You’ll need an eligible YouTube channel, a reliable always-on computer and internet connection, and a plan for restarts and archives. The setup below explains how to prepare the files, configure YouTube, test the broadcast, and account for the limits of a local 24/7 stream.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; livestreaming is available to people aged 16 or older. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so check access early. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup guide.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can remain powered on and connected for the broadcast.
- Lesson files whose streams are compatible for sequential concatenation, plus enough storage and upload bandwidth for your chosen output.
- A YouTube encoder stream, its server URL, and its stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a public script or screenshot.
Prepare a compatible lesson playlist
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text file of media-file entries and processes their packets in sequence, as though the files had been muxed together. It does not fix incompatible recordings. Match the files’ stream layout, codecs, and time bases; mismatches may cause errors, artifacts, or unreliable transitions. Consult the FFmpeg Formats Documentation.
1. Inspect and organize the recordings
Put the lessons in the intended broadcast order in a directory. Check each file’s video and audio streams, codec, resolution, frame rate, and duration. If a recording differs in stream layout, codec, or time base, normalize or re-encode it to a consistent format before relying on concat. Re-encoding takes processing time and can affect quality, so inspect the output and each lesson transition before going live.
2. Create the concat list
Create a plain-text file such as lessons.ffconcat. The format can be as simple as:

file lesson-03.mp4The ffconcat version 1.0 marker must be the first line, with no leading spaces or byte-order mark, for automatic recognition. The default safe option is 1 and rejects unsafe paths. Keep playlist entries to safe, simple filenames in the playlist directory where possible. The option safe=0 allows arbitrary filenames and directives; use it only for a list you generated or reviewed from trusted inputs.
3. Confirm ordering and transitions
Verify that the list contains every intended lesson once and in the right order. Play through the end of one lesson and the start of the next. FFmpeg notes that incorrect duration information can introduce artifacts, so do not assume a playlist is sound merely because FFmpeg accepts it.

Set up the YouTube encoder stream
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the encoder stream you intend to use.
- Copy the displayed server URL and stream key into your FFmpeg configuration. Keep the key private; use a placeholder in scripts or examples shared with others.
- For a scheduled broadcast, follow YouTube’s Live Control Room flow, check the incoming preview, and start the broadcast as directed there. Starting an encoder connection and making a scheduled event public are separate parts of the workflow.
YouTube generally recommends RTMPS for encoder ingest. Use the server URL and protocol supplied for your stream, rather than assuming a URL or ingest mode that may not match your account’s setup. The YouTube encoder guide describes the setup flow.
Send the playlist with FFmpeg
There is no single safe command for every lesson collection and YouTube ingest configuration: the source stream layout, output encoding, and server URL can differ. The following example assumes compatible H.264 video and AAC audio in the source files, a playlist named lessons.ffconcat, and an RTMPS ingest URL. Replace the placeholder with the server URL and private stream key supplied in Live Control Room. Confirm stream mapping and encoding against your actual files before relying on it.

-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_SERVER/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"This illustrative copy-mode command reads the playlist in real time and forwards the first video stream and, if present, the first audio stream without re-encoding. It is appropriate only when the files’ streams are compatible with each other and the selected YouTube ingest settings. If you normalize or re-encode, choose output codecs and settings for the actual source and connection rather than copying this command unchanged. Never put a real stream key in a public example.
Choose encoder settings and test the broadcast
For an encoded output, choose resolution and bitrate based on the source material and a reliably measured upload connection; there is no universal bitrate for an unspecified course and network. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. It recommends RTMPS generally. Check YouTube’s encoder settings for current guidance.

- Test the complete playlist locally, including audio levels, lesson transitions, and the point where the last file ends.
- Connect FFmpeg to YouTube and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check picture, sound, and stream health before starting a scheduled event.
- Test with audio and movement similar to the planned course stream. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during the broadcast.
- Observe a full playlist cycle if practical. A successful short test does not prove a long-running process, host, or network will remain available.
Plan for continuous availability and archives
A concat playlist can provide continuous playback while FFmpeg is running, but playback continuity is not the same as guaranteed 24/7 availability. A local process can stop if the computer restarts, FFmpeg exits, power fails, or the internet connection drops. The cited YouTube and FFmpeg documentation does not certify an uptime level or supply a process supervisor for your computer.
For a real deployment, decide how you will detect a failed encoder, restart it, and restore the YouTube connection; test that recovery rather than assuming it. Keep the original lesson files and playlist somewhere you can recover them. The right monitoring and restart method depends on your operating system and hosting setup.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 broadcast exceeds that threshold, so do not count on one complete, automatically retained archive. If a complete course archive matters, plan separate recordings or divide the broadcast into shorter sessions, and verify the archive you need is available.
Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube does not show the encoder preview: confirm the channel can livestream, the correct stream is selected, and the server URL and stream key were copied from that stream. Check FFmpeg’s output for a connection or authentication error.
- FFmpeg rejects the playlist or stops at a file: check the first-line marker, playlist paths, file access, and safe-path behavior. With the default
safe=1, unsafe paths are rejected; do not switch tosafe=0unless every entry is trusted. - Audio or video breaks at a lesson boundary: inspect the files’ stream layouts, codecs, and time bases, and verify duration information. Normalize or re-encode incompatible recordings, then test the transition again.
- The stream health indicator reports trouble: check the connection’s measured upload capacity and stability, and make sure output settings follow YouTube’s recommendations. Lowering output demands may help when the connection cannot sustain them, but test the new settings in preview.
- The broadcast stops after a host or network interruption: the concat demuxer does not provide deployment-level recovery. Diagnose the host, power, process, and connection, then restart and confirm the incoming preview before resuming a scheduled broadcast.
