Start with OBS, Intel Quick Sync H.264, 1280×720 at 30 fps, CBR, an 8,000 Kbps video bitrate, and a 2-second keyframe interval. That is a sensible first profile for an older PC—not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. Confirm Quick Sync is available in OBS, test the actual video and audio for an extended period, and adjust based on whether the problem is encoder load or the internet connection.
Recommended OBS starting settings
For a first test on an older PC, use the following profile for YouTube Live. The 720p30 choice is a cautious starting point, not an official requirement for older computers. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance lists the bitrate values below as ingestion recommendations, not as a promise of stable performance.

Use progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709 for SDR, two B-frames, and one reference frame where the selected encoder exposes those options. OBS may not present every option on an older system, so do not assume a setting exists if it is absent from your version.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, for sending a live stream. In OBS, use the YouTube service/account connection or the stream configuration YouTube provides, and do not share your stream key: anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.

Check whether Quick Sync is available
Intel branding on the processor alone does not prove that OBS can use Quick Sync. OBS Project documents QSV support on Windows and Linux with Intel HD Graphics on Core i-series 2xxx (Sandy Bridge) or newer, and recommends Core i-series 4xxx (Haswell) or newer because early Quick Sync generations had lower image quality. This is general compatibility guidance, not a test of your particular machine.
- Open OBS and locate its output or streaming encoder selection. The exact menu path and labels can differ by OBS version.
- Look for an Intel Quick Sync H.264 encoder option. If it is missing, Intel’s guidance is that QSV is not available to that hardware configuration in OBS.
- Check that the PC has supported Intel graphics enabled and that the operating system and graphics drivers expose it to OBS. A supported CPU model by itself is not enough to confirm availability.
- If QSV is unavailable, do not select a different encoder blindly and assume the same settings will perform the same way. Test another encoder at a lower workload and monitor the resulting stream.
Hardware encoding typically reduces CPU workload, while older hardware encoders may deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate than x264’s default veryfast preset. The appropriate trade-off depends on your machine, content motion, and workload.

Match YouTube’s bitrate guidance to a realistic target
YouTube’s H.264 live-ingestion table, current at access in 2026, lists these minimum and recommended video bitrates. They are platform recommendations for the indicated output format—not evidence that an older PC can encode or sustain each setting.

For a 720p H.264 stream, 8 Mbps is YouTube’s recommended video bitrate, but the internet connection also needs capacity for audio and network overhead. The cited guidance does not establish one universal overhead allowance. Run an upload-speed test, then validate the chosen bitrate with a representative stream instead of treating a single speed-test result as proof of all-day stability.

Test the whole stream before relying on it
- Prepare the same kind of video, audio, and scene complexity you intend to stream. Moving game footage can stress the encoder differently from a mostly static screen.
- Run an upload-speed test on the connection the PC will actually use. Keep in mind that other devices and changing network conditions can affect sustained upload capacity.
- Start a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast using the intended OBS profile. Check both OBS’s connection and dropped-frame indicators and YouTube’s stream-health status.
- Let the test run for an extended period, rather than treating a brief successful connection as evidence for a 24/7 workload.
- Track encoder warnings, dropped frames, YouTube stream health, PC temperatures or shutdowns, and internet interruptions. These checks help distinguish encoding strain, thermal or power problems, and network instability.
YouTube says it automatically detects encoder settings by default and transcodes a live stream into different output formats for viewers. That does not remove the need to check the incoming stream’s health or confirm the selected settings work for your setup.
Troubleshoot by identifying the symptom
Quick Sync does not appear in OBS
OBS cannot use QSV if it is not offered for the current configuration. Check the Intel graphics hardware, whether it is enabled, and the relevant drivers and software configuration. OBS’s documented support floor is Intel HD Graphics on Core i-series 2xxx or newer for Windows and Linux, with 4xxx or newer recommended for better quality; this guidance does not guarantee compatibility on every PC at those generations.

OBS shows increasing dropped frames or a yellow/red connection indicator
OBS explains that these signs indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate; OBS drops frames to avoid buffering. Test the connection and lower the bitrate if needed, while preserving upload headroom for audio and overhead. Lowering encoder workload alone may not fix network-side dropped frames.
The encoder overloads or the PC struggles to render
This points toward system workload rather than upload capacity. Reduce the frame rate if it is above 30 fps; Intel specifically suggests lowering to 30 fps when frames continue dropping. If the stream still cannot stay stable, step down resolution and bitrate together, then retest with the real scene and audio. The exact sustainable setting depends on the PC and content.

The stream starts successfully but fails later
A successful start does not prove that the PC, power, connection, and software will remain stable over a full day. Use an extended test and monitor temperatures, shutdowns, network interruptions, OBS warnings, and YouTube stream health. The official encoder and troubleshooting guidance does not certify continuous operation or specify a universal recovery configuration for every machine.
