The practical setup is to produce podcast audio and video, send that combined feed from an encoder to YouTube, and use the NAS as the encoder host only after verifying compatibility. If that is uncertain, encode on a computer and use the NAS for media storage instead.
How the setup works
YouTube Live receives a stream from an encoder. The encoder combines your podcast audio with video, then sends it to YouTube using the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. An audio podcast still needs a video signal: for example, a title card, waveform, or camera scene.
The audio source might be microphones and a mixer or interface connected to a production computer. That host can encode and send the stream directly, or—if your Synology model and software support the full workload—the encoder can run on the NAS. The NAS is not automatically an encoder just because it stores media or runs containers.
Check YouTube Live eligibility first
- Verify that the YouTube channel is eligible to go live and has no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days.
- Enable live streaming in advance if this is the channel’s first broadcast. YouTube says initial enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Retrieve the current server URL and stream key there; do not rely on an old saved endpoint.
See YouTube’s live streaming tips and instructions for creating a stream with an encoder for current channel and event requirements.

Choose where to encode
Encode on the Synology NAS
This is a possibility, not a model-independent promise. Check the exact NAS model and DSM version, whether Container Manager is available, the container image’s supported processor architecture, and whether the encoder can sustain your chosen audio and video output. You must also establish that the production audio source can reach the encoder. Generic container instructions do not certify a particular third-party encoder or its performance on your NAS. Synology advises checking with image providers for image-specific features and performance in its Container Manager image documentation.
Encode on a computer
If NAS compatibility or capacity is unknown, a desktop encoder is the simpler fallback. A computer with the podcast’s microphone or mixer interface connected can produce the audio-plus-video feed and send it to YouTube. It must remain powered on and connected throughout the broadcast. YouTube documents both software and hardware encoder approaches in its encoder setup guidance.

| Consideration | Encoder on Synology NAS | Encoder on computer |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility | Depends on model, DSM/package availability, container architecture, and encoder requirements; unresolved until checked for your device. | Depends on the computer and selected encoder. |
| Audio input | Confirm the host or container can access the microphone, mixer, or interface. | Often a direct connection for USB or interface audio; verify it with the chosen encoder. |
| During the broadcast | A NAS may already be online, but that does not establish encoding capacity or stability. | The computer must stay powered on and connected. |
| YouTube output settings | Configure the stream URL/key, protocol, codec, bitrate, and audio output in the encoder. | Configure the same YouTube requirements in the encoder. |
Build a video feed for an audio podcast
Decide what viewers will see before configuring the encoder. A static title card can identify the show and episode; a waveform or camera view can make the program more dynamic. The production host needs to combine that visual with the podcast audio. The available Synology documentation does not establish a Synology-specific recipe for turning an audio file into a still-image video stream.
Connect the microphones and mixer or interface to the actual production host, then confirm the encoder receives clean audio and a valid video source. Do not assume a container on the NAS can access a USB audio device merely because Container Manager is installed.

Connect the encoder to YouTube
- Create or schedule the event: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream.
- Copy the current ingest details: Get the server URL and stream key from the event or live settings, then enter them in the encoder. Treat the key like a password. YouTube documents how to manage live stream settings, including resetting a key if it is exposed.
- Prefer RTMPS when supported: Use the RTMPS endpoint supplied by Live Control Room rather than assuming an encoder’s default RTMP address is secure. RTMPS is RTMP protected by TLS/SSL; see YouTube’s RTMPS explanation.
- Set output and rehearse: Apply the settings below, run a test with representative speech and visuals, and check YouTube’s preview and stream health before the public event.
Set bitrate, keyframes, and audio
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video encoding, plus AAC or MP3 audio. Use constant bitrate encoding. Its recommendations include a two-second keyframe interval and say not to exceed four seconds; recommended stereo audio bitrate is 128 Kbps. These are YouTube platform recommendations, not proof that a particular Synology NAS can encode those formats.
| Output detail | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264, H.265, or AV1 |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 |
| Bitrate mode | Constant bitrate (CBR) |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Stereo audio bitrate | 128 Kbps recommended |
| 720p at 30 fps video bitrate | 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps maximum in YouTube’s table |
The 720p figure is for that resolution and frame rate; it is not a universal bitrate target. Choose a stable output that fits the upload connection and confirm the current Live Control Room guidance for your selected format. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution recommendations.

Check bandwidth and rehearse
- Measure outbound upload capacity rather than inferring it from download speed.
- Keep total stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom.
- Test with the actual program’s audio and video, then inspect the YouTube preview and stream health.
- Listen and watch as a viewer would: check speech levels, visual output, sync, and whether the stream remains stable.
YouTube advises setting up an encoder at least two hours before a stream and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. These are preparation recommendations, not a guarantee of connection performance. Its streaming tips also recommend testing before going live.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Start, monitor, and end the broadcast
- Start the encoder early enough for YouTube to receive the feed and display a preview.
- Confirm the image, sound, and stream health in Live Control Room. For a scheduled workflow that requires it, start the event there after the preview is ready.
- Monitor the encoder and YouTube status during the show. If YouTube drops the ingest, check the encoder connection and event status before resuming.
- End the event in YouTube and stop the encoder after the broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
Keep the stream key and content safe
A stream key lets the encoder send a feed to your channel. Do not show it in screenshots, publish it in a public Compose file, or share it with people who should not control the stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room using YouTube’s live stream settings.

Use audio, artwork, clips, and other material you have rights to broadcast. A live format does not exempt a podcast from YouTube’s copyright rules. For a scheduled show, also verify the title, visibility, audience settings, and any other event details in Live Control Room before sending viewers to it.
Common problems and fixes
- YouTube receives no feed: Check that the encoder is running, the event is open, and the server URL and stream key match the current Live Control Room details. Reset an exposed key.
- The NAS cannot run the encoder: Recheck the NAS model, DSM version, Container Manager availability, image architecture, and encoder requirements. Use a computer encoder if compatibility or capacity remains uncertain.
- The encoder runs but has no podcast audio: Confirm the microphone or interface is connected to the production host and accessible to the encoder. Do not assume NAS container access to an audio device.
- Viewers hear audio but see no useful picture: Provide a video source such as a title card, waveform, or camera scene; an audio-only program still needs video for this setup.
- Stream health is unstable: Check outbound bandwidth and lower the total bitrate if it approaches available upload capacity. Preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom and rehearse again.
- Settings warnings appear: Verify codec, constant bitrate mode, keyframe interval, audio bitrate, and resolution/frame-rate bitrate against YouTube’s current guidance and the selected event settings.
