You can loop authorized media with FFmpeg on Debian and send it to YouTube, but a looping command alone does not guarantee a continuous broadcast. You also need an eligible YouTube channel, a working RTMPS stream key, compatible encoding settings, enough upload capacity, and a plan for failures. This guide walks through the self-hosted setup and the checks that matter before relying on it.
What you need before you start
- A Debian computer or server that can run FFmpeg and stay powered on, with a reliable internet connection.
- Video or audio files and artwork you have permission to stream.
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming and an encoder event in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Sufficient sustained upload bandwidth for your selected stream bitrate, plus headroom.
There is no established minimum CPU, memory, or Debian machine specification for this workflow. The required capacity depends on your source files and output settings. If FFmpeg must encode video, test the actual workload on the intended host; processing compatible existing media can require different resources from a full transcode.
1. Confirm YouTube Live access and create an event
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take at least 24 hours, so do not leave it until launch day. Check the channel’s eligibility and activation status in YouTube Studio before preparing a broadcast.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream for the broadcast.
- Record the RTMPS server URL and the stream key shown for that event. Use the key associated with the event you intend to stream to.
Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put a real key in a public configuration file, shared shell history, screenshot, or log. Use a placeholder in scripts and examples; if a key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.

2. Install FFmpeg and inspect your media
Install FFmpeg from the Debian package repository for your chosen Debian release, then inspect the input files to determine their video and audio streams, codecs, frame rate, and dimensions. The exact package command can vary by release and configured repositories; use the package manager and repository appropriate to your Debian installation.
Only use music, recordings, and artwork that you have appropriate rights to stream. Owning a file or finding it online does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it. Check the relevant rights for the recording and composition, as well as the terms that apply to your YouTube use.
3. Loop a media file with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option repeats an input indefinitely. The -re input option reads a file at its native rate, rather than sending it as fast as the machine can process it. Put both options before the input’s -i.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/authorized-media.mp4 [output options] [RTMPS destination]This is a command shape, not a complete copy-and-run broadcast command: the output options must specify appropriate stream mapping, codecs, filters if needed, bitrate, and the RTMPS destination format for your FFmpeg build and YouTube event. Do not paste your real key into a command that may be retained in shell history. Protect the key using a method appropriate to your environment.

A single-file loop repeats that file; it is not a scheduled playlist and does not promise gap-free transitions at the loop boundary. Listen and watch through a full cycle, including the join, before depending on it.
4. Choose compatible encoding settings and bitrate
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS, with AAC or MP3 audio. For a straightforward SDR setup, H.264 video and AAC audio are a practical starting point. Use constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and do not let the interval exceed four seconds. YouTube allows frame rates up to 60 fps. Match resolution and frame rate to your content and to a bitrate recommendation for that codec and output.

For H.264, YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not independent test results or guarantees. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings for the complete codec-, resolution-, and frame-rate-specific recommendations: YouTube encoder settings.
Higher selected bitrate requires more sustained upload capacity. YouTube recommends upload headroom of 20% above the total stream bitrate. For example, calculate headroom from the total audio-plus-video stream bitrate you plan to send; if you send more than one feed, include all feeds in the total. YouTube Help says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” A speed test is a useful check, but test the actual connection under expected operating conditions before launch. 5. Test the broadcast before leaving it unattended
- Run FFmpeg with the intended file, output codecs, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
- Open the event preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that both audio and video arrive and that the correct event is receiving the stream.
- Check the stream health indicators and messages, and verify that the event is reachable as expected.
- Measure upload capacity and confirm you have the recommended headroom for the total bitrate. Test for long enough to catch network instability and inspect the file loop boundary.
- Review FFmpeg output and host behavior during the test. If you change encoding settings or media, repeat the checks.
Do not interpret a successful short test as proof of indefinite operation. A continuous broadcast depends on the FFmpeg process, host, power, network, credentials, and YouTube ingest all continuing to work.

6. Plan for restarts, failures, and archiving
A process manager with a restart policy can restart FFmpeg after some process failures, but that does not fix an expired or revoked key, a failed host, loss of power or network, or a YouTube ingest problem. Operational resilience also means retaining useful logs, setting up alerting, planning for host and network failures, and checking the stream after a reconnect. No uptime percentage or recovery time is established for this Debian setup.
YouTube’s encoder workflow documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will become one complete archive. Debian host or VPS?
A Debian machine at home gives you direct control of the host, while a VPS is a category-level option if you prefer the encoder to run remotely. Neither choice removes the need to test the actual encode, protect the stream key, maintain a reliable network path, and monitor the YouTube event. No particular VPS provider or machine has been established as necessary or endorsed for this setup.
