For a dependable first attempt, send H.264 over RTMPS with constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate your Pi and upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s H.264 guidance gives 5–14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3–8 Mbps for 720p30; those are platform recommendations, not evidence that a particular Raspberry Pi can encode the profile. For a playlist, use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer only when the files have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases, then test the full setup and watch YouTube’s stream-health status.

Choose a starting resolution and bitrate

YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance lists the following H.264 bitrate ranges. They describe YouTube’s ingest guidance, not Raspberry Pi performance guarantees. The page does not state a publication year.

Output YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance Practical starting consideration
720p30 3–8 Mbps A conservative first trial when upload capacity or encoding headroom is uncertain.
720p60 3–8 Mbps May suit motion-heavy video, but test sustained encoding and upload on the target Pi.
1080p30 5–14 Mbps A reasonable target when the board and measured connection can maintain it.
1080p60 6–17 Mbps Requires more sustained encoding and network capacity; validate before relying on it.

Pick the highest quality that both the board and a measured, stable upload connection can maintain. Leave headroom rather than matching the nominal upload rate exactly. If you are unsure, start at 720p30 or another lower-demand profile and test it under realistic conditions. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1, but this guide uses H.264 as the broadly compatible starting point; installed encoder support varies by Pi, operating system, and FFmpeg build. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance includes further format and advanced-setting details.

Set the encoder and audio parameters

  • Protocol: Prefer RTMPS when your FFmpeg build and ingest endpoint support it. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default, so retrieve the RTMPS URL specifically if using the encrypted protocol. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
  • Video codec: H.264 for the example workflow.
  • Rate control: CBR, as recommended by YouTube.
  • Keyframes: Two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 44.1 kHz stereo at 128 kbps. Confirm the chosen encoder and options exist in your FFmpeg build.

For H.264, an example command can use x264’s CBR-style parameters and set the GOP to approximately two seconds. The following is a template, not a verified command for every Pi or FFmpeg build. Replace the placeholders, check the available encoders and options locally, and adapt the video dimensions, frame rate, and bitrate to the profile you selected:

ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune zerolatency -b:v 5M -minrate 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 -f flv "RTMPS_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY"

This illustrates a 720p30-oriented bitrate starting point; it does not force the input to 1280×720. To output a fixed resolution, add an appropriate scale filter such as -vf scale=1280:720 and check the result and board load. The example uses libx264; if it is unavailable or cannot sustain the workload, do not assume a different encoder is an equivalent drop-in. Confirm the encoder, rate-control behavior, and supported options on the installed build.

The approximate GOP value is frame rate multiplied by two: for 30 fps, 60 frames; for 60 fps, 120 frames. If clips have varying frame rates or the output frame rate differs from the assumption, verify the actual keyframe timing rather than relying on the number alone. YouTube’s advanced guidance also discusses progressive scan, square pixels, CABAC, and Rec. 709 for SDR; configure only what your sources and output pipeline support.

Build a concat playlist that FFmpeg can read

The concat demuxer reads a text file and demuxes listed media files sequentially. It is not a universal joiner: FFmpeg’s documentation requires matching streams, codecs, and time bases for the files. Differences in stream layout or inaccurate duration metadata can produce timestamp artifacts, gaps, or playback problems. Consult the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation for the installed release; the master-branch documentation is rolling.

Create the playlist file

For files in one directory, a basic playlist.txt can look like this:

file 'clip-01.mp4'
file 'clip-02.mp4'
file 'clip-03.mp4'

Use paths and quoting that match your filenames. The command above uses -safe 0 to permit paths the concat demuxer would otherwise reject as unsafe; only use it with a playlist you control. Avoid malformed paths, unexpected absolute paths, and filenames with quoting characters unless correctly escaped.

Check compatibility and timing

  • Compare each file’s video and audio streams, codecs, and time bases; do not assume that matching extensions mean matching media.
  • Check for differences in resolution, frame rate, audio presence, and stream layout. If inputs do not match, normalize or encode them to a consistent format before treating them as one playlist.
  • FFmpeg advances timestamps using file durations. Incorrect duration metadata can cause artifacts or gaps; the concat format permits duration directives to override stored durations when needed.
  • Test transitions between every adjacent pair, including the last-to-first transition if you intend to loop. A sequential playlist does not by itself guarantee seamless looping.

For live output, the example uses -re to read input at its native rate rather than consuming it as fast as possible. It sends the listed files once. To repeat a playlist, use a loop mechanism appropriate to your workflow and test its behavior at the end-to-start boundary; loop options can interact with demuxing and timestamps, so do not assume an untested flag will create a clean continuous live stream.

Check which encoder your Raspberry Pi actually has

Pi model alone does not establish whether a particular profile is sustainable. The Raspberry Pi comparison cited here distinguishes Pi 5 software H.264 configurations using libx264 from a Pi 4 hardware-encoder configuration using h264_v4l2m2m. Those are examples, not universal performance guarantees or a compatibility matrix for every OS and FFmpeg release. The comparison’s surfaced publication indication was five months before October 3, 2026; numeric benchmark results suitable for quoting were not available here. See Raspberry Pi’s H.264 encoding performance article.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Check the encoders and options installed on your own system, for example with ffmpeg -encoders and the relevant encoder’s help output. Then test the intended resolution, frame rate, audio, playlist transitions, and stream duration on the target board. A short successful launch does not establish that the Pi can sustain the workload indefinitely.

Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live securely

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain this workflow.
  3. Use the matching RTMPS server URL if you selected RTMPS, rather than pairing an RTMPS setting with an ordinary RTMP endpoint.
  4. Insert the URL and key in the command or configuration as placeholders until you are ready to run it. Never publish or share a real key. Treat it like a password; if it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room.
  5. Start the FFmpeg process and confirm that YouTube receives the feed in Live Control Room before relying on it.

Do not paste a real key into a public post, screenshot, shared log, or support request. A shell command containing the key may also remain in shell history or appear in process listings, depending on how you launch it; use a private configuration or another secure method appropriate to your system.

Choose latency and DVR for the audience

For a playlist stream, choose latency based on how much real-time interaction matters. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering for viewers, while DVR lets viewers pause and resume a live stream. If the stream is primarily continuous background programming, uninterrupted playback may matter more than low delay; if viewers need timely interaction, test the latency choice with representative playback. Review YouTube’s live stream settings guidance for the available controls.

Test stream health before depending on the Pi

YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with audio and movement representative of the actual playlist, not just a static image or silent short clip. Monitor stream health in Live Control Room during the test and during the event; YouTube can report ingest problems that are not obvious from the FFmpeg process alone. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams for different playback formats, but that does not correct an unstable source feed.

  1. Run the full intended output profile and let the playlist reach multiple clip boundaries.
  2. Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages for dropped frames, connection issues, or other warnings.
  3. Watch the Pi’s system load and confirm the network remains stable for the duration you need.
  4. Check audio sync and levels, transitions, and the end-to-start loop behavior if repeating the playlist.
  5. Test recovery after a deliberate, controlled interruption before trusting unattended operation. Do not infer automatic recovery from a command that has only been tested once.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • YouTube does not detect the stream: Check that FFmpeg is running, the server URL matches the selected protocol, and the key is current and copied correctly. Retrieve the RTMPS URL explicitly when using RTMPS.
  • Stream-health warnings or dropped frames: Reduce output resolution or frame rate, then test again. Check that sustained upload capacity exceeds the video and audio bitrate with room for variation, and investigate competing network traffic.
  • FFmpeg reports a missing encoder or rejected option: The installed build may not include that encoder or support the option. Inspect its encoder list and per-encoder help; do not assume Pi 4 and Pi 5 installations expose the same paths.
  • CPU load is high or the stream falls behind: The selected software-encoding profile may exceed the board’s sustainable capacity. Try a lower-demand profile and retest, or verify whether a supported hardware encoder is available on that specific installation.
  • Playlist transitions glitch, go silent, or fail: Compare stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. Check duration metadata and test or normalize mismatched files; the concat demuxer does not make arbitrary clips compatible.
  • Timestamp errors or gaps appear: Inspect duration metadata and timestamps at the affected boundary. FFmpeg’s concat documentation describes duration directives for cases where stored durations are inaccurate.
  • The stream stops when YouTube disconnects: Check FFmpeg’s error output and restart behavior. A running local command should not be assumed to reconnect automatically; test the recovery method you plan to use.
