At YouTube’s recommended H.264 settings for 30 fps, a 24/7 4K stream uses about three times the VPS outbound bandwidth of 1080p. Over exactly 30 days, that is about 9,051 GiB for 4K30 versus 3,017 GiB for 1080p30—roughly 6,034 GiB more before audio and protocol overhead. The resulting bill depends on your VPS plan’s included transfer and overage rate, not on a universal 4K surcharge.
How much bandwidth do 1080p and 4K use?
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends H.264 ingest bitrates of 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 30 Mbps for 2160p (4K) at 30 fps. For a stream running continuously for 30 days, the approximate transfer works out as follows:
| Stream setting | Recommended H.264 bitrate | Outbound data in 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | About 3,017 GiB |
| 4K30 (2160p30) | 30 Mbps | About 9,051 GiB |
| Difference | 20 Mbps more | About 6,034 GiB more |
The estimate uses bitrate × seconds in 30 days ÷ 8 and converts bytes to GiB using 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes. The figures are calculated estimates, not totals published by YouTube. They assume a constant bitrate and exactly 30 days of operation; audio and protocol overhead add traffic.
Month length and actual bitrate matter
A 31-day month adds about 3.3% to the 30-day estimate; a 28-day month reduces it by about 6.7%. The numbers also depend on the bitrate you actually configure. YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec and frame rate: its guidance covers H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, so these H.264-at-30-fps calculations should not be applied unchanged to other settings.

Worked monthly cost: DigitalOcean example
DigitalOcean’s published pricing lists a 16 GiB Basic Droplet at $96 per month with 6,000 GiB of transfer. Its billing documentation says outbound transfer allowances are pooled across a customer’s team, additional outbound transfer costs $0.01 per GiB, and inbound transfer to Droplets is free. The provider says its bandwidth page was last verified on 2026-09-14; prices and quotas can change, so check the current pricing and billing pages before choosing a plan.
| Scenario on the example plan | Estimated outbound transfer for 30 days | Allowance result | Estimated overage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 at 10 Mbps | About 3,017 GiB | Within 6,000 GiB | $0, if no other usage changes the result |
| 4K30 at 30 Mbps | About 9,051 GiB | About 3,051 GiB above 6,000 GiB | About $30.51 at $0.01/GiB |
On these assumptions, the 4K bandwidth premium over 1080p is about $30.51 for 30 days. If the same $96 plan is otherwise adequate, the 4K case would total about $126.51 for that month. This is an arithmetic example using published plan and overage figures, not a general VPS-market price or a recommendation of that server size. The shared allowance matters: other Droplets using the team pool can consume part of it, while a larger plan with more included transfer could avoid the example overage.

Why the VPS bill may rise by more than bandwidth
The calculations above cover outbound data transfer only. They do not establish the CPU or RAM needed for a particular stream. A VPS that relays an already-encoded feed has a different workload from one that decodes and re-encodes video at 4K. YouTube’s ingest bitrate guidance is not a VPS sizing benchmark, and the available figures do not support a universal compute premium for 4K.
- If the VPS only forwards an encoded feed, compare the provider’s transfer allowance and overage rule against your expected outbound GiB.
- If it encodes or transcodes the video, account separately for whether the instance can handle the selected codec, frame rate, and resolution. A higher-capacity instance may cost more, but the amount requires a specific workload and server assessment.
Count VPS-to-YouTube ingest, not viewer playback
For a VPS sending a live stream directly to YouTube, the relevant VPS transfer estimate is the upload to YouTube’s ingest servers. YouTube says it automatically transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple output formats so viewers can watch across devices and networks. That downstream playback delivery is not additional outbound traffic from your VPS in this setup.

For a reproducible estimate, identify the encoder, codec, target frame rate and configured bitrate; multiply the bitrate by the actual number of seconds streamed; convert bytes to GiB; then compare that result with the provider’s outbound allowance and overage rate. Check whether the allowance is pooled and whether other workloads use it.
