Choose an AWS Region before creating the channel; recording to S3 is optional.
What you need before creating an IVS channel
- An AWS account and the IAM permissions needed to use Amazon IVS. AWS recommends checking service quotas and planning how to prevent unwanted content and viewers.
- A broadcaster: the IVS console’s camera-and-microphone workflow, OBS Studio v30.2 or later, or a browser application using the IVS Web Broadcast SDK.
- A decision about the AWS Region. An IVS channel is a regional resource: create and manage it in the same Region. Broadcasters can contribute from anywhere and viewers can watch from anywhere.
Channel creation provides separate details for sending and viewing video: an ingest endpoint and stream key for the broadcaster, and a playback URL for viewers. The stream key authorizes someone to send video to your channel; it is not a viewing link.
Create the channel in the AWS console
- Open the Amazon IVS console and select the AWS Region where you want the channel. Keep that Region selected when you later manage the channel.
- Choose Create Channel. Accept the default configuration or enter a channel name. Names do not have to be unique, so use the channel ARN to identify the resource unambiguously.
- Decide whether to enable automatic recording. To record, create or select a recording configuration associated with an S3 bucket, then associate it with the channel. You can skip this: recording is not required for live playback.
- Create the channel. Save its ingest server, stream key, and playback URL. If your encoder will use SRT, expand the additional ingest options and note the required endpoint and passphrase.
Protect the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it can broadcast to the channel. Do not publish it in screenshots, public code, or logs.
Choose how to broadcast
Quick camera and microphone test in the console
The IVS console broadcast workflow prompts you to allow camera and microphone access, select the input devices, and start broadcasting. This is a straightforward way to test a channel with available devices. It uses live-video input and consumes resources, so AWS notes that this workflow incurs live-video input costs.

Stream from OBS Studio
- Install and open OBS Studio v30.2 or later.
- In OBS, choose Amazon IVS as the streaming service and enter the stream key from your channel. Use the channel’s ingest details for the connection; keep the key private.
- Set resolution and video bitrate within the limits for your IVS channel type. The applicable limits depend on the channel configuration; do not assume one setting fits every channel.
- Use a two-second keyframe interval, as recommended in the AWS guide.
- Start streaming in OBS, then verify playback using the channel’s playback URL.
OBS is free and open-source software. For ingest, IVS supports RTMPS, RTMP, and SRT. Prefer RTMPS unless you have a specific, verified reason to use RTMP. RTMPS uses TLS 1.2 or later. SRT is an option for compatible encoders; it uses port 9000 and requires the endpoint and passphrase. Treat the SRT passphrase as secret as well.
Broadcast from a browser application
For a browser-based product, use the Amazon IVS Web Broadcast SDK. Initialize its client with the channel’s ingest endpoint and a broadcast preset. Match that preset to the backend channel type: the client and channel configurations must be compatible.
Configure latency for the experience you need
The IVS API defines LOW latency for near-real-time interaction and NORMAL latency for broadcast and delivery up to Full HD; the API default is LOW. Choose based on whether viewers need to react to the broadcaster with minimal delay or are watching a less interactive broadcast. A service-level setting does not guarantee identical end-to-end performance for every viewer or network.

AWS describes low-latency delivery as capable of being under five seconds, not as a guarantee for every setup. For the lowest possible latency, AWS says to use the Amazon IVS Player; third-party HLS players are not supported for that lowest-latency mode.
Play back and verify the stream
- Start the broadcast from the console, OBS, or your browser application.
- Open the channel’s playback URL, or use the console’s Playback tab to confirm that video is arriving.
- Allow for startup delay. AWS says playback typically becomes viewable after a brief delay, usually under 30 seconds.
The playback URL is globally usable, and IVS delivers the stream through its delivery network. AWS advises against proxying the playback URL through a custom domain.

aws ivs create-channel --name test-channel
The response includes channel details and a stream key. Preserve the ingest endpoint, stream key, and playback URL, and keep the key secret. For recording, first create a recording configuration and S3 bucket, then reference that configuration when creating the channel. Because channel resources are regional, run the command for the intended Region and use that Region for subsequent management.
Optional recording to S3
Live viewing does not require a recording. If you want an archive, configure automatic recording with an S3 bucket and an IVS recording configuration, then associate that configuration with the channel. The console setup can do this during channel creation; the CLI workflow requires the recording configuration and bucket to be prepared first.

Security, limits, and cost considerations
- Keep credentials private: the stream key permits contribution to the channel. Protect SRT passphrases too.
- Use secure ingest: choose RTMPS by default; use RTMP only for a specific, verified need.
- Stay within channel limits: configure resolution and bitrate for the selected channel type. Exceeding allowed input can disconnect the stream.
- Check regional setup: create and manage the channel in its selected AWS Region.
- Plan for charges: live-video input incurs AWS costs, including for the console broadcast workflow. The AWS setup materials cited here do not state current dollar rates; check AWS pricing for your Region and configuration before streaming.
- Review quotas and safeguards: AWS recommends checking service quotas and taking steps to prevent unwanted content and viewers.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
The stream will not connect
Confirm that the encoder is using the channel’s ingest details and the correct stream key, and that it is configured for a supported protocol. If using SRT, check the endpoint and passphrase and allow the required port 9000 connection.

The stream disconnects after starting
Check that resolution and bitrate are within the selected channel type’s limits. An input that exceeds the allowed limits can disconnect the stream.
The browser SDK cannot broadcast
Check that the SDK preset matches the backend channel type and that the client was initialized with the channel’s ingest endpoint.
The playback page appears blank
Confirm the broadcaster has started sending video and that you opened the playback URL rather than the ingest endpoint or stream key. Allow the usual startup delay, then verify the channel and playback details in the console in the channel’s Region.

The channel is missing from the console
Switch to the AWS Region where it was created. IVS channels are regional resources and are managed in their creation Region.
