OBS Studio is the best-supported free starting choice for putting a church service or video playlist on YouTube Live. It sends the media feed from a local computer to YouTube, but it does not provide unattended hosting: the computer, power, internet connection and encoder feed must keep working. If you need playback to continue without a computer running at the church, a cloud option such as StreamNeo is an alternative.
Which option fits your church?
| Option | Best for | What keeps the stream running |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | A YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos to play continuously without a local computer staying on. | Cloud playback; upload videos, add the YouTube stream key and go live. One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps; the first day is free. |
| OBS Studio | A church that wants a free local encoder and production control, and can keep its computer and connection running. | Your computer, power, internet connection and OBS feed. OBS is free to use and has no watermark or usage limitations, but is not an always-on hosting guarantee. |
| Other cloud playout services | A church seeking hosted playback without a dedicated local PC. | A provider’s cloud service. YouTube’s encoder guide lists cloud services describing 24/7 prerecorded streaming, but their prices, availability in India and partner terms are not established here. |
For production involving cameras, microphones, graphics or scene switching, OBS can serve as the encoder and production software; YouTube explains that encoders can work with external audio/video hardware and advanced productions. A simple uploaded-video loop has different needs from a live service with camera feeds, so choose based on what you need to put on screen and who can monitor it.
What “continuous” means in practice
A playlist only determines which item plays next. In a local OBS setup, it does not restart OBS or restore a failed internet connection. Continuity depends on each part of the chain:
- Playback: the media source or playlist must advance as intended.
- Encoding: OBS must remain open and continue sending a feed.
- Power and hardware: the computer and any production equipment must stay on.
- Network: the connection must sustain the outgoing bitrate. OBS’s help guidance says increasing dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate.
- Monitoring: someone should be able to notice and respond if the feed, audio or connection fails.
For a church that cannot reliably keep a dedicated computer and connection operating, cloud playback is a better fit than treating a playlist as a guarantee of 24/7 service.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up a YouTube Live stream with OBS
- Confirm live streaming is enabled. YouTube says enabling it for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Do this ahead of the service rather than on Sunday. Once enabled, a stream can go live instantly.
- Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio. A playlist in OBS and a YouTube Live event are separate things: the encoder sends the media feed, while the event is set up in Studio. Scheduling creates an upcoming event viewers can share, and can provide reminders.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In the stream settings in OBS, enter the server URL and stream key provided by YouTube Studio. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or include it in a screen capture. If you need to replace a disclosed key, generate or select a new one in Studio and update OBS.
- Build the playback or production scene. Add the media or playlist source for prerecorded service material. For a service with cameras, microphones, titles or scene changes, add and test the sources the production requires. Keep the setup as simple as the service allows.
- Check the outgoing feed. Confirm that the intended video and audio reach YouTube, then verify the event status and viewer playback. For a scheduled service, test against the scheduled event rather than assuming the playlist alone creates a live broadcast.
- Monitor the stream while it runs. Watch for dropped frames, missing audio, a stalled playlist or a disconnected encoder. A local workflow needs someone and a working local setup to respond.
Choose settings your connection can sustain
There is no single bitrate or resolution that is right for every church connection. Set output quality to what the real upload connection can sustain consistently, with headroom for normal variation. If dropped frames increase, reduce the configured bitrate or output resolution and test again; church-production guidance recommends trying 720p when 1080p is unstable. That is practical secondary advice, not a YouTube guarantee.
- Test the actual church computer and internet connection, not just a different network used during setup.
- Prefer a stable feed over a higher resolution that repeatedly drops frames.
- Keep scenes and sources manageable for the computer doing the encoding.
- Check sound at the receiving end; a local preview alone does not establish that remote viewers hear it correctly.
YouTube’s encoder instructions describe the general workflow and do not specify a separate India-only setup. Actual reliability depends on the church’s local internet, power and equipment.

Rehearse before the service and plan the replay
Midweek, confirm that the stream key works and run a private or unlisted rehearsal with a remote viewer. Ask the viewer to check sound and scene changes, then watch the recording back. These steps follow recommendations from Mambo Mutinda, Founder & CEO of TajiCast, in a vendor-authored church-streaming guide; they are practitioner advice, not results of an independent test.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on a complete automatic archive for an indefinitely long broadcast. If the church needs a dependable replay, plan shorter broadcasts or a separate local recording.

Copyright and channel suitability
Before streaming or archiving music, readings, recorded performances or other material, confirm that the church has the rights or permissions needed for both the live broadcast and the replay. A YouTube Live event does not change the copyright status of the media in the playlist. Also consider whether the channel’s content and presentation meet YouTube’s applicable policies; the encoder setup itself does not establish eligibility for every channel or use.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a feed | Live streaming is not enabled yet, the event is not set up, or the server URL or stream key is incorrect. | Allow up to 24 hours for first-time live activation; check the Studio event and copy its current connection details into OBS. |
| Dropped frames increase | The connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. | Lower bitrate or resolution, check the connection on the streaming computer, and repeat a remote-viewer test. |
| Playlist plays locally but the channel is offline | Playback is working, but OBS is not sending a connected feed to the YouTube event. | Check OBS’s connection and the event in Studio; remember that a playlist does not create or reconnect the live event by itself. |
| Viewers cannot hear the service clearly | The audio source, routing or level may be wrong, or the remote feed differs from the local preview. | Have a remote viewer check sound during rehearsal and listen to the recording afterward. |
| The replay is incomplete or unavailable | The broadcast may have run 12 hours or longer, outside YouTube’s stated automatic-archive condition. | Use shorter broadcasts or make a separate local recording if a reliable replay is important. |
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos, not a camera-based live production tool. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home or at the church for playback; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo and the plan details; for a church in India, UPI works.
