In OBS, go to Settings → Output, change Output Mode to Advanced, then adjust the streaming bitrate while keeping Rate Control set to CBR. Choose a rate that fits your resolution, frame rate and reliable upload capacity; then test and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
Where to change bitrate—and where to check it
Switchboard Live’s workflow page shows the incoming bitrate and frames per second beneath the stream preview. That readout helps you see what the encoder is sending, but the documented workflow does not identify it as a bitrate control. Change the bitrate in the encoder that sends the feed to Switchboard.
For OBS, Switchboard documents the setting under Settings → Output. Its OBS guide notes that output settings depend on upload speed and the destinations being used. If you use another encoder, find the streaming output bitrate setting in that encoder’s documentation; the OBS path does not apply to every program.
Change the bitrate in OBS
- In OBS, open Settings → Output.
- Set Output Mode to Advanced so the streaming output controls are available.
- Under the streaming output settings, lower the bitrate to a value appropriate for your stream format and dependable upload capacity.
- Keep Rate Control set to CBR. Switchboard’s OBS instructions recommend CBR; YouTube also specifies CBR for RTMP/RTMPS streams.
- Check the keyframe interval. Switchboard’s initial setup guide recommends two seconds, and YouTube recommends a two-second interval, not exceeding four seconds, for RTMP/RTMPS.
- Apply the change and test the stream before the broadcast. During the event, monitor both YouTube’s stream health and the incoming bitrate shown in Switchboard.
Switchboard’s initial setup guide also describes copying the stream URL and key into the encoder. Use the stream key associated with your YouTube broadcast and follow the encoder’s instructions for the destination setup.

Choose a bitrate for the format you actually send
There is no single correct lowered bitrate for every YouTube stream. YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube Help’s published recommended H.264 video rates, accessed October 3, 2026. Minimums are included for context; they are not recommended targets, and a rate that is too low for the image can reduce quality.
| Output format | YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate | YouTube H.264 minimum |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 21 Mbps | 7 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 34 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These H.264 values are reference points, not a guarantee that changing bitrate will fix every dropped-frame warning. YouTube lists separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265, so do not apply the H.264 table blindly if you are using another codec. Switchboard’s older encoder guidance states a 2 Mbps minimum video bitrate and minimum 720p at 30 fps for Switchboard Connect; that product minimum is not the same as YouTube’s format-specific recommendations.

If the current output rate is above what your connection can reliably sustain, reduce it and retest. If that is not enough, consider lowering the output resolution or frame rate to a format your connection can carry consistently, rather than forcing a high-resolution, high-frame-rate stream through insufficient upload capacity.
Test the right signal before and during the stream
Before going live
YouTube recommends a pre-stream test that includes audio and video movement similar to the planned broadcast. A static screen may not reveal the same problems as a fast-moving game. Check that the test reaches YouTube, inspect its stream-health messages, and compare the incoming bitrate in Switchboard with the encoder’s configured output.

During the broadcast
Watch YouTube’s Live Control Room for destination-side health indicators and messages. Separately, use Switchboard’s workflow page to see the incoming bitrate and FPS from the source encoder. These views report different parts of the path: Switchboard shows the feed arriving from the encoder, while YouTube reports the destination stream’s health.
YouTube’s guidance is to “monitor the stream health and review messages” during the event. If you need to change settings in an active broadcast, consult the documentation for your particular encoder: the reviewed official guidance does not establish one universal method for changing bitrate live across encoders.

Troubleshoot if lowering bitrate does not help
- The incoming rate in Switchboard is still high: verify that you changed the streaming output bitrate in the encoder actually sending the feed, rather than only changing a different profile or recording setting.
- YouTube still reports poor health: use YouTube’s messages to identify the destination-side issue, then check that the codec, resolution and frame rate match the bitrate you selected. A lower bitrate alone is not a universal fix.
- The stream remains unstable at a lower rate: test with a lower resolution or frame rate if acceptable, and retest under conditions similar to the planned broadcast. Choose a rate your upload connection can sustain reliably.
- You are sending to multiple destinations: Switchboard’s OBS guide says encoder settings depend on upload speed and destinations, but the reviewed documentation does not establish how a single source feed is transformed separately for every destination. Do not assume one bitrate change affects every destination identically.
- You cannot find the control: in OBS, confirm Output Mode is Advanced and use the streaming output section. For a different encoder, refer to that encoder’s specific settings guide rather than looking for a control in Switchboard’s monitoring view.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded gaming video live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live encoder. Start the free first day.
