There is no universal winner: compare a PC’s measured electricity and any added internet or hardware costs with a VPS’s monthly fee, outbound-transfer limits, and overages. The right answer depends on your PC’s actual power draw, local electricity tariff, stream bitrate, and a VPS quote that can handle your ticker workload.
Calculate the PC’s monthly electricity cost
Use the PC’s draw at the wall while the ticker is running, not a generic estimate for “a computer.” For a 30-day month:
Monthly electricity cost = (measured watts ÷ 1,000) × 720 hours × local price per kWh.
For example, 80 W at $0.20/kWh works out to 0.08 kW × 720 × $0.20 = $11.52 for 30 days. This is an illustrative calculation, not a typical-PC estimate. Substitute your measured draw and all-in local tariff; for a month that is not 30 days, use its actual hours.

If the PC would be on anyway, measure or estimate the ticker’s added consumption where practical. Charging the stream for the computer’s full baseline draw can overstate its incremental cost. A plug-in electricity monitor can help you measure wall draw, but it is not required if you can obtain a reliable measurement another way.
Estimate the VPS’s outbound data before choosing a plan
The VPS sends the encoded stream to YouTube. Estimate its monthly outbound data as:

Bitrate in megabits per second ÷ 8 × seconds streamed
Then convert the result to the provider’s GB or GiB convention and allow for protocol and container overhead. At a constant 3 Mb/s for 30 days, the calculation is 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375 MB/s; over 720 hours that is roughly 972 GB in decimal units before overhead. This is an estimate from the stated bitrate and uptime, not a measured stream. Audience playback is delivered by YouTube; this estimate is for the encoder’s feed to YouTube, not viewers’ total traffic.

DigitalOcean’s official Droplet pricing page lists Basic tiers of $4/month with 500 GiB transfer, $6/month with 1,000 GiB, and $12/month with 2,000 GiB. These are DigitalOcean plan prices, not a general VPS market range or proof that any tier can encode your stream. A 3 Mb/s feed’s rough decimal estimate is already near or above the smallest allowance, so check how the provider counts transfer, what overages cost, and leave headroom. DigitalOcean states that its Droplets are VPS instances whose operating system, applications, and data are managed by the customer. Its pricing page notes per-second billing effective January 1, 2026; pricing and terms can change.
Compare the costs and responsibilities

A VPS can cost less than keeping a desktop on continuously in a high-tariff home, but a low-cost instance may not have enough CPU or suitable graphics acceleration for real-time encoding. A looped pre-rendered or low-motion ticker feed may need less compute than a live-rendered composition with graphics. Validate the actual workload before paying for a larger instance. DigitalOcean describes its CPU-Optimized Droplets as dedicated-CPU configurations for workloads demanding consistent compute, including media streaming; that description alone does not establish that your ticker needs one.

Build a like-for-like monthly estimate
- Measure the PC: Record wall draw while the ticker runs. If you want only the stream’s incremental cost, compare the same PC idle and ticker-running states where practical.
- Calculate electricity: Multiply watts ÷ 1,000 by 720 and your local price per kWh for a 30-day estimate. Use actual hours for a different month.
- Estimate transfer: Calculate outbound data from target bitrate and uptime, then add overhead and headroom. Check the VPS provider’s GB/GiB accounting and overage rules.
- Get a workload-appropriate VPS quote: Check CPU, memory, storage, operating-system and software compatibility, transfer, billing terms, and applicable taxes. Add backups or other services only if you plan to use them.
- Compare bills and operational effort separately: Total the monthly cash expenses, then account for setup, maintenance, outage response, and the value of having the PC unavailable for other use.
Include YouTube’s live and archive behavior in the plan
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions tell creators to configure the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in their encoder. Keep the key private and use the encoder’s configured YouTube endpoint when you set up either a home PC or a VPS.
The same YouTube Help page says: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” If you need archived segments from a broadcast intended to run indefinitely, plan an explicit restart and archive strategy. This documentation does not establish that a single multi-day broadcast will produce a complete archive.
