To restart a recorded lesson playlist from its first video after the last one finishes, add the videos to OBS’s VLC Video Source and enable Loop Playlist. Keep Shuffle Playlist off if the lessons must play in order. VLC must be installed for this source to be available.
Set up a playlist that restarts at the beginning
- Install VLC if needed. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video Source. Match the installation to OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add a VLC Video Source. In OBS Studio, go to the Sources dock, click +, and choose VLC Video Source.
- Add the lesson videos. Open the source’s properties and add the media files to its playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Enable the playlist loop. In the source properties, turn on Loop Playlist. OBS describes this setting as controlling whether the source restarts after it runs out of media files; the playlist therefore starts again at its first item after the last video.
- Preserve lesson order. Leave Shuffle Playlist off. OBS documents it as a separate setting and lists it as off by default.
OBS’s official documentation lists VLC Video Source for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with VLC required on each platform. The documented settings are on the OBS Project’s Media Sources page; the Sources Guide explains adding sources. Both pages are dated January 11, 2022, so labels may vary in later OBS releases.
Choose the source that matches what you want to repeat

For a sequence of lessons, use VLC Video Source. The Media Source’s Loop setting repeats one file; it does not make a multi-video lesson sequence restart as a playlist.
Check playback if the playlist does not behave as expected
- VLC Video Source is missing: install VLC, making sure its architecture matches OBS. Restart OBS after installation if the source still does not appear.
- Only one lesson repeats: check that you added the videos to a VLC Video Source playlist, rather than adding a single file as a Media Source.
- The playlist stops after the last video: open the VLC Video Source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
- Lessons play in an unexpected order: confirm the playlist order and turn off Shuffle Playlist.
Optional alternative for more playlist editing
The third-party Media Playlist Source by CodeYan is an alternative if you need features such as editing a playlist without restarting the video. The OBS Forums resource page lists version 0.1.3, Windows/macOS/Linux support, and a minimum OBS Studio version of 31 for plugin versions beginning at 0.1.0. Plugin compatibility can change, so check its current page against your OBS version before installing it. For simply restarting a playlist after its final video, the built-in VLC Video Source setting is sufficient.
