You can use a Synology NAS to broadcast a supported IP camera to YouTube through Surveillance Station’s Live Broadcast feature. That is different from looping prerecorded video: Synology documents a camera broadcast workflow, not a general-purpose video playlist broadcaster. For a prerecorded 24/7 loop, use a dedicated encoder or streaming service instead.
Choose the right setup for what you want to stream
| What you want to broadcast | Suitable approach | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| A live feed from an IP camera | Synology Surveillance Station Live Broadcast | Synology documents selecting a camera and stream profile. Its Live Broadcast documentation says YouTube streaming supports H.264 video. |
| A loop of prerecorded videos | A dedicated encoder or cloud service designed for continuous prerecorded-video streaming | This is not the documented Synology Live Broadcast workflow. YouTube’s encoder directory lists services that describe this use, but its listing does not establish their uptime, pricing, or current availability. |
Before relying on the NAS workflow, check that your exact NAS model and installed Surveillance Station package support Live Broadcast. Synology’s current help page is version 8, and its specifications page covers DSM 7.4; neither source provides a complete compatibility matrix for every model and package combination.
What you need for a Synology camera broadcast
- A Synology NAS model and Surveillance Station installation that support Live Broadcast.
- A camera available in Surveillance Station, with a stream profile set to H.264. Synology identifies H.264 as the supported video format for this feature.
- A YouTube channel and a stream created or selected in YouTube Studio, so you can retrieve its server URL and stream key.
- A stable NAS network connection and sufficient upload capacity for the camera stream. The cited documentation does not establish a universal bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or bandwidth margin; use YouTube’s current recommendations in Live Control Room and monitor the stream’s health.

Set up a camera stream from Surveillance Station
- Enable Live Broadcast. In DSM, open Application Center, enable Surveillance Station’s Live Broadcast application, then open it. If the application or setting is missing, check model and package compatibility rather than assuming it is available on every NAS.
- Get the YouTube stream details. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live → Stream. Create or select the stream, then copy its server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter these details in the encoder’s server URL and stream-key fields.
- Enter the connection details in Synology. In Live Broadcast, open YouTube Settings and enter the RTMP path/server URL and the corresponding stream key. Match the details to the YouTube stream you intend to use.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not show it in screenshots, public configuration, or messages. If it is exposed, replace or rotate it through YouTube’s live-stream controls and update the NAS with the new key.
- Select the camera and profile. Under Live Stream Source, choose the camera and its stream profile. Confirm that the profile uses H.264 and that the NAS and camera can sustain the chosen stream.
- Start the broadcast and verify it. Turn on Live Broadcast, then check the preview and stream status in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that video is arriving and that YouTube reports a healthy stream before treating the setup as ready.
Synology’s help article describes the Live Broadcast workflow and states that YouTube Live supports H.264 video: Synology Live Broadcast documentation. YouTube’s setup instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Settings and continuity limits to check
- Codec: Use H.264 for the camera profile; Synology identifies it as the supported format for its Live Broadcast feature.
- Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate: No universal values are established by the cited Synology passages. Choose settings supported by the camera and NAS, then follow the current recommendations shown for the stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Stream key and URL: Use the server URL and key for the selected YouTube stream. A mismatch can prevent the encoder from connecting to the intended broadcast.
- Power and connectivity: A NAS-based broadcast depends on the NAS, camera, and local network remaining available. Treat power, internet interruptions, and recovery behavior as operational risks to evaluate; the cited sources do not establish a measured uptime or automatic recovery guarantee.
- Archive length: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended. Do not assume the same archiving outcome for a stream longer than 12 hours.
- Channel rights and policies: Use video and audio you have the rights to broadcast and follow YouTube’s current live-stream rules. A camera source does not exempt a broadcast from copyright or channel policy requirements.
Troubleshooting a Synology-to-YouTube stream
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Live Broadcast is not available in DSM | Model, DSM version, or Surveillance Station package support | Check the exact NAS model and installed package’s current compatibility information. The cited Synology pages do not establish support for every model. |
| YouTube does not receive video | Server URL, stream key, or broadcast selection | Compare the URL and key in YouTube Studio with the values entered in YouTube Settings in Live Broadcast. Ensure they belong to the intended stream. |
| Video is rejected or does not start correctly | Camera stream profile codec or compatibility | Confirm the selected profile is H.264, then check the camera and NAS support for that profile. |
| Preview is missing or stream health is poor | Camera availability, NAS load, or network capacity | Check the camera feed in Surveillance Station, verify the NAS and network are online, and review YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and current recommendations. |
| Broadcast stops after an interruption | Local power, internet, camera, or NAS recovery | Restore the failed component and check whether the broadcast resumes in YouTube Live Control Room. The cited sources do not promise automatic recovery from interruptions. |
For prerecorded 24/7 video, use a loop-capable workflow
If your goal is continuous playback of uploaded videos rather than a live camera, use an encoder or service designed to send prerecorded video as a live stream. YouTube’s official encoder directory lists cloud services for continuous prerecorded-video streaming, including Gyre. That directory establishes the category exists; it is not an independent assurance of a service’s reliability, price, or availability. Do not treat the Synology camera instructions above as a playlist-loop setup.

For a prerecorded YouTube loop, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping a NAS or computer responsible for playback: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
