If YouTube warns that your live stream’s keyframes are too frequent or too far apart, set the active streaming encoder’s keyframe interval to 2 seconds. If its setting uses frames, calculate the frame count from your stream’s output frame rate: at 30 fps, use 60 frames. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. YouTube’s live encoder guidance and live-stream error guidance describe the recommended interval and warning.
What the keyframe interval warning means
A keyframe, also called an I-frame, is a full video frame from which a decoder can reconstruct subsequent frames. The keyframe interval is the time or number of frames between those keyframes; the encoder’s GOP (group of pictures) settings control that pattern.
YouTube’s warning means the incoming stream’s keyframes appear too frequent or too infrequent. A very small GOP can reduce image quality, while an interval that is too long can contribute to buffering. Read the specific warning and reported interval before changing other settings: the direction matters.
YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. If the encoder setting is in frames, convert using the live output frame rate: interval in seconds × frames per second. For example, 2 seconds × 30 fps = 60 frames. Recalculate if you change the output frame rate.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Fix the setting in your streaming encoder
- Open the live streaming output settings. Change the encoder used to send the stream, not a separate recording output. In OBS, streaming and recording can use different encoder controls; changing a recording-only value will not change what YouTube receives. Exact menus and options vary by OBS version and encoder.
- Find the keyframe control. It may be labelled “Keyframe Interval,” “Keyframe Frequency,” or GOP interval. OBS documents a keyframe interval setting; its NVENC guidance also describes frame-based values and a custom
keyintoption. See OBS’s NVENC options guidance. - Set the interval to 2 seconds. If the field is measured in frames, use the count for the stream’s output frame rate. At 30 fps, enter 60 frames. At another frame rate, calculate the equivalent rather than copying the 30 fps example.
- Select Closed GOP if the encoder offers the choice. YouTube says its pipeline requires a Closed GOP for optimal transcoding when the encoder exposes an Open/Closed GOP option. If the setting is unavailable, do not assume you can enable it elsewhere; continue with the interval and stream-health checks.
- Test a representative stream. Start a test with typical motion and audio, then review YouTube’s stream health and messages. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring health during the event; see its live encoder settings guidance.
If the warning returns
- Verify the active output. Make sure the stream is using the encoder profile you edited, including any per-stream or platform-specific overrides. A correctly configured recording profile does not prove the live profile matches.
- Check units and frame rate together. Confirm whether the control expects seconds or frames, then compare the value with the live output frame rate. A frame count that was correct at one frame rate represents a different interval at another.
- Follow the direction of YouTube’s warning. Too-frequent keyframes, too-infrequent keyframes, and a small GOP describe different observed conditions. Use YouTube’s reported condition to guide the next check rather than changing unrelated bitrate or resolution settings.
- Check what the stream actually sends. YouTube notes that ingestion errors can cause incorrect GOP sizes. If the encoder UI shows 2 seconds but YouTube reports another interval, inspect the emitted stream and ingest stability; the displayed setting alone does not establish what reached YouTube.
- Keep keyframes consistent. OBS advises consistent intervals without adaptive I-frames or scene cuts to help YouTube’s automatic quality selector transition smoothly among transcoded versions. Encoder options differ, so change these only if your encoder exposes them and you can verify their effect.
- Retest and monitor health. There is no single universal cause established for a persistent warning. Check the output configuration and stream diagnostics before concluding that the encoder itself is defective.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video running as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an encoder-setting fix: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded file at its original quality, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
