1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor YouTube Live at 4K and 60 fps, set OBS’s streaming keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds; the 4K resolution and 60 fps do not require a different interval. YouTube’s live encoder settings are the authority for that recommendation.
Set OBS’s keyframe interval to 2 seconds
- In OBS, open Settings → Output.
- If needed, change Output Mode to Advanced to access streaming encoder controls.
- In the streaming settings for your selected encoder, set Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds, if the field is available.
- Apply the change, then test the stream and check YouTube’s stream health before relying on it for an event.
OBS’s controls vary by release and encoder, so the field may not look identical in every setup. OBS documents keyframe interval as an advanced encoder setting; its example value of 2 in the advanced guide is a recording example, not a separate YouTube streaming preset. See the OBS Advanced Recording Settings Guide.
Why YouTube recommends 2 seconds
A keyframe is a complete reference frame from which a decoder can reconstruct following frames. Regular keyframes help the live-video pipeline process and recover the stream. YouTube’s recommendation is 2 seconds, with a maximum interval of 4 seconds. These are YouTube’s live encoder settings, not a special rule limited to OBS or to 4K60.
Choosing 4 seconds is within YouTube’s stated maximum, but it is not the recommended setting. For a straightforward YouTube Live configuration, use 2 seconds.

Recommended 4K60 bitrate and encoder settings
Keyframe interval is only one part of a reliable 4K60 stream. YouTube lists different bitrate recommendations by codec, and those figures are ingest settings—not a promise that a particular internet connection, encoder, or viewing device will deliver clean video.
| Codec | YouTube’s 4K60 minimum bitrate | YouTube’s 4K60 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These codec-specific figures are from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings table; the page does not state a publication year. YouTube also lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, supports up to 60 fps, and recommends RTMPS. Use a bitrate your upload connection can sustain steadily, with capacity left for other network traffic.

Choose a resolution and frame rate your setup can sustain
Set OBS’s output resolution to 3840×2160 and frame rate to 60 fps only if your source, encoder, and connection can all handle that workload. OBS exposes output resolution and common frame-rate options in its Video settings; see the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Pick an encoder based on your hardware
Software encoding and supported hardware encoding are both options; the right choice depends on your system and whether it can encode the chosen resolution, frame rate, and bitrate without dropped frames. Hardware encoding shifts work off the CPU, but that does not by itself mean you need to upgrade. OBS explains the distinction in its Hardware Encoding guide.

Set up YouTube ingestion and latency expectations
YouTube automatically detects encoder settings by default. A custom stream key lets you select a resolution manually in Live Control Room, but manual selection is not required for every stream. Follow the options shown for your channel and encoder in YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
For 4K/2160p streams, YouTube says the low-latency optimization option is unavailable and the stream is set to normal latency. If minimizing delay is essential, account for that before choosing 4K.

A capture card is relevant only if your setup needs to bring video from external hardware, such as a camera or console, into the encoder. It is not needed to change OBS’s keyframe interval.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test before you go live
- Run an upload speed test and confirm your connection has stable headroom above the stream’s video bitrate for other network activity.
- Make a private or otherwise suitable test stream with representative movement and audio. Fast gameplay, camera movement, and complex scenes can stress the encoder and connection more than a static screen.
- Check YouTube’s stream health during the test and watch OBS for encoder overload, dropped frames, or other warnings.
- Adjust the settings or reduce the workload if the test is unstable; repeat the test before the real broadcast.
YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and video motion and monitoring stream health. OBS likewise recommends testing settings before a real stream. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance and the OBS overview.

Troubleshooting common 4K60 keyframe and stream problems
The keyframe interval control is missing
- Confirm you are in Settings → Output and have selected Advanced output mode if the streaming tab needs it.
- Check the selected streaming encoder’s controls. OBS releases and encoders can expose different fields; do not assume every encoder has an identical control.
- If the encoder manages the interval without a visible field, consult its available settings and verify the resulting stream with YouTube’s health indicators.
YouTube stream health reports instability
- Check whether the connection can sustain the selected bitrate continuously, not merely reach it in a speed test.
- Look for competing network traffic and encoder overload. Test again with the same movement and audio expected during the broadcast.
- Use YouTube’s codec-specific bitrate recommendation as a starting point; the listed minimum is not a guarantee of reliable delivery.
The stream is not as sharp or smooth as expected
- Verify that the source is actually 4K60 and that OBS’s output resolution and frame rate match the intended broadcast.
- Check the selected codec and bitrate against YouTube’s 4K60 recommendations.
- Monitor encoder and stream health during a representative test; a nominal 4K60 setting cannot overcome a source, system, or connection that cannot sustain it.
There is more delay than expected
At 4K/2160p, YouTube sets the stream to normal latency rather than offering its low-latency optimization. The keyframe interval does not override that platform limitation.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep pre-recorded video looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is an alternative to running OBS on a home computer: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops from the cloud, supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live setup.
