If YouTube reports a stream health problem while OBS shows dropped frames, first lower the video bitrate to what your upload connection can sustain, then test the Windows network path. OBS says it is extremely unlikely that OBS itself causes dropped frames. Network drops are different from rendering or encoding overload, so identify which signal is failing before changing settings.
Identify whether the problem is network drops or encoding overload
- In YouTube Live Control Room, note the warning text and timestamp. Red warnings are critical; yellow warnings are moderate. Use the message to identify whether YouTube is reporting a bitrate, format, or video-setting issue. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.
- Check OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection status. OBS defines dropped frames as the client failing to maintain a stable connection to the remote server or sustain the configured bitrate. A rising counter or intermittent disconnect points toward the connection or bitrate.
- Check OBS for an “encoding overloaded” warning. If the stream is choppy but the network-drop counter is not rising, investigate rendering or encoding performance instead.
- Compare timestamps: did the OBS symptom begin when YouTube issued its warning? Note whether it happens on every stream or only one. This helps distinguish a persistent connection fault from a particular ingest-setting mismatch.
OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide says: “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.”
Reduce the bitrate to match stable upload capacity
Change the OBS video bitrate
- In OBS on Windows, open Settings → Output.
- Reduce Video Bitrate, then apply the change. Base the decision on stable upload capacity, not just the best result from a one-off speed test. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a general starting heuristic; it is not a guarantee that the connection can sustain that rate continuously.
- Run a test stream and watch both the OBS dropped-frame counter and YouTube’s stream health. If drops continue, lower the bitrate again or test a lower resolution.
Use YouTube’s recommendations for the selected format
YouTube’s current encoder-settings table lists these recommended H.264 video bitrates. They are encoder recommendations, not universal minimum upload speeds; the required network capacity also needs room for audio and connection variation.
| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
Recommendations vary by codec, resolution, frame rate, and stream type. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the format you use. If the connection cannot sustain the chosen resolution’s bitrate, YouTube advises lowering resolution rather than forcing an unstable stream.

Test OBS’s Windows network options
- In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network.
- Try enabling Network Optimizations and TCP pacing. These Windows-only options may help some users; OBS notes they also provide additional troubleshooting detail in logs.
- Confirm Bind to IP is set to Default.
- As a diagnostic, set IP Family to IPv4 Only and test. If it does not improve the connection, return to the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting.
Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment (Beta) can reduce bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. OBS cautions that this does not fix the underlying connection problem and reduces video quality. Treat it as a fallback when you cannot resolve the connection fault, not as a substitute for diagnosis.
Isolate Wi-Fi, VPN, security software, and network utilities
- Wi-Fi: If practical, test with wired Ethernet to the router. An Ethernet cable is an optional way to remove Wi-Fi as a variable; it will not fix ISP route congestion, an incorrect bitrate, VPN interference, or OBS performance problems.
- VPN: Test with the VPN disabled. OBS notes that a VPN can make the connection unstable.
- Security software: Temporarily disable it only long enough to test whether it is interfering. Restore protection afterward; if the test identifies it as the cause, add an OBS exception using the security software’s supported method.
- Traffic-priority or “optimization” utilities: Check whether bundled software is deprioritizing OBS. OBS names Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software as examples. Follow OBS’s current guidance for the specific utility rather than uninstalling software indiscriminately.
- Network drivers: Install current drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer.
- Modem and router: Restart both. Cables, routers, modems, network cards, switches, and extenders can all be part of a faulty link; if you are unsure whether equipment needs replacing, consult your ISP first.
Change one variable at a time and repeat a test stream. That makes it easier to tell which change stopped the drops and whether the fix holds.

Match OBS output to YouTube’s ingest requirements
Use the specific Live Control Room warning to guide changes rather than adjusting unrelated settings. YouTube’s error guidance says format warnings can involve the codec or container; bitrate warnings depend on the selected resolution; and video warnings can involve stream count, interlacing, frame rate, keyframe frequency, or resolution.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a keyframe every 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Transport and codec: YouTube’s current encoder-settings page lists RTMP/RTMPS options including H.264, H.265, and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, and lists CBR and AAC or MP3 audio. Use the page’s format-specific guidance rather than assuming one setting fits every stream.
- Encrypted transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Test content: YouTube recommends testing with similar movement and audio before going live, then monitoring stream health during the event. As YouTube puts it, “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”
See YouTube’s encoder settings guide and its live streaming error messages for the current requirements and warning-specific details.

Use the OBS performance path only when its signals point there
An “encoding overloaded” warning, or choppy output without an increasing network-drop counter, points toward rendering or encoding load rather than internet packet loss. OBS explains that GPU overload or a system bottleneck can prevent it from rendering or encoding fast enough.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator.
- Close programs you know are using substantial GPU resources.
- If the overload persists, reduce output resolution or frame rate. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working.
These steps address GPU, rendering, or encoding load; they are not direct fixes for network packet loss. For details, see OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide.

When the drops persist
If the same drops continue after testing a wired connection where feasible, lowering bitrate, checking software interference, and restarting the modem and router, contact your ISP. Route congestion or ISP-side changes may be outside your control. Give support the timestamps of the drops, OBS logs, connection type, and the troubleshooting you have already completed.
