For a YouTube-only prerecorded loop, OBS on a spare PC can play a local video repeatedly and send it straight to YouTube. Switchboard Live is useful when you want to route an encoder feed to multiple destinations or use its workflow controls, but it does not store or play your prerecorded video: OBS (or another encoder) still has to run locally. These distinctions follow from YouTube’s documented direct encoder setup and Switchboard’s documented routing workflow. If you only need to put one prerecorded loop on YouTube, Switchboard adds a layer without removing the need for the local encoder.
How to loop a video in OBS and send it directly to YouTube
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Recheck your channel’s current eligibility before setting up.
- Add the video in OBS. In the Sources panel, add a Media Source, select the local video file, and enable Loop. For a playlist of clips, OBS documents the VLC Video source and its loop-playlist option. VLC libraries must be installed for that source to appear.
- Set YouTube as the destination. In OBS stream settings, select YouTube and enter the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. YouTube recommends RTMPS where available. Treat the stream key as a password: do not share it or include it in a public recording or screenshot.
- Configure output and test. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency. Choose the bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to use, and make sure your upload connection can sustain it. Test the feed with representative motion and audio before going live, then watch YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Plan for replays separately. Keep a local recording backup and consider ending the broadcast before it reaches 12 hours if you need a dependable archive. YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; a single continuous loop is not a reliable promise of a complete replay.
How to route the OBS feed through Switchboard Live
- Create the Switchboard workflow. In Switchboard, create a workflow and Stream Group, connect YouTube and any other destinations you want, then copy the workflow’s stream URL and key.
- Point OBS at Switchboard. In OBS stream settings, choose the custom service option and paste in Switchboard’s URL and key. OBS now sends its encoder feed to Switchboard rather than directly to YouTube.
- Set up the same local loop. Add the prerecorded file as an OBS Media Source and turn on Loop. Switchboard does not store the video, so OBS must keep playing and sending it.
- Confirm the incoming feed. Use Switchboard’s confidence monitor to verify that the encoder feed is arriving. Then start YouTube and any other destinations selected in the workflow.
- Verify continuous-stream terms. Switchboard’s public pricing page lists 24/7 Streams under Enterprise but does not publish a price. Confirm that the plan and its limits match your intended duration before relying on it for a continuous stream.
OBS settings that matter for a stable feed
Bitrate depends on the actual output
YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance recommends 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. For H.264 at 1080p60, it lists 6 Mbps as the minimum and 17 Mbps as recommended. These are YouTube configuration recommendations, not guarantees about what a particular PC or connection can sustain. The recommended bitrate varies with resolution, frame rate, and codec.
Keyframes, rate control, and frame rate
Use CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency, as YouTube recommends. Switchboard’s initial setup guide also recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe rate, and 30 or 60 fps; its OBS examples are generic and may need adjustment for upload speed and destination requirements. Test the settings with the exact output you plan to use rather than assuming a spare PC is adequate based on its age or model.

Test the full path, not just playback
- Check that the video loops as expected and that audio does not cut out or drift.
- Test the upload bitrate and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages.
- For Switchboard, confirm the confidence monitor receives the feed before starting destinations.
- Check the PC, OBS encoder settings, source-file format, and network conditions together; suitability cannot be determined without those details.
Copyright, reused content, and channel readiness
A loop does not grant permission to rebroadcast its picture or audio. YouTube’s live-stream terms require creators to have the necessary rights for live and archived content, including music, and to follow Community Guidelines and applicable requirements. Use only material you own or are authorized to stream. Repeating a clip does not change its rights status.
Check the channel’s live-stream eligibility before configuring either workflow. YouTube’s getting-started guidance identifies verification and no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days as prerequisites; restrictions and eligibility can change, so check the current status for your channel.
