Best Low-Cost VPS for a 24/7 YouTube Internet Radio Stream

A low-cost VPS can run a 24/7 YouTube radio stream, but transfer allowance matters as much as the monthly price. Compare published plans, estimate bandwidth, and choose between a simple FFmpeg loop and OBS.

For a self-managed, audio-led 24/7 YouTube radio stream, start with a small Linux VPS running FFmpeg and choose it by included outbound transfer—not just its advertised monthly price. StreamNeo is the first option to consider if you would rather avoid maintaining a server: it keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free.

A VPS can be a low-cost fit for a simple radio feed paired with a static image or pre-rendered visual loop. It is not a universal “best VPS” decision: transfer allowance, stream complexity, region, tax and IPv4 charges, and your willingness to administer Linux all affect the real cost. The provider figures below are advertised listings, not independently tested performance results.

Which VPS is a sensible starting point?

For one stream with fixed visuals, shortlist Linux VPS plans that provide enough monthly outbound transfer for your video bitrate, then verify the full checkout cost and test your actual stream. FFmpeg is generally a better fit than a desktop OBS setup when the job is simply combining a radio feed with a static image or loop; that workload distinction does not guarantee performance on any particular VPS.

StreamNeo is the alternative to try first if you do not want a VPS to maintain: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Its cloud service loops uploaded video to YouTube, supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and gives a first day free.

Published VPS examples

Hostinap’s provider page, accessed in 2026, lists the following plans. These are provider-advertised specifications; no independent test establishes their uptime, CPU consistency, or performance for YouTube streaming. Confirm current availability, price, taxes, and terms at checkout.

Plan Listed price Listed resources and transfer What to check
Hostinap USVPS1, United States $5/month 2 vCPU, 3 GB ECC RAM, 10 GB SSD, 3 TB transfer, 1 Gbit port Verify price and transfer terms at checkout; a 3 TB allowance may suit one modest-bitrate stream, depending on actual bitrate and overhead.
Hostinap EUVPS1, Germany $12/month 1 vCPU, 4 GB ECC RAM, 60 GB NVMe, unmetered traffic, 1 Gbit port Confirm what “unmetered” means under the current plan terms and whether the region suits your audience and route to YouTube.

StreamNeo’s July 2026 comparison reported DigitalOcean’s $4 plan with 500 GiB transfer, its $12 plan with 2,000 GiB, an Amazon Lightsail $7 Linux bundle with 2 TB, and Hetzner CX23 at €5.49/month in Germany or Finland, excluding IPv4 and VAT after a June 2026 price adjustment. Those are dated secondary-source figures, not current verified provider quotes. Check each provider’s own pricing and transfer, tax, and IPv4 rules before choosing.

Calculate bandwidth before comparing prices

Outbound transfer is the most predictable recurring constraint for an always-on stream. Using YouTube’s recommended H.264 rates as examples, uninterrupted video at 6 Mbps for 30 days transfers approximately 1.94 TB decimal before protocol overhead; at 10 Mbps it is approximately 3.24 TB. These are calculations, not YouTube-published monthly transfer figures. A plan with an attractive sticker price but a 500 GiB allowance may therefore be unsuitable for a continuous video stream.

  • Estimate transfer at the bitrate you plan to send, and allow for protocol overhead and any other traffic on the VPS.
  • Check whether the provider counts outbound traffic, what happens when the included allowance is exceeded, and whether additional transfer is available.
  • Compare the total monthly cost, including tax and any IPv4 charge, rather than comparing headline prices alone.
  • Choose a server region based on your audience and the network route to YouTube; the available listings do not establish which route or provider performs best.

Choose FFmpeg or OBS for the workload

FFmpeg for a simple radio loop

A headless Linux VPS running FFmpeg is a practical starting point when you have a radio audio URL and a static image or pre-rendered visual. The cited technical guide describes combining image and audio inputs, encoding the stream, and sending it to YouTube. It recommends running the process under a service manager with automatic restart, protecting the stream key, rotating logs, and monitoring YouTube’s stream-health indicators. A process that is still running does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

OBS for interactive or scene-heavy visuals

OBS offers a visual configuration workflow for scenes, browser overlays, and other sources, but on a headless VPS it also requires a desktop session and more resources than a simple fixed FFmpeg loop. A provider-authored 2026 guide suggests 2 vCPU and 2–4 GB RAM for a static FFmpeg loop, 4 vCPU and 8 GB for 720p OBS scenes, and 6 vCPU and 12 GB for 1080p OBS with browser sources. Treat those as that publisher’s starting recommendations, not universal minimums or tested guarantees.

For a single pre-encoded visual loop, extra compute may not help if monthly transfer is the binding limit. Larger tiers are more relevant when using heavier OBS scenes, higher resolution or frame rates, multiple streams, or other workloads.

Configure the YouTube stream and test it

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), supported codecs, and a two-second keyframe interval. Its page recommends 6 Mbps H.264 for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30. Use a bitrate appropriate to the resolution and frame rate you actually send, and check YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the full settings and supported options: YouTube Live encoder settings.

  1. Prepare the source. Confirm the radio audio URL works from the VPS and that the image or looped visual is available on the server. Test the stream with representative audio and video motion rather than relying on a process-start message.
  2. Set the encoder output. Configure the chosen resolution and frame rate, H.264 video where appropriate, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and the matching audio/video parameters supported by YouTube. Use RTMPS when available.
  3. Use the YouTube stream key securely. Copy the key from the appropriate YouTube Live control-room setup into the encoder destination. Do not publish it in a script repository, public log, or message; anyone who obtains it may be able to send to your stream.
  4. Preflight and monitor. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its guidance says tests should include audio and video motion similar to the actual stream and recommends monitoring stream health. Start privately or use the available test workflow before relying on a continuous public broadcast.
  5. Make the process recoverable. On Linux, use a service manager to restart FFmpeg after an unexpected exit, rotate logs, and check both server-side process status and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Automatic process restart cannot repair an invalid key, failed source URL, or persistent network problem.

YouTube recommends streaming with RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. The full protocol and encoder guidance is on YouTube Help.

Protect the channel and clear the music

A continuous radio broadcast still needs a video signal for this audio-led workflow; a static background image or looped video can supply it. That requirement is described in a technical how-to, rather than established here as a quotation from YouTube policy.

Confirm that you have the necessary rights to stream each recording and composition in the territories where your broadcast is available. A technical guide warns that Content ID can mute, interrupt, or monetize streams; those outcomes may affect a broadcast even when the audio is technically configured correctly. Consult relevant rights holders and local licensing authorities for your repertoire and territories. The technical guide is not legal advice.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube reports an unhealthy or missing signal: check the destination URL and stream key, the encoder’s connection output, and the source audio and video. A running FFmpeg process alone is not proof of a healthy ingest.
  • The stream stops after a period of time: inspect service-manager status and logs, source URL availability, and provider network or transfer limits. Configure restart behavior, but identify and address recurring source or network failures rather than relying on restarts alone.
  • The VPS bill is higher than expected: review outbound transfer, overage terms, tax, and IPv4 charges. Recalculate monthly transfer using the actual bitrate and continuous runtime.
  • OBS is overloaded or difficult to administer: reduce scene complexity or move to a plan with more headroom, then test again. For a static loop, consider whether FFmpeg avoids the desktop-session and GUI overhead you do not need.
  • Audio is muted, interrupted, or monetized: investigate rights and Content ID claims with the relevant rights holders and YouTube’s channel tools; changing VPS specifications will not resolve a rights issue.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want to maintain a Linux VPS or keep a computer running at home, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping to YouTube from the cloud. The setup is three steps: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
