How to Set Up Ultra-Low-Latency Live Streaming with AWS Elemental Live

AWS Elemental Live’s documented low-latency DASH setup requires Chunked Encoding and Chunked Transfer, plus a receiver ready to accept the output. Here are the steps and the key distinctions from SRT and LL-HLS.

For AWS Elemental Live’s documented ultra-low-latency output workflow, create a DASH output group for an HTTP server or AWS Elemental MediaStore destination, enable Chunked Encoding, and then select the appropriate HTTP Push Dialect and enable Chunked Transfer. First confirm that the destination accepts chunked DASH. These encoder settings do not guarantee a particular glass-to-glass latency: the receiver, delivery chain, player, network, and their configuration all affect the result.

Before you configure the event

AWS documents this procedure for sending DASH to an HTTP server or AWS Elemental MediaStore. It depends on the receiving system being able to accept the chunked DASH output, so confirm that with the destination operator before changing the event. AWS says the feature works with downstream systems that can accept DASH and advises discussing requirements with the downstream administrator: AWS Elemental Live: Setting up for ultra-low latency.

  • Confirm the destination and that it supports the required chunked DASH behavior.
  • Ask the destination administrator about required fragment and segment lengths; AWS does not prescribe universal values on the cited setup page.
  • Keep the receiver and playback chain available for an end-to-end test after configuration.

Configure chunked DASH output in Elemental Live

  1. Create the event and DASH output group. Use the normal Elemental Live event workflow and add a DASH output group for the agreed HTTP server or MediaStore destination.
  2. Enable Chunked Encoding. This lets Elemental Live send fragments before the full segment is complete.
  3. Review Fragment Length and Segment Length. Set or adjust these according to downstream requirements. Do not assume a single value is right for every receiver; consult the interface help and destination administrator.
  4. Choose the HTTP Push Dialect. The Chunked Transfer field appears after selecting the appropriate dialect.
  5. Enable Chunked Transfer. Verify that the destination is configured to accept this transfer behavior.
  6. Run a deployment test. Play the output through the actual receiving system and player, then measure end-to-end latency in that deployment.

What the settings do—and do not—guarantee

Chunked Encoding allows fragments to be delivered before a complete segment is finished, and Chunked Transfer enables the corresponding transfer behavior for the selected HTTP Push Dialect. That can support earlier delivery when the receiving system handles the more frequent fragments. It does not, on its own, establish a glass-to-glass latency figure. The cited AWS setup guidance describes output configuration, not a guaranteed end-to-end performance number.

For a meaningful latency measurement, include the real encoder output, receiver or packager, network and delivery path, and player. A result measured in one deployment should not be treated as a guarantee for another.

Do not confuse chunked DASH with SRT or LL-HLS

SRT contribution and output

SRT is a transport workflow distinct from the DASH chunked-output procedure. For SRT input, coordinate the address and port, encryption and passphrase if used, any required stream ID, and preferred latency with the upstream administrator. The recovery-latency setting concerns coordination between endpoints; it is not a substitute for enabling chunked DASH output. See AWS’s SRT input setup and SRT input prerequisites.

For SRT output, coordinate destination address and port, caller/listener roles, latency, network access, and encryption with the downstream administrator. Elemental Live is the sender in either arrangement, while the caller initiates the handshake. If sending Reliable TS to an AWS Elemental MediaConnect flow, AWS recommends the MediaConnect option in Reliable TS rather than the SRT option, which is intended for downstream systems other than MediaConnect. Consult AWS’s SRT output guidance and output setup.

LL-HLS through MediaPackage and CloudFront

LL-HLS is a separate delivery architecture, documented by AWS for MediaPackage and CloudFront; it is not the Elemental Live chunked-DASH configuration above. For CloudFront manifest requests in LL-HLS workflows, forward the _HLS_msn and _HLS_part query strings so blocking playlist requests can work. See AWS’s live streaming with CloudFront and AWS Media Services and Guidance for Live Streaming on AWS.

The Chunked Transfer field is missing

Select the appropriate HTTP Push Dialect. AWS notes that the field appears after the dialect is selected.

The destination rejects the output or does not play it

Check with the destination operator that the receiving system accepts DASH chunked encoding and chunked transfer. Confirm the destination type and output configuration, then test with the actual receiver rather than assuming all DASH destinations handle fragments the same way.

Playback starts later than expected

Chunked output can only help if the downstream system handles the incoming fragments appropriately. Review receiver behavior, fragment and segment requirements, packaging and delivery, player compatibility, and network conditions with the operators of those components. Measure latency across the complete deployed path; the encoder settings alone provide no guaranteed end-to-end result.

SRT latency changes do not fix DASH delivery

SRT latency settings belong to the SRT transport connection and must be coordinated between its endpoints. For the documented DASH path, verify Chunked Encoding and Chunked Transfer instead.

When an always-on YouTube stream is a different need

Elemental Live’s chunked DASH procedure is for a compatible DASH destination; it is not a way to keep a YouTube channel continuously live from uploaded videos. If that is your goal, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for looping uploaded videos to YouTube, not an Elemental Live encoder or a low-latency DASH substitute. See StreamNeo.
