A “connection timed out” error does not prove that YouTube’s ingest port 1935 is blocked. Check the current ingest URL and protocol, test the VPS’s outbound path to that exact destination, and verify local or provider-level egress rules. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS, recommends RTMPS for encryption, and documents port 443 as an option for certain RTMPS SSL errors—not as a universal replacement for every connection problem.
What a timeout does—and does not—tell you
A timeout means the connection attempt did not complete in time. It does not identify whether the cause is an incorrect endpoint, an encoder configuration or compatibility issue, a local firewall, a VPS provider’s outbound filtering, or another network problem. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance advises checking outbound connectivity, while its RTMPS help also calls out verifying the URL and encoder support.
Do not assume every YouTube ingest endpoint requires port 1935, or that your VPS provider blocks that port. The available YouTube guidance does not establish either as a universal rule, and no particular provider’s policy can be inferred without checking with that provider.
Check the stream setup before changing firewall rules
- Copy the current ingest details. Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the stream key and ingestion URL for the stream. Use the current endpoint shown there rather than an old URL saved in an encoder profile.
- Confirm the protocol. Check whether the encoder is configured for RTMP or RTMPS, and confirm that it supports the selected protocol. YouTube describes RTMPS as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol” in its RTMPS help; its encoder settings recommend RTMPS for encryption.
- Check the endpoint and port together. The relevant test is outbound connectivity from the VPS to the exact server and port in use. Testing an unrelated host, or scanning the VPS from outside for an open inbound port, does not establish whether the VPS can make the required outbound connection.
Test outbound connectivity from the VPS
Use a network test appropriate to the operating system and tools installed on the VPS, targeting the host and port in the current YouTube ingestion URL. No single command works across all VPS operating systems, endpoint formats, or YouTube ingest configurations; do not substitute a generic test against an unrelated server.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- If the exact outbound connection cannot be established, check the VPS operating system’s outbound firewall rules and any cloud firewall or security-group rules attached to the instance.
- If those rules allow the traffic, ask the hosting provider whether outbound TCP connections to that destination and port are filtered or restricted on your plan or network.
- If the connection test succeeds but the encoder still times out, re-check the URL, stream key, protocol selection, and encoder support rather than treating the successful port test as proof that the stream setup is correct.
YouTube’s live troubleshooting guidance also points users toward checking outbound connectivity and contacting their internet service provider when network issues are found. For a VPS, the hosting provider is the relevant party to ask about provider-level egress policy.
When RTMPS on port 443 is worth trying
YouTube’s RTMPS help documents trying port 443 for certain SSL errors. Its RTMPS ingestion guide describes a TLS connection to port 443 at the server named in the ingestion URL. This is a targeted troubleshooting option: use the current RTMPS endpoint, and only configure it this way if your encoder supports RTMPS and YouTube’s current stream setup provides the appropriate URL. Port 443 is the registered HTTPS port, but that fact alone does not make every RTMP connection interchangeable with RTMPS.

If the specific error is a timeout rather than the documented SSL-error case, first verify the endpoint, protocol, and outbound route. Switching ports without matching the current RTMPS URL and encoder configuration can create a different setup error rather than fix the underlying one.
Consider HLS only as a separately configured option
YouTube also supports HLS ingestion using an HTTPS URL. It is a separate ingestion method, not a guaranteed way around every VPS network restriction. Consider it only if the encoder supports HLS and the stream is configured for HLS in YouTube Live Control Room. See YouTube’s HLS help for the method and its requirements.

After the connection works: check stream stability
A reachable destination port is necessary for that network path but does not ensure a stable stream. YouTube recommends sufficient upload bandwidth, a reliable connection, and about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. This is YouTube operational guidance, not a guarantee that a stream will remain healthy at a particular bitrate. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Run a test stream and monitor stream health using YouTube’s encoder guidance. If the ingest connection comes up but the stream is unstable, assess upload capacity and reliability separately from the original port-timeout diagnosis.

Common symptoms and next checks
| Symptom | What it establishes | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| “Connection timed out” | The connection attempt did not complete; it does not identify a port block by itself. | Verify the current URL and protocol, then test outbound connectivity from the VPS to that exact destination and port. |
| RTMPS SSL error | YouTube documents port 443 as a possible configuration for certain SSL-error cases. | Confirm RTMPS support and the current RTMPS endpoint, then try the documented port-443 configuration where applicable. |
| Outbound test to the exact endpoint fails | The tested route is not establishing a connection; it does not identify whether a local rule or provider policy is responsible. | Check host and cloud firewall rules, then ask the VPS provider about outbound TCP filtering for that destination and port. |
| Connection succeeds, but stream health is poor | Port reachability alone does not establish adequate streaming capacity or reliability. | Check upload bandwidth, YouTube’s recommended headroom, and stream health during a test. |
| Considering HLS | HLS is a distinct YouTube ingestion method and needs encoder support. | Configure HLS in Live Control Room and use the HTTPS URL if the encoder supports it. |
