What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For a 720p, 30 fps YouTube Live stream, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps with H.264 and lists 3 Mbps as the minimum. With AV1 or H.265, it recommends 6 Mbps and lists 2 Mbps as the minimum. These are encoder settings—not upload speeds guaranteed by Indian 4G hotspots. Test the connection at the place and time you plan to stream, then run a realistic test stream before going live.
Which bitrate should you set for 720p?
Use the value for the codec your encoder sends to YouTube. The figures below are YouTube’s published encoder settings, accessed October 3, 2026; they are not measurements of Indian mobile networks. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance explains that recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate.
| Encoder codec | 720p30 minimum listed by YouTube | 720p30 recommended by YouTube |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
If you use H.264, start at 8 Mbps only when a representative test shows that your hotspot can sustain the upload reliably. The 3 Mbps minimum is YouTube’s listed minimum encoder setting; it does not mean a connection that measures 3 Mbps can carry an 8 Mbps stream. If delivery is unstable, lower the bitrate and, if needed, the output resolution or frame rate until stream health is steady.
Can an Indian 4G hotspot sustain 720p?
There is no single upload speed that can be guaranteed for every 4G hotspot across India. Performance depends on the connection at your particular location and time, so a speed-test result is useful evidence, not a promise of sustained performance during your broadcast. TRAI’s MySpeed provides a way to test a mobile or broadband connection; its result applies to the connection being tested.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Test where you will stream
- At the intended streaming location, connect the device or computer you will actually use to the hotspot. Avoid relying on a test from a different room, location, time, or network.
- Run an upload speed test, for example with TRAI MySpeed, and note whether results vary across repeated checks. Do not treat a brief peak as proof of stable capacity.
- Compare the observed upload performance with your encoder’s target bitrate, allowing room for variation rather than planning to use the connection’s entire measured capacity.
- Before the event, run a test stream with audio and movement similar to the actual program. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages, then adjust settings if needed.
YouTube specifically advises testing upload bitrate and testing before a live stream. Its bitrate guidance is an encoder recommendation, not a 4G service-level guarantee.
Recommended encoder settings for a 720p test
- Resolution and frame rate: Set 1280 × 720 and choose 30 or 60 fps based on the content and what your test can sustain. YouTube lists the same codec-specific bitrate figures for 720p30 and 720p60; that does not mean the two frame rates will look equally suitable for every subject.
- Bitrate: Choose the YouTube-listed recommendation for your codec only if a realistic test is stable. Reduce it if stream health indicates delivery trouble.
- Rate control: Use CBR (constant bitrate), as listed in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Protocol: Use RTMPS when supported. YouTube recommends it and says it encrypts data into and through Google’s servers.
- Resolution detection: YouTube recommends default resolution and frame-rate detection in Live Control Room. Manual resolution selection is available with a custom stream key.
Encoder menus differ, so the exact label and location of each setting depend on the software or hardware encoder. Confirm that the output values shown by your encoder match the settings you intend to test.

Choose 30 or 60 fps based on the stream
YouTube’s listed bitrate for 720p60 is the same as for 720p30 for each codec in the table above. That published value alone does not tell you which frame rate will look best on a 4G hotspot. For relatively low-motion material, 30 fps may be adequate; for fast movement, 60 fps can look smoother if your encoder and connection deliver it consistently. Compare the results in a test stream and prioritize stable delivery over a frame rate your connection cannot sustain.
Diagnose unstable delivery while testing or live
Watch stream health in YouTube Live Control Room and respond to its warnings rather than assuming the configured bitrate proves the video is reaching YouTube smoothly. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents videoIngestionStarved as a condition where YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming, which can cause viewer buffering. See the YouTube Live Streaming API stream documentation.

- Your settings do not match what YouTube detects: Check the encoder output and stream configuration. YouTube recommends default resolution and frame-rate detection; use manual resolution selection only with a custom stream key.
- You need to change the stream key: Use the key configured for the event in YouTube Live Control Room and in your encoder. Treat the key as private; anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel’s stream.
