Shadowheart’s biggest outcomes hinge on two linked decisions: whether she spares Dame Aylin in the Shadowfell, and what she chooses to do with her parents in the House of Grief. Killing Aylin keeps Shadowheart on Shar’s path and costs the party Aylin and the protection of Last Light Inn. Sparing her opens a Selûnite path; later, Shadowheart can save her parents and keep Shar’s wound, or sacrifice them to be free of it. Neither route is a universally best ending—the consequences depend on which relationships and outcomes matter most to you.
What happens if Shadowheart kills or spares the Nightsong?
The Nightsong is Dame Aylin, a living woman imprisoned in the Shadowfell—not an artifact to retrieve. Shadowheart’s decision comes during the Gauntlet of Shar sequence in Act Two. Its consequences extend beyond her personal allegiance: Aylin’s fate affects the party’s allies and the people sheltering at Last Light Inn.

How the Nightsong decision is made
Approval and dialogue choices can affect whether Shadowheart will spare Aylin without a check. The community-maintained bg3.wiki quest documentation, accessed October 3, 2026, records that at 40 or higher approval, several neutral responses allow her to spare Aylin without a check; below 40, persuasion checks may be available. It also records a 20–39 approval interaction where enough Nightsong Points can remove those checks while the remaining dialogue still leads to Aylin’s death; the wiki labels that interaction likely a bug. Some direct dialogue choices lead to Aylin’s death regardless of approval or Nightsong Points.
These are documented dialogue mechanics, not a guarantee for every platform or game version. Larian’s Patch 6 notes include fixes to Shadowheart’s epilogue dialogue, and the cited documentation does not establish whether later versions changed these interaction details.

What changes in Act Three?
Shadowheart’s Act Three quest leads to the Cloister of Sombre Embrace, where she confronts Viconia and the Sharran cloister. If Shadowheart is present, the confrontation leads to a fight, though the Shar-loyal branch has differences in how she can sway clergy to her side. You can instead surrender her to Viconia in exchange for Sharran aid; doing so costs her as a companion, and she later reappears without memory of the adventuring party.
If Shadowheart has rejected Shar
Dame Aylin can reveal that Shadowheart’s parents, Arnell and Emmeline Hallowleaf, are imprisoned in the Chamber of Loss. Shadowheart must decide whether to rescue them and continue bearing Shar’s wound, or sacrifice them so their spirits can go to Selûne and she can be freed from Shar’s curse.

If the choice is left to Shadowheart without conditions that lead her to save them, she may ask her parents what they want and turn them into moonmotes. The bg3.wiki documents DC 20 Religion or Persuasion checks that can convince her to save them. It also documents a route without a persuasion check: at least 50 approval and at least two of three Act Three memories. Those memories are triggered at Allister Marnley’s gravestone in the graveyard, graffiti near the Baldur’s Gate waypoint, and the Night Orchid cave in the cloister. These conditions are documented routes, not independently verified guarantees across versions.
If Shadowheart remains a Dark Justiciar
Shar reveals that Arnell and Emmeline are Shadowheart’s parents and demands their deaths as a final test. If Shadowheart obeys, Shar removes her memories of them and leaves her positioned to lead the cloister. Their deaths are not inevitable on every Dark Justiciar playthrough: the quest documentation also describes a route to save them.

How do the choices affect Shadowheart’s ending?
The epilogue’s broad pattern reflects both Shadowheart’s allegiance and whether her parents are alive. The table describes the documented outcome patterns, not every variation in dialogue or romance.

Because Larian’s Patch 6 notes record fixes to Shadowheart’s epilogue dialogue, the documented broad outcomes are more dependable than treating every epilogue line as immutable across versions.

Which choices can make Shadowheart leave?
Some decisions can remove Shadowheart from the party permanently, not merely redirect her story:
- Entering the Shadowfell without her.
- Allowing Balthazar to take Dame Aylin.
- Surrendering her to Viconia at the House of Grief.
- Killing her rescued parents.
Consider these party consequences before committing to a route, especially if you want Shadowheart available for later companion scenes.

How to choose a route
There is no single outcome that preserves every benefit. Decide which consequence matters most to your playthrough: Aylin’s survival and Last Light Inn’s safety, Shadowheart’s freedom from Shar, her parents’ survival, or her continued place in the party. The trade-offs are concrete: sparing Aylin opens the Selûnite story; later, saving Shadowheart’s parents preserves her family life but not freedom from Shar’s wound, while sacrificing them frees her from the curse at the cost of their lives.
A line recorded in the quest documentation captures one character’s reaction when Shadowheart saves her parents: Minsc says to Boo and the player character, “‘Lady of Loss’. I see now, Boo – because she is always losing.” It is Minsc’s dialogue, not an objective judgment about which outcome is best.
