For a Linux desktop where you want to manage scenes, audio sources and visuals, start with OBS Studio. For a fixed playlist on a headless Ubuntu host, FFmpeg supervised as a system service is a leaner do-it-yourself option if you can maintain a command-line pipeline. Neither choice alone guarantees a reliable 24/7 stream: the computer, network, encoder settings, monitoring and music rights all matter.
If you would rather not keep a Linux machine running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload cleared recordings, add your YouTube stream key and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
Which Linux streaming software fits your kirtan channel?
| Option | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | A channel that needs uploaded recordings looped on YouTube without an always-on home computer | Cloud-based playback of uploaded videos, playlists and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Upload the recordings, add the YouTube stream key and go live. |
| OBS Studio | Linux desktop production with scenes, live switching, audio inputs, still images or video backgrounds | Linux/Unix support is documented by the OBS Project. Compatibility does not establish 24/7 stability on a particular computer. |
| FFmpeg with service supervision | A fixed playlist and simple visual on a headless Ubuntu host | A community guide documents looping local audio/video with FFmpeg and running it as a systemd service. It is an example approach, not independent proof of reliability or security. |
Choose OBS if you need an operator-facing production workspace. Choose FFmpeg if the program is fixed and you are comfortable maintaining a command and its service. That distinction follows from their documented workflows; it is not a head-to-head endurance test.
Set up the YouTube stream connection
- Check channel readiness. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to enable, so confirm access before the intended launch.
- Copy the stream URL and key from your own Live Control Room. Enter them in the encoder’s streaming settings. Keep the key confidential: someone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guide.
- Prefer RTMPS when available. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. Use the endpoint shown in your Live Control Room rather than copying one from another channel or an example. OBS’s maintained service configuration includes a YouTube RTMPS preset with primary and backup endpoints, but your own Live Control Room is the authority for your stream URL. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and the OBS service configuration.
- Use HLS only if you need a specific capability. YouTube supports HLS ingestion, including for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP, but HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments. It also requires specific segment duration, TS segment format, rolling playlist behavior and HTTPS POST/PUT. OBS is listed among encoders that support HLS output. For a straightforward audio-led kirtan stream, RTMPS is the simpler default. See YouTube’s HLS ingest documentation.
Choose sustainable video and audio settings
Use settings suited to your actual connection and program rather than selecting the largest available numbers. YouTube recommends checking upload speed, testing representative audio and movement, and monitoring stream health. Its current ingest recommendations below are guidance, not a promise of playback quality.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Setting | YouTube recommendation or example | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Rate control (RTMP/RTMPS) | Constant bitrate (CBR) | Use CBR for a steadier ingest bitrate. |
| Keyframe interval (RTMP/RTMPS) | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds | Set the encoder to 2 seconds unless a specific requirement calls for otherwise. |
| Stereo audio | 44.1 kHz, 128 Kbps recommended | YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio as supported recommendations. |
| H.264 video at 1080p, 30 fps | 5 Mbps recommended | Use only if your sustained upload capacity can support the video and audio together. |
| H.264 video at 720p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps recommended | A lower-resolution option for a simpler visual or tighter bandwidth budget. |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC at 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps recommended | Apply only when your encoder and ingest setup support the codec. |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC at 720p, 30 fps | 6 Mbps recommended | Apply only when your encoder and ingest setup support the codec. |
For a static-image broadcast, higher resolution may add little for viewers. Test the actual audio, visuals and movement you plan to stream. OBS also cautions that meeting its baseline requirements does not guarantee that a particular computer can stream a chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder and scene complexity. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and the OBS system requirements.
Run a 24/7 stream without losing track of it
With OBS on a Linux desktop
- Build and test the scenes, audio sources and media sources before the stream is public.
- Keep the machine on, connected to the network and able to run the selected encoder and scene load. Linux support is not a guarantee of a particular machine’s sustained performance.
- Use a stable wired connection where practical. Test the representative program and observe YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming a successful start means the stream will remain healthy.
- Decide how the stream will be restarted after a computer, OBS or network interruption, and who will notice if it stops.
With FFmpeg on a headless Ubuntu host
- Use a community example as a starting pattern for looping local audio/video and running FFmpeg under systemd, not as a universal production recipe: Ubuntu VPS FFmpeg example.
- Adapt and validate the command for your own media, audio, video and YouTube ingest settings. Confirm that the files are accessible to the service account and that the host can sustain the required upload.
- Configure service supervision and a documented restart process, then test how it behaves after an FFmpeg exit and a network interruption.
- Monitor both the host/service and YouTube stream health. The right placement, storage, network and restart design depends on the host; the example does not establish a universal uptime guarantee.
Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A single continuous 24/7 broadcast exceeds that condition, so do not assume it will become one automatically archived video. Plan recurring sessions and how you will handle restarts and archives in the Live Control Room workflow.

Confirm music rights before going live
Traditional source material does not automatically make every recording or arrangement free to use. A recording, composition, arrangement or performance may have rights holders. YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the streamer to hold the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of the live content, including music licensing rights. Its copyright guidance says live streams are scanned for third-party content; a match may lead to a warning, interruption or termination. For licensed third-party content, YouTube says the channel may need to be added to the rights owner’s allowlist or the stream can still be interrupted.
- Check rights for each recording and composition, including the territories covered.
- Confirm that the license permits continuous live streaming and the intended use of the performance or recording.
- If the rights owner uses Content ID, ask whether the channel needs allowlisting before the broadcast.
Read YouTube’s live-stream terms and YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams before scheduling a continuous program.
