Use the Keeper’s Shrines below as route anchors, and check your Journal portraits against the names—not just the word “Chief” in a boss’s name. Some entries are optional, hidden, or gated by progress. The routes below follow secondary guides; the in-game portrait list is the practical completion check.
What counts as a Yaoguai Chief?
This guide follows the Journal category, not every boss players might casually call a chief. PowerPyx’s numbered journal guide lists 55 Yaoguai Chief portraits, while its separate all-boss guide says Macaque Chief does not register in that category. Boss order can also vary with the route you take. Compare the portrait names in your Journal rather than treating another guide’s fight order as definitive.
The locations and shrine names below are drawn chiefly from PowerPyx’s journal portrait and location guide, with chapter and location cross-checking from Raider King’s boss locations list. These are guide routes, not official maps.
Chapter 1: Black Wind Mountain
Bullguard
At the Forest of Wolves, follow the route from the Front Hills Keeper’s Shrine toward the open area with the large axe-wielding enemy. Defeat Bullguard to register the portrait.

Guangzhi
From the Outside the Forest shrine in the Forest of Wolves, take the path into the woods and look for a side route leading to a small arena. Guangzhi is an optional early encounter.
Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang
At Bamboo Grove, travel from the Snake Trail shrine down toward the stream and search the waterway for the frog boss.
Guangmou
From the Snake Trail shrine in Bamboo Grove, cross the bridge and continue through the wooded route to the clearing where Guangmou waits.
Chapter 2: Yellow Wind Ridge
Lang-Li-Guhh-Baw
In Sandgate Village, use the Village Entrance shrine and explore the waterlogged area for this frog boss.

Search the village area near the Village Entrance shrine. The Earth Wolf is in the open ground among the village buildings.
King and Second Prince of Flowing Sands
At the Valley of Despair shrine in Sandgate Village, proceed through the story route into the arena. The fight includes both the Second Prince and the King; the order and outcome of the encounter can depend on what happens during the fight.
First Prince of Flowing Sands
Continue through the Valley of Despair area after the King and Second Prince encounter. The First Prince is found farther along the route in the large cavern.
Tiger’s Acolyte
Use the Windrest Bridge shrine in Fright Cliff and follow the bridge-and-village route. The Tiger’s Acolyte stands on the path ahead.

Gore-Eye Daoist
From the Cellar shrine in Crouching Tiger Temple, follow the route into the nearby open area to find the Gore-Eye Daoist.
Mother of Stones
In Fright Cliff, start at the Squall Hideout shrine and search the nearby cave for the Mother of Stones. This encounter is off the main route.
Mad Tiger
The Mad Tiger is tied to the Old-Rattle Drum quest item and its related interactions in Sandgate Village. If you have the drum, use it at the required locations in the village and follow the resulting route to the well; the boss is below. The encounter is therefore easy to overlook if you do not pursue the item’s clues.

Secret Tiger Vanguard
The secret Tiger Vanguard is in the Kingdom of Sahali, reached through the Drunken Boar side quest. Complete that quest’s steps to open the secret area, then follow the route to the arena.

Chapter 3 includes several captains and other optional encounters. Some names in general boss lists refer to story appearances or grouped fights, so use the Journal portrait name to determine whether an entry is still missing.
Captain Lotus-Vision
At the Pagoda Realm’s Outside the Wheel shrine, explore the nearby prison area for Captain Lotus-Vision.
Apramana Bat
In the Bitter Lake area, follow the route from the North Shore of the Bitter Lake shrine along the shore. The boss is found on the beach route.
Non-White
Non-White is encountered on the story path through the Valley of Ecstasy. Continue from the Forest of Felicity shrine along the main route.
Lang-Li-Guhh-Lang
Search the Valley of Ecstasy’s waterways for this frog boss, using the Brook of Bliss shrine as the nearby route anchor.
Old Ginseng Guai
From the Tower of Karma shrine in the Valley of Ecstasy, look for the nearby ginseng patch and interact with it to trigger the encounter.
Non-Able
Non-Able is near the Longevity Road shrine in the Valley of Ecstasy. Follow the route into the open area beyond the shrine.
Captain Void-Illusion
In the New Thunderclap Temple, take the route from the Mahavira Hall shrine into the nearby temple grounds to find the captain’s remains and complete the encounter’s required interaction.
Captain Kalpa-Wave
Follow the story route through the New Thunderclap Temple from the Temple Entrance shrine. Captain Kalpa-Wave appears along the approach to the temple.
Non-Pure
Look for Non-Pure inside the New Thunderclap Temple, using the Temple Entrance shrine to orient your route through the buildings.

Non-Void
Non-Void is associated with the Fox quest in the Pagoda Realm. Carry the fox form obtained through the quest and follow its progression to the encounter.
Monk from the Sea
From the Brook of Bliss shrine in the Valley of Ecstasy, search the nearby snowy route for the Monk from the Sea.
Chapter 4: The Webbed Hollow
The Second Sister
The Second Sister is on the main route through the Village of Lanxi. Continue from the Estate of the Zhu shrine into the courtyard encounter.
Elder Amourworm
In the Webbed Hollow, reach the Lower Hollow shrine and search the nearby web-covered area for Elder Amourworm. Its quest-related use of an item makes this more than a simple detour: keep the item and interaction in mind if you are pursuing the related reward.
Venom Daoist encounters
The Venom Daoist is fought in two encounters. The first is reached from the Pool of Shattered Jade shrine in the Webbed Hollow; the later encounter is in the Temple of Yellow Flowers area, reached from the Court of Illumination shrine. Complete the first encounter and follow the story progression to reach the second. Do not confuse the pair of encounters with two separate Yaoguai Chief portrait names unless the Journal shows separate entries.
Centipede Guai
From the Middle Hollow shrine, continue through the Webbed Hollow’s cavern route to the large arena where Centipede Guai appears.
Buddha’s Right Hand
Proceed through the Webbed Hollow story route from the Cliff of Oblivion shrine. Buddha’s Right Hand is encountered along the main path.
Baw-Li-Guhh-Baw
Search the Webbed Hollow near the Bonevault shrine for this frog boss, following the side route from the shrine into the lower area.
Commander Beetle
In the Purple Cloud Mountain secret area, use the Valley of Blooms shrine and follow the route to the arena. Access to the area depends on progressing the Venom Daoist encounters.
Fungiwoman
Fungiwoman is found in the Temple of Yellow Flowers area, near the Court of Illumination shrine. Follow the side path and interact with the relevant fungus to trigger the fight.
Chapter 5: Flaming Mountains
Brown-Iron Cart
At the Ashen Pass I shrine in the Woods of Ember, follow the main route to the cart blocking the way.

Gray-Bronze Cart
Continue through the Woods of Ember from the Ashen Pass II shrine. The Gray-Bronze Cart is on the route forward.
Crimson-Silver Cart
In the Field of Fire, travel from the Fallen Furnace Crater shrine along the main route to the cart encounter.
Father of Stones
Search the Field of Fire near the Ashen Pass III shrine for the Father of Stones. The encounter is off the direct cart route.

Fast As Wind and Quick As Fire
These two enemies are fought together in the Field of Fire. Follow the main progression from the Fallen Furnace Crater shrine to their arena; the journal roster may present grouped encounters differently from a list of individual combatants.
Flint Chief
From the Ashen Pass III shrine, explore the nearby rocky ground for the Flint Chief.
Cloudy Mist and Misty Cloud
The paired encounter is inside the Furnace Valley route. Use the Emerald Hall shrine as the anchor and continue through the halls to the fight.
Nine-Capped Lingzhi Guai
In the Field of Fire, find the lingzhi patch near the Ashen Pass III shrine and interact with it to reveal the boss.

Look for this frog boss in the Furnace Valley area, using the Valley Entrance shrine to reach the nearby water and side route.
Top Takes Bottom, Bottom Takes Top
In the Bishui Cave secret area, follow the cave route from the Purge Pit shrine to the encounter. Unlocking the area requires completing the relevant Chapter 5 cart quest progression.

Chapter 6 is less linear than earlier chapters. Once cloud travel is unlocked, use the named shrines as anchors and search the upper plateau, lake, and swamp areas separately. Ordinary enemies can resemble some bosses here, so confirm the boss portrait and name in your Journal.
Poison Chief
At the Foothills’ Verdant Path shrine, fly toward the upper plateau and look near a small pond before descending toward the large lake.

Son of Stones
From Verdant Path, unlock cloud travel and fly past the lake toward the cliffs to reach Son of Stones.
Water-Wood Beast
Search the lower lake area from the Verdant Path side. The boss is distinct from the ordinary green hippo-like enemies in the water.
Jiao-Loong of Waves
At Verdant Path, approach the pool below the cliffs to trigger the boss from the water. The location guide’s roster labels for some Chapter 6 entries are not fully consistent, so use the in-game portrait name when checking this encounter.
Lang-Baw-Baw
After unlocking cloud travel, search a corner of the lower lake near Verdant Path for Lang-Baw-Baw.

Gold Armored Rhino
Follow story progression to the Rhino Watch Slope shrine. Cloud travel leads to the arena.
Cloudtreading Deer
From the Deer Sight Forest shrine, fly across the lake toward the red trees to find the Cloudtreading Deer.
Feng-Tail General
At the Mantis-Catching Swamp shrine, look for the giant insect-like creature in the swamp. This is a traversal challenge rather than a conventional boss fight: the guide describes holding its feelers while meeting stamina, health, and burn-resistance demands.
Emerald-Armed Mantis
Search around Mantis-Catching Swamp after collecting the other three Chapter 6 mythical armor pieces. If the Emerald-Armed Mantis does not appear before then, return after obtaining them and approach the encounter area.

How to tell which Chief is missing

Open the Journal and check the Yaoguai Chiefs portrait category rather than relying on a general all-boss list.

Compare your empty or undiscovered portraits with the chapter names above. Guide ordering can differ from your playthrough, and combined fights may be grouped differently across lists.

For optional entries, verify the trigger as well as the nearest shrine: quest items, secret-area access, interactions, and Chapter 6 progression can all control whether a boss appears.

Use the portrait name as the final check. A name containing “Chief,” including Macaque Chief, does not by itself establish that the fight belongs to the Yaoguai Chiefs journal category.
