You can keep recorded calculus lessons live on YouTube by sending a looping video or lesson playlist through an encoder such as OBS, or by using a cloud service to play uploaded videos. For a do-it-yourself setup, prepare an original, clearly organized lesson library; activate YouTube live streaming; connect an encoder with your stream key; and test the full loop before going public. A continuous stream is not a substitute for an organized archive of individual lessons.
Plan the lesson channel before you stream
Build a course viewers can navigate
Arrange lessons into a deliberate sequence, such as limits and continuity, derivatives, applications of derivatives, integrals, and series. Give each recording a clear topic title, level, prerequisites, and next lesson. A short opening card can tell viewers who arrive mid-stream what they are watching and where the lesson fits.
Design the rotation to teach, not just to fill time. Include worked examples, pauses for practice, and recaps; vary the explanations and examples across recordings. YouTube’s monetization policy applies to livestreams and says channels should publish original, authentic work rather than mass-produced, generic, or repetitive content. YouTube may consider the channel’s overall theme, most-viewed and newest videos, metadata, and About section during review. Its policy says, “Be your original creation. If you borrow content from someone else, you need to change it significantly to make it your own.” Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
Check rights for every asset
Use recordings you made or have permission to broadcast. Check music, images, textbook excerpts, diagrams, and other graphics as well as the lesson itself. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches; a match may replace the picture with a placeholder, interrupt the stream, or lead to termination. A license may not prevent a live interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Keep permission records and ask rights holders about allowlisting when relevant. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Activate YouTube live streaming and connect an encoder
- Verify the channel and enable live streaming in advance. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. The channel must have no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance.
- Create or schedule a broadcast in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and create the stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the broadcast into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not display it in a recording or share it publicly. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the connection flow.
- Check the preview before going public. Confirm the correct source is playing, the sound is audible, the lesson label is readable, and the stream is going to the intended broadcast. Start with an unlisted test if you want to inspect the experience without publishing it to viewers.
YouTube’s current setup guidance lists a limit of 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key. These are platform concurrency limits, not a recommendation to run multiple streams. Recheck the linked YouTube setup page if you need those limits for a specific configuration.
Loop recorded lessons in OBS
OBS supports local video playback and looping through its media sources. The exact workflow depends on whether you are broadcasting one long compilation or a sequence of separate lessons.

Loop one compiled lesson video
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the local video file.
- Enable the source’s Loop setting.
- Position and size the video in the scene. Add a course or lesson label and a brief notice that the channel is playing recorded lessons, if useful.
- Preview playback through the end and confirm it starts again as expected.
Loop a playlist of separate lessons
- Add a VLC Video Source in OBS and create a playlist from the lesson files.
- Enable Loop Playlist, then check file order, transitions, and whether each lesson starts and ends cleanly.
- Play through the playlist far enough to verify the next file loads and that the final file returns to the first.
OBS documents both methods in its media sources guide. A playlist of discrete lessons is easier to update and organize than one enormous file, but test the transition behavior and give late arrivals enough context to identify the topic.
Choose a presentation and test the machine
Keep equations legible at the size viewers will see on phones and desktop screens. If you offer a portrait layout, preview it carefully: cropping can cut off equations or writing. YouTube distinguishes horizontal and vertical live experiences, so choose a layout that fits the lesson rather than assuming one crop works everywhere.

A pen tablet with a stylus is one option for writing original derivations digitally, but it is not required if your existing tablet, document camera, or writing setup produces clear results. A microphone is useful for narrated explanations; YouTube lists microphones among typical external encoder hardware. Do not add gear unless it solves a real readability or audio problem.
Test the chosen OBS scene and stream on the actual computer that will run it. OBS notes that meeting basic system requirements does not guarantee streaming performance: CPU demand depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. See the OBS system requirements. Check that playback, writing, audio, and scene transitions remain stable together.

Choose local or cloud playback
Run OBS on a computer you control
Local OBS gives you direct control over scenes and playlist behavior, but the computer, power, and network connection must remain available for playback. Decide who will monitor the broadcast, how you will respond to YouTube warnings, and how the stream will recover after a restart. Keep backup copies of the source videos. These steps reduce operational risk; they do not guarantee nonstop uptime.
Use a cloud service to avoid leaving a home computer on
#1 StreamNeo: It keeps uploaded videos playing to YouTube from the cloud, so the stream can continue without a home computer running; any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps is included at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.

For a recorded calculus channel, upload the lesson recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera, and it streams to YouTube only. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, along with 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. The same features apply on every plan; only the billing period changes. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
Keep reliable lesson archives alongside the live channel
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous broadcast longer than that is not a dependable way to preserve one complete replay. Keep clean local masters and upload individual public lessons with useful titles, descriptions, chapters, and playlists so viewers can find a specific topic without waiting for it to come around in the loop.
YouTube says public archived livestreams can contribute to qualified watch hours, while streams that are not archived do not. That does not by itself establish eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program; the channel remains subject to the broader program requirements and review. See YouTube’s qualified watch-hours guidance.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot common problems
- Live streaming is not available yet: First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Verify the channel, enable livestreaming in advance, and check whether a restriction within the previous 90 days applies.
- The encoder will not connect: Confirm you copied the server URL and stream key for the correct YouTube broadcast. If you suspect the key was exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- The lesson does not repeat: For a single Media Source, check Loop. For a VLC playlist, check Loop Playlist and confirm the selected files and their order.
- A lesson is silent, unreadable, or cropped: Check the source’s audio, OBS scene levels, text placement, and preview at the intended orientation. Re-test the full layout on a phone-sized display as well as a desktop preview.
- The stream stops or shows a placeholder: Review YouTube Studio alerts and check for third-party matches. Resolve rights issues and ask a rights holder about Content ID allowlisting where you have a license.
- The computer struggles during playback: Reduce scene complexity or adjust encoding settings and test again. OBS performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene, so a specification alone cannot confirm that your particular setup will hold up.
