How to Troubleshoot Switchboard Live YouTube Stream Key Errors

Diagnose Switchboard Live stream-key errors by checking the workflow credentials and incoming signal first, then follow YouTube’s destination and stream-health messages.

First identify which connection is failing: your encoder sends video to a Switchboard workflow using that workflow’s URL and key; Switchboard then sends the stream to YouTube using a separate destination connection. If Switchboard shows no incoming video, check the encoder-to-workflow credentials and signal. If Switchboard receives video but YouTube does not go live, investigate the YouTube destination and stream health instead.

Understand which stream key is failing

A Switchboard Live broadcast has two connection layers. The encoder connects to a specific Switchboard workflow with that workflow’s server URL and stream key. Switchboard then routes the received video to YouTube. These credentials are distinct; a YouTube key is not a substitute for the Switchboard workflow key, or vice versa. Each Switchboard workflow has its own URL-and-key pair. Switchboard’s Workflow Page guide explains where to view and reset workflow credentials.

Check whether Switchboard is receiving video

  1. Open the intended workflow in Switchboard. Reveal its key in the workflow pane and check the workflow URL and key against the encoder’s stream settings. Switchboard’s initial setup guide describes copying the workflow URL and key into the encoder.
  2. Send a test signal from the encoder. Watch the workflow’s Confidence Monitor and status. If the monitor shows video and the status changes from “Not Receiving” to “Receiving,” the encoder-to-Switchboard connection is working. This confirms incoming video; it does not, by itself, take the YouTube destination live. Switchboard keeps its Go Live button disabled until it detects incoming video. See the Workflow Page guide.
  3. If there is no incoming video, stay on the encoder-to-Switchboard leg. Confirm the encoder is sending to the selected workflow, re-enter that workflow’s exact URL and key, and verify the encoder is running. Check whether another encoder is already sending to the same workflow: Switchboard’s FAQ says one workflow can receive content from only one encoder at a time. If you use multiple encoders, each workflow has its own credential pair. Switchboard’s FAQ covers these workflow limitations.

Reset a Switchboard workflow key safely

If the workflow key is incorrect or has been reset, use the key shown for that workflow—not the YouTube key. Switchboard says resetting the workflow key generates a new one. Copy the new key into the encoder before the next broadcast; the old value will no longer be the credential to use for that workflow. Confirm the encoder is using the corresponding workflow URL as well, then send a test signal and check for “Receiving” in Switchboard. The workflow instructions describe revealing and resetting the key.

If Switchboard receives video but YouTube does not go live

Once Switchboard’s Confidence Monitor shows incoming video, shift attention to the YouTube destination rather than repeatedly changing the Switchboard workflow key. Open YouTube Live Control Room and read the displayed stream health or error message. YouTube recommends checking the encoder software version, the feed’s picture and sound, encoder errors and CPU load, the quality of a local recording, and outbound internet strength. A healthy-looking encoder preview does not rule out a problem delivering the feed over the outbound connection. Follow YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

Match the fix to YouTube’s reported configuration error

YouTube’s error messages can point to unsupported audio or video codecs, an incorrect codec profile, a bitrate or resolution that does not match the selected settings, or primary and backup streams with mismatched parameters. Use the specific message in Live Control Room to identify which encoder setting to correct. Avoid changing unrelated settings speculatively. Consult YouTube’s live-stream error message guide for the reported error and its explanation.

Refresh the YouTube key only when the destination points to it

If YouTube’s error indicates its stream key is invalid, obtain a new key in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder as YouTube directs. This is a YouTube destination credential, separate from the key used to send video into Switchboard. Do not reset the Switchboard workflow key to solve a YouTube-key error unless the encoder-to-Switchboard connection is also failing. YouTube’s troubleshooting page includes its guidance to get a new key and update the encoder.

If YouTube schedules the stream instead of going live

Switchboard’s FAQ identifies a missing stream title in the active template as a cause of this symptom. Stop the stream, update the YouTube title in the designated field, and try again. See Switchboard’s FAQ. If YouTube displays another specific error, use that message to guide the next check rather than assuming the title is the only possible cause.

Common symptoms and next checks

What you see Where to investigate Next check
Switchboard says “Not Receiving” or its monitor has no video Encoder-to-Switchboard workflow Verify the selected workflow’s URL and key in the encoder, confirm it is sending, and check whether another encoder is using that workflow.
Switchboard shows “Receiving,” but YouTube does not go live YouTube destination or outbound delivery Read the Live Control Room health/error message; check YouTube credentials, encoder status and settings, and outbound internet delivery as indicated.
YouTube reports a codec, profile, bitrate, resolution, or primary/backup mismatch Encoder-to-YouTube stream configuration Correct the setting named in YouTube’s error message and consult its error guide.
The stream is scheduled rather than live Active Switchboard template and YouTube title Stop the stream and update the YouTube title in the designated field.
YouTube reports “Daily live stream limit achieved” YouTube channel limit YouTube says this message means the channel has reached a limit on the number of live streams it can create in a 24-hour period. It is not a Switchboard workflow-key mismatch. See YouTube’s error guide.

When and how to escalate

  • No video reaches Switchboard after checking the workflow credentials: use Switchboard’s help button to open its knowledge base or submit a support ticket. Include the workflow involved, encoder status, and whether the Confidence Monitor shows a signal. Switchboard’s workflow guide describes the page and its status indicators.
  • Switchboard receives video, but YouTube reports an error: use YouTube’s report-a-problem path and include the exact message shown in Live Control Room. Note whether the encoder preview and outbound connection checks indicate a healthy feed. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance covers encoder and connection checks.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a different use case—keeping uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream—StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not replace troubleshooting a Switchboard workflow or send a camera feed. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
