
  6. Run a full rehearsal. Start the encoder, inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, and listen through a representative section. Verify that the stream continues after the intended transitions and that the archive is being created if you need one.

Send a looping file with FFmpeg

FFmpeg is a better fit when the feed can be described as a repeatable command. The example below loops one prepared video file, reads it at normal playback speed, encodes H.264 and AAC, and sends it to an RTMPS destination. Replace the input filename and set RTMPS_URL to the complete RTMPS ingest address and stream key supplied for your YouTube broadcast. Do not publish the key or put it in a shared script.

RTMPS_URL='PASTE_THE_COMPLETE_RTMPS_INGEST_ADDRESS_AND_STREAM_KEY_HERE'
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i story.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60
  -b:v 14M -minrate 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv "$RTMPS_URL"

This example targets 1080p at 30 fps with a 2-second GOP (60 frames), 14 Mbps H.264 video, and the cited stereo audio example. It is not a universal command: confirm the source’s dimensions and frame rate, test whether the machine can encode it continuously, and adjust bitrate to the output resolution and connection. For a 720p30 H.264 example, YouTube lists 8 Mbps as recommended. The command loops one file; for several stories, prepare and test a suitable combined file or build a playlist pipeline deliberately rather than assuming this command will choose and sequence separate files.

If FFmpeg exits, the feed can stop even though the YouTube event exists. Run it in a supervised process environment that can report failures and restart it, and verify that a restart reconnects successfully. Restart behavior is an operational choice, not an automatic uptime guarantee from the encoder.

Plan for continuous operation, not just a successful start

YouTube recommends setting up an encoder event at least 2 hours before a scheduled event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes beforehand. Its checklist calls for checking the Live Control Room preview, testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting Ethernet, confirming local archive integrity and file growth, checking channel, watch-page, and mobile accessibility, and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. • During operation, watch for stream-health alerts and listen or review the feed often enough to catch stalled video, silence, or a broken transition.
  • Rehearse what happens after an encoder crash, internet loss, or power interruption. Decide who will notice and restart the stream, and whether a backup encoder, UPS, or network connection is worth the added cost and complexity.
  • If recording locally, check that the archive file grows and can be played back. Streaming successfully does not prove the local recording is intact.

A UPS, spare encoder, and redundant network are optional continuity choices, not requirements specified by YouTube. The cited sources provide no 24/7 uptime guarantee, maximum duration for this use, or controlled OBS-versus-FFmpeg failure-rate comparison.

Rules about minors appearing are not the same as rules about illustrated stories

YouTube says streams featuring minors under 16 who are not visibly accompanied by an adult may be removed or have live chat disabled. That guidance concerns minors appearing in a stream; it does not, by itself, establish that a prerecorded illustrated story with adult narration is subject to that specific rule. Protect personal information and moderate chat where chat is available.

Clear rights for every part of the broadcast

Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the story text, illustrations, music, narration or other recordings, and any archive or rebroadcast. YouTube lists an active copyright strike and a match to another copyrighted live broadcast among reasons that can lead to live-stream restrictions. A story’s age, a particular edition, translation, illustration, recording, or territory can affect the rights analysis; no blanket permission for a given work follows from the streaming software you choose.
