YouTube Studio can schedule separate weekday and weekend live broadcasts, but it does not automatically switch a live feed between YouTube playlists by day of week. Schedule each broadcast in Studio, then use an encoder or playout system to send the correct, authorized cartoon lineup at the right time.
What YouTube can—and cannot—schedule
A YouTube playlist is a collection of videos; a scheduled live broadcast is an event with its own watch page. Scheduling the event does not make the videos in a channel playlist play as its live feed. YouTube’s scheduling and encoder guidance does not document a native setting to switch a live broadcast between two YouTube playlists on weekdays and weekends.
To run cartoons as a live stream, a separate production workflow must play the selected episodes and transmit that program to YouTube. It could be a manually operated encoder, a playout system, or custom software. YouTube’s Live Streaming API can manage broadcasts and their lifecycle, but that alone does not establish media playback or playlist scheduling. Before choosing an automation service, verify that it can schedule and play the required media lineup, handle your time zone, and deliver the feed to YouTube Live.
Set up separate weekday and weekend broadcasts
- Enable live streaming. Confirm that live streaming is enabled for your channel. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Schedule the weekday event. In YouTube Studio, go to Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream. Enter the weekday date and time, title, description, privacy, and audience setting. Make the time zone clear in the description or schedule announcement.
- Schedule the weekend event. Create a separate scheduled broadcast for the weekend slot, with its own date and time and the appropriate event details. You can reuse settings from a prior event where useful, but the event schedule does not select the cartoon lineup for you.
- Prepare the correct program feed. In your encoder or production system, arrange the authorized episodes in the order intended for that slot. Configure it to send the program to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. Treat the stream key like a password; do not publish it or share it with anyone who does not need access.
- Check the event before it begins. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours in advance and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. In Live Control Room, check the preview and confirm that the expected episodes, video, and audio are being sent.
- Manage the end and archive. Decide how the encoder will stop the feed and whether to leave the resulting archive public. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; streams longer than that may not be archived.
- Publish schedule changes. Tell viewers the recurring days, start times, and time zone. Update them when the schedule changes. YouTube recommends choosing a consistent, sustainable schedule and communicating changes.
Choose how to switch the cartoon lineup
Manual operation
For a small number of weekly broadcasts, an operator can prepare the weekday or weekend lineup in the encoder or production system before starting the feed. This is straightforward, but it requires someone to select the correct lineup and check the feed for each event.

Unattended playout or custom automation
If the lineup must switch without an operator, verify that the chosen playout workflow can schedule media changes—not merely create YouTube events. Check its playlist order, time-zone handling, start and stop behavior, and recovery after a computer or connection failure. If building custom software, treat broadcast management and media playout as separate jobs: the YouTube API’s broadcast functions do not, by themselves, play or select cartoon episodes.
Clear rights and set the audience accurately
Confirm live-stream rights for every episode
Only include cartoons you are authorized to stream live. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches; it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it if a match is detected and remains. A license does not necessarily prevent interruption: YouTube advises creators with licensed third-party content to ask the rights holder to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Check your agreement for the scope of rights, including territory, duration, and live streaming.

Use the correct made-for-kids setting
Do not assume that every cartoon is made for kids. Set the audience according to the actual content and intended audience. For a live stream marked made for kids, YouTube lists live chat and reminder notifications among the features that are disabled, and personalized ads are disabled. Account for those limits when planning viewer interaction and promotion.
Keep playlist information accurate
YouTube’s playlist rules still apply to collections of videos. A playlist may violate policy if its title or description misleads viewers about its videos, or if the videos are collected in a prohibited way. Label weekday and weekend schedules clearly and describe the contents honestly.

Common problems and fixes
- The scheduled event appears, but no cartoon plays. The event listing is not the program feed. Start and connect the encoder or playout system, then check the Live Control Room preview.
- The wrong lineup is on air. The feed workflow, not the YouTube playlist, determines what viewers see live. Confirm the selected playlist and episode order in the production system before sending the feed.
- The encoder cannot connect. Check that it is using the correct event’s stream URL and stream key, and that live streaming is enabled. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- The live stream is interrupted after starting. A third-party content match may be involved. Review the alert in Live Control Room and resolve the rights issue; if you have a license, ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting.
- Viewers cannot use chat or get reminders. Check the stream’s audience setting. YouTube disables live chat and reminder notifications for streams marked made for kids.
- The archive is missing. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, while longer streams may not be. Do not rely on an archive for a broadcast that may exceed that duration.
- The weekend switch happens at the wrong time. Confirm the event and playout schedule use the intended time zone, and verify the scheduled date and lineup in both systems before the broadcast.
