First capture what happened at the same timestamp on the VPS and in YouTube Live Control Room; then match the fix to the failure mode.
Identify what stopped
“VOD stream” can mean a prerecorded gameplay video being sent as a live stream, or a live gameplay session. The diagnostic distinction is the same either way: establish whether the encoder process exited, stayed alive but stopped making progress, or kept producing output locally while delivery to YouTube failed. The title alone cannot identify the cause.
- Record the failure signature. Save encoder logs with timestamps, the process or service exit status, restart history, and YouTube stream-health messages around the failure. Redact stream keys and other credentials before sharing logs.
- Check process and media progress. Determine whether the encoder is still running and whether its frame or progress count continues to advance. Note errors such as input EOF, encoder errors, a broken pipe, or a connection reset; these are clues to investigate, not proof of a particular cause.
- Compare the local output with YouTube. If you record an archive locally, inspect the same time range. A healthy local recording alongside a failed YouTube stream points the investigation toward delivery or ingest; a missing or damaged local output warrants checking the input, encoder, and host as well.
- Check VPS resources and outbound connectivity. Review CPU and memory pressure, disk space if recording, and the VPS provider’s network metrics. A short speed test does not establish that the connection can sustain the stream for hours. YouTube advises matching stream quality to available upload capacity and testing before going live. YouTube’s live encoder settings describe recommended settings and connection testing.
- Compare YouTube’s stream health with VPS timestamps. Check incoming status and error messages in Live Control Room. If one viewer reports a playback problem, it may be specific to that viewer; reports across different networks can point more toward the encoder or stream. YouTube recommends checking encoder errors, CPU load, a local archive, and the outbound connection when troubleshooting. Its guidance notes: “If your stream looks and sounds healthy, there may be an issue with your outbound Internet connection.” YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide covers these checks.
Match recovery to the failure mode

A public Ubuntu/FFmpeg project describes combining a process restart policy, a progress watchdog, and periodic restarts. That is one operator’s setup, not an official YouTube recommendation, a guarantee, or evidence that a particular restart interval suits your stream. Use supervision only with logging that lets you see what triggered it.
Verify YouTube encoder settings
Settings are worth checking, especially if the encoder’s output or stream-health messages report a mismatch. They do not, on their own, explain why a stream runs for hours and then stops. YouTube’s guidance recommends RTMPS and constant bitrate (CBR); lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps; and calls for a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Choose a bitrate your connection can reliably sustain, test with representative movement and audio before the event, and monitor stream health. See YouTube’s current encoder-setting guidance.

The following are YouTube Help’s recommended bitrates; the page was accessed in 2026. They are published recommendations, not a measurement of what a particular VPS can sustain.

Do not raise the bitrate just because the stream has failed. First compare the configured rate with sustained outbound capacity and YouTube’s reported stream health. A connection that cannot reliably hold the selected rate can make delivery unstable.

Troubleshoot by symptom
- The service restarted, but the stream stopped again. Check the new failure timestamp and exit or stall signature. A restart policy may bring back a process that exits, but repeated restarts do not identify why it exits or repair a recurring upstream fault.
- The process is running, but the picture is frozen. Check whether frame or progress counters advance. If they do not, inspect input progress and encoder logs; a basic process supervisor may not detect a silent stall.
- The VPS-side output looks healthy, but viewers cannot watch. Compare YouTube’s incoming status and messages with the VPS-side timestamps, then inspect sustained outbound connectivity. YouTube identifies the outbound connection as a possible issue when encoder output looks and sounds healthy.
- The stream health degrades before it ends. Compare the configured bitrate with the VPS’s sustained upload capacity, inspect host load, and verify the recommended encoder settings. A brief throughput test is not enough to establish long-duration stability.
- You suspect a provider or hardware problem. Look for provider-side performance or service evidence before changing VPS hosts or buying equipment. The symptom alone does not establish a faulty router, cable, encoder device, or VPS provider.
