If FFmpeg keeps replaying the first clip instead of moving through your playlist, check the input and command before changing YouTube settings. The concat demuxer normally reads its listed files in sequence; it does not inherently repeat the first one. The cause cannot be identified exactly without the command, playlist, FFmpeg version, logs, and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
First identify what is actually restarting
“Restarting the playlist” can describe several different symptoms. Watch the local FFmpeg output or inspect its logs and determine which one matches:
- The first clip repeats before later clips play: inspect the input FFmpeg opens, playlist contents and format, and where loop options are placed.
- The complete list starts over after its last entry: the list may be looping as configured. Decide whether that behavior is intended and check whether the order and entries match your expectations.
- The FFmpeg process exits and starts again: look beyond the playlist. A shell loop, service manager, container restart policy, or scheduler may be relaunching it.
- Local playback advances, but YouTube freezes, disconnects, or reports an error: treat this as an ingest or network problem until evidence points elsewhere.
Keep a short log excerpt spanning the transition or restart, and note whether the FFmpeg process ID changes. That distinguishes an input repeating inside one process from an external restart.
Check the command and the input it loops
FFmpeg input options apply to an input. Confirm which -i receives each option, especially -stream_loop, and verify that the file or playlist supplied to that input is the one you intend. A looped single MP4 is not the same configuration as a multi-entry concat list. An option associated with the wrong input can produce behavior that looks like a playlist error.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Also check for process-management rules that may launch FFmpeg again after it exits. If the PID changes at each restart, inspect the service, shell script, container policy, or scheduler rather than trying to fix the playlist alone.
Inspect the playlist file and its format
- Confirm the exact path passed to
-iand that the file contains every intended clip in the intended order. - Look for duplicate entries, unintended references to the first clip, missing files, and paths that do not resolve from the process’s working directory.
- Check which format FFmpeg is reading. An
.m3uor.m3u8playlist should not be assumed to have the same format or semantics as an FFmpeg concat script. - If using the concat demuxer, verify that the concat script syntax matches the FFmpeg manual for your installed version. The online FFmpeg manual is rolling and may differ from your build.
The concat demuxer reads files sequentially; a first clip that repeats points you toward the actual input, list contents or format, option placement, or process management—not to an inherent “repeat first file” behavior. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Check whether the clips can be concatenated directly
The concat demuxer virtually joins streams without re-encoding, so the files must have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. FFmpeg’s documentation says, “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” Differences between clips can cause trouble at joins; incorrect duration metadata can also result in gaps or artifacts.
If the source clips differ and need normalization, use the concat filter and re-encode rather than relying on demuxer stream-copy concatenation. That involves a different processing path and may require more compute. Consult the documentation matching your FFmpeg version before changing a working command. Do not substitute an exact “fixed” command without checking the actual playlist and inputs.

Separate FFmpeg output from YouTube ingest
Confirm that FFmpeg is still running and producing the expected video and audio locally. Then check YouTube Live Control Room at the timestamp when the viewer-facing stream stalls or disconnects. YouTube reports timestamped stream-health errors that can point to unsupported formats or codecs, missing or multiple streams, bitrate, audio or video settings, and keyframe frequency. Use the error and its timing to decide whether to investigate the input or the outgoing stream.
If the local output continues through the playlist while YouTube reports a health issue, changing playlist loop behavior blindly is unlikely to address the reported ingest problem. Match the encoder settings to YouTube’s current guidance for your codec, resolution, and frame rate; its recommendations can change.

Verify encoder settings and network headroom
- Rate control: YouTube currently recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for live encoder settings.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. These are configuration recommendations, not a guarantee against disconnects.
- Resolution and bitrate: use YouTube’s current settings and bitrate guidance for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
- Upload capacity: YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with a 20% margin above the stream bitrate, as well as a reliable connection. A connectivity disruption can break a stream.
Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and YouTube streaming tips. An unstable outbound connection is a separate problem from a playlist that selects the wrong file.

FFmpeg’s fifo pseudo-muxer can optionally attempt recovery after output failures. That may help when output encounters a network-related failure, but it cannot correct which input is looped, repair a malformed playlist, or make incompatible concat inputs match. Diagnose the input and output layers separately before adding recovery behavior.

What to collect before asking for help
- A redacted FFmpeg command, with the stream key removed.
- The output of
ffmpeg -version. - The playlist text and the format you intended it to use.
- A short FFmpeg log excerpt spanning the transition or restart.
- Whether the process PID changes when the symptom occurs.
- The matching timestamped YouTube Live Control Room health message.
Never post your YouTube stream key. Test changes privately or with an unlisted stream before applying them to a live public broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If keeping a computer and connection running at home is the part you want to avoid, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. This changes where the playlist runs; it does not diagnose or fix an incorrect FFmpeg command. Start your free StreamNeo day.
