To stream one prerecorded podcast file as a YouTube Live event, add it to an OBS scene as a Media Source. For a sequence of files, use OBS’s VLC Video source and create a playlist. Connect OBS to the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, check YouTube’s incoming preview, then start the event when the preview is ready.
Before you start
- Install OBS Studio and have the podcast file or files stored locally.
- Make sure live streaming is available on your YouTube channel. YouTube says channels need verification, must have no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check your current account status in YouTube Studio; availability can depend on the account.
- Confirm you have the rights needed for every part of the archive, including music, guest contributions, clips, and other third-party material. YouTube’s live terms make the content provider responsible for necessary rights in live and archived content. This is practical platform guidance, not legal advice.
- Plan for an internet connection with enough upload capacity for the file’s chosen stream quality, plus disk space if you will also record locally.
See YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance and livestream terms and conditions.
Choose the right OBS source
One file: Media Source
Use Sources → + → Media Source and select the local podcast recording. OBS lists common supported formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. The right choice depends on whether your archive is audio-only or includes video.
In the Media Source properties, set playback behavior for the event:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Loop: enable this if the file should repeat continuously. For a single pass, leave it off.
- Restart playback when source becomes active: use this when the file should begin from the start whenever the source is activated.
- Show nothing when playback ends: choose this if the scene should not freeze on the final frame after a non-looping file ends.
- Close file when inactive: consider this if the source does not need to stay open while hidden or inactive.
OBS documents these source options in its Media Sources guide.
Several files: VLC Video
For an archive made of multiple episodes or segments, add VLC Video and populate its playlist. Set the order deliberately, then choose whether it should loop or shuffle and how it should behave when hidden. VLC must be installed for this source to appear; OBS says a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video is unavailable, check the VLC installation and architecture before rebuilding the scene.

Use the playlist option only when you need multiple files; a Media Source is simpler for a single recording. See the OBS Media Sources guide for VLC Video options.
Build and check the scene
- Add the archive source. In the OBS main window, use Sources → +, then choose Media Source for one file or VLC Video for a playlist.
- Add optional visuals. You can add static episode art or a title if it serves the broadcast. OBS layers sources: items higher in the Sources list appear over items below them. Arrange and resize them in the preview as needed.
- Test playback from the intended point. Confirm the correct file or playlist order, whether playback starts at the beginning, and what appears when a file ends. Do not assume the last frame is a suitable holding screen.
- Check audio meters. Start playback and watch the OBS audio mixer. Confirm the podcast is reaching the intended audio channel and that the meters respond; listen to a short test if possible.
- Run a short test before the event. OBS recommends a test stream and checking audio meters in its Quick Start Guide.
OBS’s Sources Guide explains source layering.
Create the YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder stream, then set its title, visibility, and schedule. Follow YouTube’s encoder stream setup instructions.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. In YouTube Studio’s stream settings, retrieve the connection details. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in the stream settings. YouTube explains stream configuration in Manage live stream settings.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. Open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key; if configuring a custom connection, use the stream URL and key provided by YouTube. YouTube currently recommends RTMPS for encoder delivery.
- Choose quality based on the source and connection. Do not pick a universal bitrate or resolution without checking the archive’s properties and your upload capacity. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the chosen format and quality.
- Start the OBS feed, then inspect YouTube’s preview. Click Start Streaming in OBS and wait for the incoming signal to appear in Live Control Room. Check the audio and video preview and stream health. Use YouTube’s Go live control where the selected stream setup requires it; starting the encoder feed and starting the public event are not always the same action.
YouTube recommends testing before a stream, choosing quality suited to the connection, previewing the signal, and checking stream health. Its streaming tips cover those checks.

Monitor playback and keep a backup
- Watch the YouTube preview and stream health during the event, and check that the OBS audio meters continue to move when the podcast should be audible.
- If you are recording locally as well, confirm the recording has started and that its file size is growing. Make sure the recording destination has enough free space for the expected duration.
- YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. If retaining the complete event matters, do not rely solely on the platform archive.
- Stop the event using the Live Control Room flow and stop the OBS stream. Keep the local recording if you need a dependable copy.
See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance for its archive behavior.

VLC Video is missing from the source menu
Install VLC, then confirm its architecture matches OBS. OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS after installation if the source is still unavailable.
The playlist stops after one item or behaves unexpectedly
Review playlist order and the VLC Video loop or shuffle options. Confirm the intended visibility behavior as well; a source that becomes inactive can behave differently depending on its settings.

YouTube does not show an incoming preview
Verify that OBS is streaming, the YouTube stream URL and key match the selected Live Control Room stream, and the stream has not been stopped or reset. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update OBS with the new one.
The video arrives but the podcast audio does not
Check whether the source is audio-only or video-with-audio, then watch the OBS mixer while it plays. Confirm the intended audio source is active and the meters respond before going live.
The archive may not be saved after the event
For a stream longer than 12 hours, YouTube says it may not be captured at all. Record a local backup and verify that it is progressing during the broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with prerecorded material without leaving a PC running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
