Can a Raspberry Pi 5 Loop Children’s Videos on YouTube Live All Day?

A Pi 5 can send a looping playlist to YouTube Live, but its documented video features do not guarantee an all-day stream. Set up the encoder, test the real workload and plan for YouTube’s audience and archive rules.

Yes, in principle: a Raspberry Pi 5 can play prerecorded videos in a loop and send them to YouTube Live using an encoder. But the board’s documented hardware video feature is HEVC decoding, not hardware encoding, and the available evidence does not establish that a particular Pi 5 setup will run reliably all day. Test the exact playlist, output settings, cooling and internet connection you plan to use before relying on it.

What the Pi 5 can—and cannot—tell you

Raspberry Pi’s computer documentation says, “The Raspberry Pi 5 has H.265 (HEVC) hardware decoding.” Decoding video for playback is different from encoding a live stream. Raspberry Pi’s indexed H.264 performance note reports software encoding of 1080p at 30 frames per second on a single CPU core in real time. That vendor-published result is not an independent test of a continuous YouTube stream, and it does not establish all-day reliability for your playlist or configuration. Raspberry Pi computer documentation

Actual performance depends on the source files, whether they need transcoding, output resolution and frame rate, encoder settings, cooling, power and network stability. No particular Pi 5 memory size, power supply, cooling setup, software command or operating duration is established as a guaranteed solution. For a simple loop, avoid unnecessary transcoding where the media and workflow allow it, and start with a modest output such as 720p30 or 1080p30.

Set up the YouTube stream and encoder

  1. Check channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16. Initial live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your intended start. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  2. Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Use YouTube’s encoder workflow to create or schedule the live stream. Copy its server URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a screen recording.
  3. Configure the Pi workflow. Use an encoder that can play the local video files repeatedly and send a continuous RTMP or RTMPS feed. Choose a supported codec and output profile; do not assume that hardware HEVC decoding means the Pi hardware-encodes your live output.
  4. Start with a profile you can sustain. YouTube’s published H.264 reference settings are shown below. They are platform guidance, not a promise that your connection or Pi can sustain the selected profile.
  5. Run a representative test. Use the actual files, motion, audio, resolution and frame rate intended for the broadcast. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and the Pi’s CPU load, temperature and dropped frames during an extended test before leaving it unattended. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream. YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance
Output profile YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps recommended; 2 Mbps minimum
480p at 30 fps 4 Mbps recommended; 0.4 Mbps minimum

The 480p figures are YouTube’s published settings even though the recommended value is higher than the listed minimum. For all three profiles, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. It advises matching stream quality to the available connection and checking upload speed. Its encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 or AV1, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission.

Set the audience and use content you can stream

Classify children’s content accurately

In YouTube Studio, set whether the content is Made for Kids, regardless of where you or your viewers are located. YouTube advises creators to classify content accurately rather than rely on automated systems. The audience setting affects features: on a Made for Kids live stream, live chat, chat replay, Super Chat, comments on stream archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications are disabled. Personalized ads are also disabled, although contextual ads may be shown. See YouTube’s audience-setting guidance.

Copyright permission and monetization are separate

Use only video and audio you have rights to stream. YouTube identifies an active copyright strike or a match to another copyrighted live broadcast as reasons live streaming may be restricted. Separately, its Partner Program policy says highly repetitive or reused content may not qualify for monetization. Having a copy of a video or permission to use it does not, by itself, establish monetization eligibility. See YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions guidance and YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Plan around testing, interruptions and archives

  • Before the broadcast: Test the full playlist and verify the stream appears healthy in YouTube Studio. A short test may miss heat, load or connectivity problems that emerge during longer operation.
  • During the broadcast: Check stream-health messages, CPU temperature and load, dropped frames and internet stability. If health degrades, lower the output profile or address the limiting factor, then test again.
  • If YouTube disconnects: A local encoder workflow depends on the Pi and its connection sending the stream. Check the Pi, network and YouTube health status, then restart or reconnect the encoder as appropriate; do not assume the setup will recover automatically.
  • If you need an archive: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise that one stream longer than 12 hours will be saved. If preserving the broadcast matters, do not assume a single all-day stream will produce an archive; plan around the documented limit and confirm current Studio behavior. Choose between the Pi and other continuous-stream options

The Pi gives you local control, but it keeps the workload and connection dependence at home. YouTube’s encoder information also lists cloud streaming for continuous prerecorded video and dedicated hardware with scheduled prerecorded-media support. A listing on YouTube’s page is not an endorsement.

Approach What it changes What to weigh
StreamNeo — first option to consider Runs a prerecorded YouTube stream from the cloud; upload videos, add the stream key and go live. Always on from the cloud, any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with the first day free. Cloud service rather than a Pi-based setup; see plan details at StreamNeo.
Software encoder on a Raspberry Pi 5 Plays local files and sends a continuous stream through an encoder. Depends on the Pi’s software-encoding load, cooling, power and home uplink; requires testing and monitoring.
Cloud service listed by YouTube YouTube lists Gyre as an option for 24/7 prerecorded streams. Check the service’s current features, availability and terms directly; YouTube’s listing is not an endorsement.
Dedicated hardware YouTube lists AJA HELO Plus as hardware that can schedule prerecorded media. Consider upfront and ongoing costs, local control, monitoring and recovery needs; the listing does not establish suitability for every channel.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload your video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. The same product is included on every plan; only the billing period changes. Frequently Asked Questions

Will YouTube archive a continuous broadcast longer than 12 hours?

YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; it does not promise an archive for a longer single stream.

Does hardware HEVC decoding mean the Pi 5 hardware-encodes a YouTube stream?

No. The documented HEVC capability is decoding. The cited H.264 1080p30 result is software encoding, not evidence of hardware encoding.
