Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to feed a sequence of podcast files to a YouTube Live encoder when the files already have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. It joins them virtually; it does not normalize mismatched episodes. Create a UTF-8 playlist, check the media, then send the playlist through FFmpeg to the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key provided by YouTube.
When the concat demuxer is the right tool
The concat demuxer presents a text-scripted sequence of media files as one virtual input. It can avoid re-encoding when the inputs are already compatible. FFmpeg requires every file to have the same streams, codecs, and time bases; the demuxer does not fix different resolutions, sample rates, channel layouts, missing audio, or codecs. - Use the demuxer if the episodes have matching stream layouts and formats, and you want to preserve their encoded packets where possible.
- Prepare compatible intermediate files first, or use FFmpeg’s concat filter if the episodes differ and need re-encoding. The filter works with decoded media and re-encoding; the demuxer joins packet streams. FFmpeg describes the alternatives in its concatenation FAQ.
- The concat protocol is a different, file-level method; it is not a substitute for a playlist script.
Build the concat playlist
Create the script
Save a UTF-8 plain-text file named playlist.ffconcat beside the episode files:

file 'episode-03.mp4'For automatic recognition, the header must be the very first line exactly as shown: no blank line or byte-order mark before it. Each file line names one input in playback order. Relative paths are convenient when the files sit together, but check how they resolve from the FFmpeg process’s working directory. Escape special characters as required by FFmpeg’s script syntax; filenames containing spaces or quotes deserve a deliberate check against the documentation.

Choose safe paths deliberately
The concat demuxer’s safe option is on by default and rejects some path forms. A command may use -safe 0 to permit paths that fail that check, but this disables the restriction. Use it only with a playlist and files you control and trust; do not copy it as a routine flag without considering the paths.
Check compatibility before streaming
- Inspect the FFmpeg build: run
ffmpeg -versionand confirm the installed build includes the encoder you plan to use. - Inspect each episode: use
ffprobeto compare video and audio stream counts, codecs, time bases, and audio layout. Confirm every file has the same expected streams. - Resolve mismatches: transcode or otherwise prepare the files into matching intermediate formats, or construct a concat-filter workflow that decodes and re-encodes them. Do not expect the demuxer to add missing audio or reconcile incompatible media.
- Check durations and transitions: FFmpeg shifts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and later files follow the preceding file. It uses each file’s duration to do this; inaccurate duration metadata or streams that end at different times can cause gaps or artifacts. The script’s
durationdirective can override a file’s reported duration. Providing durations for every file also enables seeking across the virtual input.
Test the exact playlist with representative transitions, including the first transition and any episode with a different encoding history or audio layout. If a transition produces a gap, overlap, or timestamp problem, investigate source durations and compatibility before changing output settings.

Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live
Get the ingest details
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and obtain its ingest URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP; use the secure endpoint YouTube provides. Keep the key private: it functions like a stream password. Do not publish it in screenshots, repositories, shared scripts, or shell history others can read. YouTube explains stream setup in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and key management in Manage live stream settings.
Adapt the command to your media and stream
This is an illustrative starting pattern, not a tested or guaranteed command. It encodes the output to create a consistent profile; verify option availability for your FFmpeg build and match the actual resolution, frame rate, encoder, and YouTube ingest settings:

FFmpeg input options belong before the relevant -i; output encoding and muxing options belong before the output URL. In production, avoid putting a real key into a publicly visible command or a shell history accessible to others.

The example’s-g 60at-r 30gives a two-second GOP.- The example’s video bitrate of 4,500 Kbps is not a universal recommendation. YouTube’s encoder-settings page lists H.264 at 1080p30 as 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; its video recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate. Choose from the current table for your actual output and ensure upload capacity can sustain it.
- YouTube lists 128 Kbps as its recommended stereo audio bitrate and 44.1 kHz as its listed stereo sample rate. The example uses these values, but verify that your material and selected output settings suit the current guidance.
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Set the GOP accordingly for your frame rate; a two-second GOP at 30 fps is 60 frames, as in the example. Confirm current ingest codecs, bitrate ranges, and settings in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide before going live.

Using -c copy instead of encoding may avoid re-encoding only when the source streams and output container and ingest expectations are compatible. It does not bypass the concat demuxer’s same-stream, codec, and time-base requirements, and mixed podcast assets are not guaranteed to work with stream copy.
Preflight and monitor the live stream
- Run the exact playlist and output command before the event; test representative audio, movement, and file transitions.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the encoder preview appears and audio is present before starting the public event.
- Leave practical upload-bandwidth headroom above the chosen bitrate to account for network variation.
- Check stream privacy, scheduling, and auto-start or auto-stop settings in YouTube separately; they are not concat-demuxer options.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health status and messages while live, and keep the playlist and source files locally.
- YouTube’s encoder setup help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Confirm current platform behavior and your account settings, and verify the resulting archive rather than treating it as your only master.
Troubleshooting common failures
