Normalize and check each finished podcast episode before you send it to YouTube: fix uneven dialogue first, measure the episode’s integrated loudness, apply a consistent target in your editor or audio tool, control peaks only if needed, then listen to the rendered file and test the stream. YouTube’s cited guidance specifies audio encoding settings, but not a podcast LUFS target or a required normalization method.
What normalization does—and what it does not do
Loudness normalization adjusts a program’s overall perceived level toward a chosen target. It is separate from encoding: codec, sample rate, and bitrate describe how audio is represented and transmitted, not how loud it sounds.
A single gain adjustment will not fix a podcast where one speaker or section is much louder than another. Correct those differences in your editor first; then normalize the finished mix. YouTube advises editing audio and video tracks in editing software before uploading when addressing upload audio or video issues (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot audio or video issues with uploads).
How to normalize a podcast episode
- Start with the finished mix. Balance speakers and sections in your audio or video editor. Resolve obvious level jumps before applying whole-program normalization.
- Measure integrated loudness. Use a loudness meter or a normalization feature in your editor. Pick a consistent target for your own series and distribution workflow, and apply it consistently. YouTube’s cited upload and live-stream guidance does not prescribe a podcast LUFS target, including −14 LUFS or −16 LUFS.
- Control peaks if necessary. If raising the overall level causes peaks to clip, use a limiter conservatively and listen for distortion or pumping. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a required true-peak ceiling.
- Export for the delivery path. Choose settings suited to whether you are uploading a video or feeding audio to a live encoder; the relevant YouTube recommendations are listed below.
- Listen to the rendered result. Check the opening, a loud passage, a quiet passage, and any transition into the next episode. Listen for clipping, pumping, sudden level changes, and silence or gaps at joins.
- Test the stream before relying on it. Use representative audio and video movement, then monitor audio quality and stream health. YouTube says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; YouTube live streaming tips.)
What audio settings should I use?
Use the recommendations for the actual delivery path. These are encoding settings, not loudness targets.

| Delivery path | YouTube audio recommendations | What they mean |
|---|---|---|
| Uploaded video | AAC-LC; 44.1 or 48 kHz; 128–256 kbps | Upload troubleshooting guidance lists these audio settings; it does not specify a podcast loudness target. (YouTube Help) |
| Live stereo encoder input | AAC or MP3; 44.1 kHz; 128 kbps | YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists these recommendations for stereo audio. They do not normalize volume. (YouTube Help) |
Do not change bitrate or sample rate expecting the volume to become more consistent. Loudness processing happens in your production workflow; these settings govern the encoded audio.
Does YouTube normalize podcast volume for a live stream?
The cited YouTube documentation covers codecs, sample rates, bitrates, testing, and stream monitoring. It does not establish a podcast-specific LUFS target, normalization algorithm, or true-peak ceiling. Prepare the episode’s level before sending it to YouTube rather than relying on a platform loudness setting documented in these sources.

When hardware or extra tools are optional
You do not need a dedicated recorder to normalize an existing episode; audio software can handle the workflow. Zoom’s PodTrak P8 documentation says the recorder can analyze a file’s loudness and automatically optimize it for podcasting, but that is a convenience, not a requirement (Zoom PodTrak P8 documentation). Headphones can help with listening checks, but YouTube does not mandate a headphone model or require headphones.
