First confirm you have permission to retransmit the station’s audio on YouTube, including any planned archive; a playable radio feed is not proof that you can rebroadcast it.
Before you set up the stream: confirm rights and YouTube access
Get written confirmation from the station and relevant music rightsholders that your permission covers a YouTube live simulcast, the territories where viewers may watch, monetization if applicable, and an archived recording if you plan to keep one. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may lead to a warning and placeholder, or the stream may be interrupted or terminated if the material remains. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance explains this enforcement.
If you have a license for third-party material, ask the rightsholder to add your YouTube channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube says a live stream may still be interrupted without allowlisting, even if you have a license or restrict the stream to territories where you hold the relevant rights. Permission to broadcast live does not necessarily cover saving or replaying the program.
You also need live-streaming access on your YouTube channel. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. Start the process before the time you intend to broadcast.

What you need
- OBS Studio: YouTube lists OBS as free, open-source streaming software and supports software encoders as well as standalone hardware encoders. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- A radio audio source: This might be the output of a player or application, an audio device, or another signal already available to your computer. The right routing method depends on how you receive the station.
- A visualizer source: An OBS plugin or source that can listen to the audio source carrying the program.
- A visual base: For example, a station image or other background for the scene.
- A reliable computer and internet connection: The computer running OBS must stay on and connected for the local setup to continue broadcasting.
You do not need a dedicated visualizer device, standalone encoder, or external audio interface for the basic software workflow. Those may be useful for a particular production setup, but the appropriate choice depends on the existing signal chain and reliability needs.
Set up radio audio and a visualizer in OBS
1. Identify how the radio reaches OBS
Before building the scene, identify the actual source carrying the program. It could be an application’s audio output, an input device, or another signal path. There is no single audio-routing instruction that fits every radio feed, operating system, and player.
In OBS, add or select the audio source that receives the radio program. Watch the OBS audio mixer while the station is playing. The correct source should show activity when the program is audible. If the meters do not move, the signal has not reached OBS; check the selected device, application output, and system audio routing before configuring the visualizer.

2. Build the scene
Create an OBS scene and add a visual base, such as a station image. Add the visualizer source to the scene, then select the OBS audio source carrying the radio program in the visualizer’s settings. The visualizer is part of the video scene; it does not encode or transmit the stream by itself.

Check the visualizer while the radio plays. Its movement should correspond to the same program shown on the audio meter. A moving graphic alone does not confirm that viewers will hear audio, so verify both the mixer and the intended mix.
3. Choose a visualizer compatible with your OBS version
The OBS Project Forums resource page lists Waveform 1.9.1, last updated July 14, 2026. The resource lists OBS Studio 27.0.0 as its minimum and Windows, macOS, and Linux support. Its visual styles include spectrum curves, bars, stepped bars, circular variants, peak and RMS meters, and waveform displays. Check the resource page against your installed OBS version before installing.

A separate Live Audio Visualizer repository documents normal, mirrored, and radial bars and requires OBS Studio 31.1.1 or later. These are version requirements from the respective project pages; check current compatibility before use.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a stream. Use the Live Control Room workflow in YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not share it or show it on stream.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS’s stream settings, choose the YouTube service and enter the server URL and stream key from YouTube. Check that you are using the details for the intended broadcast.
- Start the OBS stream and check YouTube’s preview. Confirm the preview shows the scene and the audio is present. In a scheduled workflow, wait for the preview and select Go live in YouTube when ready.
- End the broadcast from the streaming workflow when finished. Follow the current YouTube and OBS controls for stopping the stream; verify in YouTube Studio that the broadcast has ended.
The exact labels and layout may change. Follow the current prompts in YouTube Studio if they differ from the guide.
Test the complete signal before announcing the broadcast
Run a short test before your first stream. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing for a few minutes rather than jumping straight into a first stream or recording.

- Play the radio program and confirm the intended OBS audio meter moves.
- Confirm the visualizer is listening to that source and responds to it.
- Check the scene and YouTube preview, and confirm that the program can be heard in the preview.
- Make sure the visual and audio are the content you intend to broadcast, and that no unintended desktop or application audio is included.
- Confirm you have permission for the live use and, if applicable, the archive.
Decide whether to save the live stream
If you choose to archive the broadcast, treat the recording as a separate rights question. YouTube says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the stream is complete. Confirm that your permission covers recording and playback as well as the live simulcast. See YouTube’s guidance on archived live streams.

Changing the encoder or audio hardware does not change the copyright requirements. YouTube’s live-content checks and the need for appropriate permissions apply regardless of the signal path.
Troubleshooting common problems
The OBS audio meter is not moving
OBS is not receiving the radio program on the selected source. Check which device or application is carrying the audio, confirm that the program is playing, and select the corresponding source in OBS. If the source is an application or system output, check its routing to the device OBS is capturing.

The audio meter moves, but the visualizer stays still
The visualizer may be listening to a different OBS source. Open its settings and select the same source whose meter responds to the radio. Check that the plugin is compatible with your installed OBS version.
The visualizer moves, but viewers cannot hear the program
A visualizer responding to a signal does not prove that the stream’s audio mix contains it. Check the OBS mixer and YouTube preview, and verify the intended source is included in the stream audio.
YouTube does not show a preview
Check that OBS is using the server URL and stream key for the correct YouTube broadcast, then confirm OBS is sending the stream. Allow for first-time live-stream enablement, which YouTube says may take up to 24 hours.
The stream is warned, interrupted, or replaced by a placeholder
YouTube may have detected third-party content. Stop or change the broadcast as needed, then resolve the rights issue with the station or relevant rightsholder. If your use is licensed, ask the owner about adding your channel to the Content ID allowlist; having a license does not by itself guarantee uninterrupted live transmission.
