The only reliable way to know what your 24/7 YouTube stream costs to run is to measure the complete setup’s electricity use at the wall, then apply your household’s current tariff. Reduce unnecessary workload and equipment, measure again, and check that stream quality and uptime remain acceptable. There is no dependable all-India rupee estimate: power draw and residential billing rates vary.
Calculate your stream’s monthly electricity cost
Measure the PC and everything needed to keep the stream running, rather than estimating from a power supply’s rating or a graphics card’s advertised power. Use a plug-in electricity meter that records accumulated kilowatt-hours (kWh), provided the meter is correctly rated for the equipment and connection. For equipment that cannot safely be measured through a plug-in meter, use an appropriate whole-circuit measurement method or consult a qualified electrician.
- Include the whole setup. Measure the PC, any monitor that stays on, capture equipment, audio gear, and other devices on the same measured connection. If a device is not included in the measurement, account for it separately.
- Measure during representative streaming. Record kWh over a period that captures normal variation in your stream workload. A brief idle reading may not reflect a game, animated scene, or other content that runs alongside the stream.
- Apply the applicable energy rate. Multiply measured kWh by the relevant marginal ₹/kWh from your bill or current tariff schedule. If estimating from average power instead, calculate: average kW × operating hours × applicable ₹/kWh.
- Use the right number of hours. A 30-day month running continuously is 720 hours (24 × 30); a 31-day month is 744 hours. Use your actual operating period for a partial month.
This estimates the energy-charge portion, not necessarily the full bill. Check the bill for the domestic category, slab, fixed charges, fuel or power purchase adjustments, duty, and any subsidy. A reduction in kWh may lower the energy component without changing fixed charges.
Why there is no single Indian rate to use
The Ministry of Power says state electricity regulatory commissions determine retail tariffs, and state governments may provide subsidies to domestic consumers (Ministry of Power release, 10 August 2026). Use the current schedule for your state, DISCOM, and consumer category rather than treating a national figure as your household’s rate.

The Central Electricity Authority’s Electricity Tariff & Duty and Average rates of electricity supply in India is a 2025 compilation. Its surfaced Bihar domestic schedules are effective 1 April 2024 and distinguish categories and billing structures; they illustrate variation, not a current all-India household price (CEA tariff compilation). Your latest bill and applicable current tariff schedule are the better inputs for your estimate.
Reduce power use without stopping the stream
Change one thing at a time, then measure whole-system kWh again under comparable streaming conditions. Keep a record of the stream’s visual quality and stability as well as energy use; a lower reading is not useful if the stream no longer meets your needs.

1. Measure before buying upgrades
A plug-in kWh meter is a measurement tool, not an energy-saving device. Do not infer actual wall consumption from the PC’s power supply unit (PSU) capacity, a component’s thermal design power (TDP), or marketing figures. Establish a measured baseline before considering replacement hardware.
2. Reduce work the stream does not need
If the PC is also rendering a game, video, or animated scene, test a less demanding scene, frame rate, or resolution that still suits your content. Check both the stream output and its stability after each change. The right setting depends on the content and hardware; there is no universal reduction that is suitable for every channel.

3. Compare encoder options on your PC
Test an available hardware encoder if it delivers the quality and stability you need. Hardware encoding is not guaranteed to reduce electricity use: the GPU’s overall draw, encoder implementation, and workload all matter. Compare measured whole-system kWh before and after switching encoder paths rather than assuming the result.
4. Turn off equipment you do not need
Switch off unnecessary displays, lights, and peripherals. If a monitor is needed only for setup or occasional monitoring, test whether it can be turned off after the stream is stable. Avoid sleep or hibernation settings that suspend the PC or interrupt the stream.

5. Consider replacement only after you know the baseline
A lower-power PC, GPU, or PSU could reduce draw in some configurations, but the result depends on the streaming workload and system efficiency. Compare measured consumption, required encoding capability, and upfront cost before replacing anything. A PSU’s rated capacity describes its maximum capability, not the PC’s constant power use.

For any proposed change, compare the measured kWh difference, stream quality and reliability, upfront cost, and the applicable marginal tariff. Do not assume that a change will pay for itself without using your own measurements and billing details. The exact domestic rate and subsidy depend on your location and consumer category; verify them against your current bill and tariff schedule.
