You can switch between prerecorded game VODs without ending a YouTube livestream: keep the same YouTube broadcast running and change the video being sent by your encoder. YouTube treats the incoming stream and the viewer-facing broadcast as separate resources, so changing the encoder’s output does not by itself create a new broadcast. The exact playlist and source-switch controls depend on the encoder you use.
How the switch works
Your encoder sends video and audio to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key. The broadcast is the distinct YouTube video viewers watch; it is bound to an incoming stream. Keep that broadcast active while the encoder changes which VOD it sends. YouTube explains this distinction in its Live Streaming API guide to broadcasts and streams.
This is an encoder-side production change, not a YouTube player command. YouTube’s encoder guidance includes broadcasting gameplay and lists software encoders such as OBS, but does not prescribe a particular VOD playlist interface or button sequence. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Set up a continuous VOD feed
- Choose an encoder. Use software or a cloud encoding service that can send a continuous feed to YouTube and handle your prerecorded files in the way you need. Check that it supports ordered playback or a practical way to change sources; features and controls vary by encoder and version. YouTube lists examples, not endorsements or a guarantee that every option supports scheduled VOD playlists.
- Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, choose the stream or event you intend to use and copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s connection settings. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your channel. YouTube explains stream keys and URLs in Manage live stream settings.
- Load and order the VODs in the encoder. Add the game recordings as media or video sources, or use the encoder’s playlist feature if it has one. Arrange the files in the order you want viewers to see them. The exact steps are specific to that encoder; YouTube’s setup instructions do not define a universal playlist workflow.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Confirm that the intended VOD appears in Live Control Room, listen for clean audio, and verify that the correct event is accessible from your channel or its watch page before treating it as live.
- Keep the broadcast running as you advance or switch sources. Use the encoder’s playlist advance or source-selection control. A brief slate or transition scene between files is optional production advice; it is not a YouTube feature. Confirm the next VOD’s picture and audio are correct.
- Record locally and monitor the recording. Keep a local archive as a backup and check that it is growing. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality and verifying local recording in its live streaming tips.
Keep long-running streams practical
Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour threshold
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. For an archive you can depend on, plan sessions shorter than 12 hours and preserve your own local recording. Details are in Archive live streams.

Do not promise unlimited rewind
For streams longer than 12 hours, YouTube DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. If viewer rewind matters, use shorter sessions rather than assuming an all-day broadcast will remain fully rewindable. See Turn on DVR on live streams.
Check rights and channel rules
Livestreams must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service; start with Get started with live streaming. Whether you may rebroadcast a particular game recording, its soundtrack, or another creator’s VOD depends on the relevant rights and permissions. A recording being available to watch does not establish permission to retransmit it live.

Choose a workflow that fits your operation
| Workflow | What to evaluate | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Local software encoder | Playlist or source-switch support, transitions, local recording, operating-system compatibility, and monitoring requirements. | You control the files and outgoing feed locally, but the computer and connection must remain available for the stream. |
| Cloud or managed encoder | Whether prerecorded-file scheduling is supported, automation, recovery, setup complexity, and cost. | It can move encoding off your computer, but capabilities vary; YouTube’s encoder list does not establish that every service can schedule game VOD playlists. |
YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to get started. A capture card or other hardware is only relevant if your particular inputs or production setup need it; it is not inherently required to switch between prerecorded files.
Troubleshoot common switching problems
- The live broadcast ends when a VOD changes: Check whether the encoder is stopping its output or ending the event instead of advancing its playlist or switching its active source. The intended workflow keeps the encoder feed and YouTube broadcast running.
- The preview is black or shows the wrong VOD: Check the active source, file path, and playlist order in the encoder. Then confirm the incoming picture in Live Control Room before relying on the change.
- Viewers hear silence or the wrong audio: Check the selected file’s audio and the encoder’s active audio source or mix when switching. Monitor the preview and stream audio after each change.
- The encoder cannot connect or send to the event: Verify that it has the correct stream URL and stream key for the selected YouTube stream. Keep the key private and replace it if it has been exposed.
- The archive is missing or rewind is limited: Check whether the session exceeded 12 hours. YouTube may not capture streams longer than that, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable.
