First check whether Switchboard Live is receiving video from your encoder. In the selected workflow, look at the confidence monitor and connection status: no preview activity and a status other than “Encoder Connected” means the feed is not reaching Switchboard. If the preview is active, verify that your encoder uses that workflow’s current Stream URL and Stream Key, then compare its output settings with Switchboard’s recommendations. Reset a YouTube stream key only when YouTube Live Control Room reports an encoder-start error; that is a separate issue from a failed encoder-to-Switchboard connection.
Find which connection is failing
A Switchboard workflow receives an ingest feed from your encoder, then forwards the stream to the selected destination, such as YouTube. The same broad description of “invalid” settings can refer to different stages, and it does not identify one universal cause.
- Encoder to Switchboard: Check the workflow’s confidence monitor and status. Switchboard says that if the monitor shows no activity and the status does not read “Encoder Connected,” it is not receiving video and cannot send it to destinations. Switchboard’s Workflow Page.
- Switchboard to YouTube: If the workflow preview is active but YouTube Live Control Room reports an encoder-start error, use YouTube’s stream-key guidance below. A working Switchboard preview does not by itself prove that YouTube has accepted the stream.

Check the workflow preview and status
Open the relevant workflow in Switchboard and inspect its confidence monitor and status. If there is no activity and it is not “Encoder Connected,” troubleshoot the encoder’s connection to Switchboard before changing YouTube settings. If the preview is active, continue to verify the workflow details and output configuration.

Confirm the encoder’s Stream URL and Stream Key
In Switchboard, open the workflow you intend to use and copy its Stream URL and Stream Key into your encoder. Each workflow has its own RTMP information, so ensure the encoder is using the current values for the selected workflow—not details from another workflow. Switchboard’s initial setup instructions describe copying those values into streaming software.

Compare the encoder output with Switchboard’s baseline
Check the encoder’s actual output settings against the values in the next section. Switchboard publishes minimum settings and separately recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and 30 or 60 fps in its initial-setup guidance. These are Switchboard’s published recommendations, not a complete specification for every YouTube resolution.

Update the YouTube key only for a YouTube encoder-start error
If YouTube Live Control Room specifically reports an encoder-start error, YouTube’s recommended remedy is to get a new stream key there and update the encoder with it. This step applies to that YouTube-reported error; it is not a diagnosis or universal fix for every message described as invalid settings. See YouTube’s guidance for encoder-start errors.

Retest at the stage that showed the error
After correcting a setting or workflow detail, check the Switchboard preview and status for incoming video. If Switchboard is connected but the error appears in YouTube Live Control Room, check YouTube there. Record which screen reports the error and what the workflow status shows; those observations distinguish the two connection stages.

Switchboard’s initial-setup guidance also recommends a two-second keyframe interval and 30 or 60 fps. Its minimum-settings article notes that Facebook and YouTube support 1080p (1920 × 1080), but these cross-platform minimums should not be treated as YouTube’s complete requirements for every resolution. If you are targeting a particular YouTube resolution, check YouTube’s current guidance for that output rather than assuming the Switchboard baseline covers every setting.
Common cases and what to do
- No preview activity; status is not “Encoder Connected”: Switchboard is not receiving video. Verify the encoder’s connection to the intended workflow and its current Stream URL and Stream Key.
- Preview is active, but the encoder reports a settings error: Compare the encoder’s output against Switchboard’s baseline, including H.264 Main profile, CBR, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval. The exact message alone does not establish which value is at fault.
- Switchboard shows an incoming feed, but YouTube reports an encoder-start error: Follow YouTube’s specific instruction to obtain a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- The error remains after checking settings and credentials: Note the exact screen and wording, the workflow status, whether its preview is active, and the encoder settings you have verified. The cited documentation does not map the exact wording “encoder settings are invalid” to a single setting, so those details are needed to identify the failing stage.
