To run a Kannada podcast stream from a Linux VPS, create a YouTube live stream, configure an encoder such as FFmpeg on the VPS to send both video and audio to YouTube over RTMPS, then keep the encoder running under a service manager and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube requires video as well as audio, so an audio-only feed is not enough: pair the podcast audio with a suitable visual, such as a static title card or a waveform. The settings below follow YouTube’s general encoder guidance; they are not Kannada-specific, and the sample command is an implementation pattern, not a tested configuration.
What you need before you start
- A Linux VPS with a stable outbound connection able to sustain the selected video and audio bitrate. The sources do not establish a particular VPS size; choose one based on the encoder, codec, resolution, and available CPU, then test it under representative load.
- FFmpeg installed with the encoders needed for your chosen settings. Confirm what your installed build supports with
ffmpeg -encoders; package contents and command options vary by distribution and build. - A Kannada podcast audio file or live audio source, plus a video input. A still image can be used as a visual for a recorded podcast, or you can prepare a moving visual if the show needs one.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
YouTube’s live API distinguishes a stream—the incoming feed—from a broadcast to which that stream is associated. You can create or select an event in Live Control Room, then use its current ingest details for the VPS encoder. YouTube’s API allows an ingestion stream to be associated with one or more broadcasts. See the YouTube LiveStreams API reference.
Choose the video and audio settings
YouTube’s encoder recommendations are generic, not specific to Kannada-language content. The figures below are recommendations on YouTube Help accessed October 3, 2026—not results of a VPS test—and should be checked against the current guidance before publishing or scheduling a stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), progressive scan, square pixels, and Rec. 709 for SDR video. Its Live Control Room detects resolution and frame rate by default when you use it.
| Setting or format | YouTube guidance | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p, 30 fps, H.264 | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended | Use if the visual benefits from 1080p and the VPS connection can reliably sustain the upload rate. |
| 720p, 30 fps, H.264 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended | A lower-resolution option for a simple podcast visual or a more constrained connection. |
| 1080p, 30 fps, AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 4 Mbps minimum; 10 Mbps recommended | Consider only if your FFmpeg build and YouTube ingest details support the chosen codec and the VPS can encode it reliably. |
| Stereo audio | 44.1 kHz sample rate; 128 kbps recommended bitrate | Keep the source and encoder settings consistent with the podcast audio you intend to send. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds | Set a fixed two-second GOP for the example below. |
YouTube also recommends matching upload bitrate to a reliable connection and testing with audio and video movement similar to the actual program. For bitrate figures and any changes to the recommendations, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Create the YouTube live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or select the broadcast and its associated stream. Labels and available choices can change, so use the current interface for your channel.
- In the stream settings, retrieve the current server or ingest URL and stream key. Use the exact endpoint shown for that stream; do not copy an ingest URL from an old tutorial.
- Keep the stream key secret. Do not place it in public scripts, screenshots, repositories, chat messages, or logs. Store it in a protected environment file or another secret store readable only by the account that runs the encoder.
- Check whether your encoder expects the ingest URL and stream name separately or as a combined destination. The YouTube API describes an ingestion address and stream name; some encoders accept both fields, while others expect a combined form such as
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME.
For RTMPS, Google’s developer guidance requires the rtmps protocol, the valid YouTube endpoint and application path, port 443, and the server hostname for SNI during the TLS handshake. In Google’s words: “Connections must be made to port 443, and the server hostname is required for authentication via the SNI extension in the SSL handshake.” Follow Google’s RTMPS delivery guide and the endpoint currently provided by Live Control Room or the API.
Prepare a visual for the podcast
A YouTube live input needs video as well as audio; the YouTube Live API lists a missing video stream as a configuration issue. For a recorded podcast, a simple still visual can be less demanding to encode than a detailed animated scene. The following command uses a single image and a local audio file as an example. Replace the paths and ingest destination with your own, and check the installed FFmpeg options before using it.

Example FFmpeg command for a recorded episode
This pattern loops a still image, reads an audio file, encodes H.264 video and AAC stereo audio, and sends both to an RTMPS destination. It is not a verified command for every FFmpeg build or YouTube stream configuration; test it with your installed version and current ingest details.
ffmpeg
-loop 1 -framerate 30 -i /path/to/podcast-cover.jpg
-i /path/to/kannada-episode.wav
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage
-pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-b:v 5M -minrate 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-shortest -f flv "rtmps://CURRENT_INGEST_ENDPOINT/CURRENT_STREAM_KEY"
The video options target 1080p only if the input image and output sizing are set accordingly; to specify output dimensions explicitly, add a suitable filter such as -vf "scale=1920:1080,setsar=1" for a 16:9 visual. For a 720p stream, use an appropriate 1280×720 output and select a bitrate within YouTube’s current recommendation for that resolution and frame rate. The example uses a two-second keyframe interval at 30 fps (60 frames). -shortest ends the output when the shorter input finishes, which is useful for a finite episode but not for a continuous program. If looping a recorded episode as a continuous stream, arrange looping deliberately and confirm the intended end behavior rather than relying on -shortest.

Do not substitute the placeholder destination literally. Use the exact RTMPS hostname, application path, and stream key from your current YouTube stream. Avoid putting a real key in shell history or a process listing visible to other users; how to conceal it depends on your distribution and process-management setup. A protected environment file or a service manager’s secret handling is safer than committing the value in a script.
Run the encoder reliably on the VPS
For a one-off rehearsal, run the command in a terminal and observe its output. For a scheduled or continuous broadcast, use the service manager supplied by your Linux distribution—commonly systemd—or another supervisor so the process can be started, stopped, and inspected predictably. The exact service unit, permissions, restart policy, environment-file handling, and log location depend on the distribution and how FFmpeg was installed; do not copy a generic unit file without adapting it.

- Run the encoder under a dedicated, unprivileged account where practical.
- Limit access to the script and any file containing the stream key. Exclude secret files from source control and backups that are not protected.
- Configure the supervisor to restart the encoder after an unexpected exit, but investigate repeated restarts rather than treating them as proof that the stream is healthy.
- Make sure the source media remains available at the paths used by the service account, and verify disk space and file permissions.
- Use the VPS firewall and network policy for the outbound connection required by the selected RTMPS endpoint. Google’s RTMPS guidance specifies port 443; do not open unrelated inbound ports unless your own administration workflow requires them.
Rehearse and monitor the broadcast
- Before the scheduled broadcast, rehearse with representative Kannada speech, the actual visual, and the expected stream duration. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and video motion to the live program.
- Start the encoder and confirm that Live Control Room receives the feed. Check the preview, audio meter, selected event, and stream-health feedback before going public.
- During the stream, monitor both the encoder process on the VPS and YouTube’s health indicators. If health diagnostics report a configuration issue, use that feedback to check codec, sample rate, missing audio or video, bitrate, keyframe spacing, and ingestion first.
- After ending a broadcast, allow time for YouTube to process the archived video. The API notes that the converted video is not necessarily available immediately and processing time depends on broadcast length.
YouTube’s API health reference includes issue types for unsupported audio or video codecs, audio sample-rate errors, missing audio or video, bitrate that is too high or too low, keyframes spaced too far apart, and insufficient video ingestion. See the API stream-health reference when Live Control Room flags a problem.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS connection fails before the stream appears | Protocol, endpoint, port, or TLS/SNI handling | Use the current YouTube RTMPS endpoint and application path; ensure the client connects to port 443 and preserves the server hostname for SNI. Check that the encoder is not using cleartext RTMP against an RTMPS endpoint. |
| Live Control Room reports no video | Video input or encoder mapping | Confirm the image/video input exists, the output includes a video stream, and the process is not sending audio only. |
| Audio is absent or flagged | Input selection, codec, or sample rate | Check FFmpeg input mapping and output audio codec; use an audio format supported by YouTube’s current guidance and verify stereo sample rate settings. |
| Bitrate warning or unstable ingest | Encoder rate control or VPS outbound capacity | Use CBR, match the bitrate to the chosen resolution/frame rate recommendation, and confirm the VPS upload connection can sustain it reliably. |
| Keyframe warning | GOP/keyframe configuration | Set keyframes about every two seconds and never more than four seconds apart; at 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP is two seconds. |
| The stream stops when an episode ends | Input duration and command end behavior | For a one-time episode, this may be expected. For a continuous broadcast, configure an intentional playlist or loop and validate that the supervisor and encoder handle the transition. |
| Encoder repeatedly restarts | Process errors, unavailable media, permissions, or VPS resources | Inspect the service logs, confirm the service account can read every input, and check CPU, memory, disk, and network behavior under load before changing bitrate or resolution. |
Copyright and YouTube live rules to check
Technical compliance does not establish that you have the right to broadcast the podcast’s music, clips, artwork, or guest recordings. Before going live, confirm you have the permissions needed for every included asset and review YouTube’s current policies for live content. A Kannada-language program follows the same ingest requirements described above; the available technical guidance does not set separate Kannada encoder settings.
