YouTube Stream Health Warning for a 720p Loop: Bitrate and Resolution Checks

YouTube’s 720p live bitrate recommendations depend on codec, not frame rate. Check encoder output and the exact Live Control Room warning before changing settings.

If YouTube warns about a 720p live loop, check what your encoder is actually sending: codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode, bitrate and keyframe interval. For live ingestion, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for 720p H.264 or 6 Mbps for 720p AV1/H.265; its listed minimums are 3 Mbps and 2 Mbps, respectively. Those figures are the same at 30 and 60 fps. Then read the exact warning in Live Control Room: the health label alone does not establish that bitrate is the cause.

Use YouTube’s live-ingestion settings, not upload-file settings

A live stream is sent from an encoder to YouTube’s ingestion system. The bitrate recommendations for that connection are different from recommendations for uploading a prerecorded video file. For a 720p loop going live, use YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table.

Live video codec 720p at 30 fps 720p at 60 fps
H.264 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended
AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 2 Mbps minimum; 6 Mbps recommended 2 Mbps minimum; 6 Mbps recommended

These are YouTube’s published live-ingestion ranges; the source page shows no publication year. The recommendations do not guarantee a warning-free stream or prove that a particular internet connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. YouTube advises choosing a reliable quality for your connection and testing upload capacity.

Do not substitute YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations: that page lists 5 Mbps for standard-frame-rate 720p uploads and 7.5 Mbps for high-frame-rate 720p uploads. Those figures concern video files being uploaded, not a live encoder sending a stream.

Check the encoder settings that determine the outgoing stream

Compare the settings in your encoder with the live guide and with the signal YouTube detects. Labels and menus vary by encoder, but these are the values to verify:

  • Resolution: confirm the outgoing video is 720p, rather than relying only on the resolution of the source file or the player’s quality menu.
  • Frame rate: confirm whether the encoder is sending 30 or 60 fps. YouTube lists the same 720p bitrate ranges for both in the table above.
  • Codec: identify whether the encoder sends H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1, then use the corresponding bitrate range. Do not apply the H.264 recommendation to a different codec.
  • Bitrate and mode: set a bitrate within the range for the selected codec and use constant bitrate (CBR), which YouTube lists for live encoding. A setting inside the recommended range is a starting point, not a guarantee of stable delivery.
  • Keyframes: set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says it should not exceed four seconds.
  • Audio and color, where applicable: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. For SDR, it lists Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth.

YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and lists video frame rates up to 60 fps. Encoder interfaces may use different names for the same settings, so consult the encoder’s own documentation if a control is unclear. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the general encoder workflow.

Verify resolution detection and the stream key setup

YouTube normally detects the encoder’s resolution and frame rate automatically. If you need to select them manually, YouTube’s live encoder documentation says to use a custom stream key and turn on manual settings under Stream Resolution in Live Control Room.

  1. Check the encoder output. Confirm the resolution and frame rate it is sending, not just the properties of the loop file.
  2. Check YouTube’s selected or detected values. Compare those values with the encoder output. If you have manually selected a stream resolution, make sure it matches what the encoder sends.
  3. Check the connection details. The stream URL belongs in the encoder’s connection settings, along with the correct stream key. YouTube describes these settings in Manage live stream settings.
  4. Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it or show it in a screenshot. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the encoder before going live.

Resolution or frame-rate mismatches are worth correcting, but the warning itself does not identify which setting is wrong. Use the actual status text and encoder output to narrow the diagnosis.

Read the actual Live Control Room warning

The Live Control Room shows stream health and status. YouTube’s live metrics documentation says the stream status can include specific error messages and instructions. Read that message and follow its guidance rather than treating “stream health” as a diagnosis: the available guidance does not map every warning to a single cause, and not every warning means the bitrate is too low.

Also keep latency separate from encoder resolution and bitrate. YouTube describes latency as the delay between capture and playback; choosing lower latency can mean more playback buffering. If viewers report buffering, consider latency as well as encoder output and network stability, instead of changing bitrate without checking the evidence.

Test the actual loop before starting

YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with the intended loop and its audio, and include movement similar to what the eventual stream contains. A still image alone may not represent the content or audio behavior of the full loop. YouTube does not publish a separate bitrate setting for a static picture or a looping video; its live table is organized by codec, resolution and frame rate.

  1. Start a test using the same encoder, stream settings, loop and audio intended for the event.
  2. Check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public stream.
  3. Confirm the detected or manually selected resolution and frame rate, then verify the outgoing codec, bitrate mode, bitrate and keyframe interval in the encoder.
  4. During the test and the live event, monitor stream health and read any new status messages. YouTube advises: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”
  5. Check that the event can be opened from the channel or watch page and on a mobile device; YouTube includes these among its live-stream preflight tips.

Troubleshoot by checking the evidence in order

  • The health panel shows a warning, but the bitrate appears correct: read the specific status message first. Then verify actual encoder output, detected resolution and frame rate, codec, CBR mode and keyframe interval. The warning label alone is not enough to assign a cause.
  • YouTube detects a different resolution or frame rate: inspect the encoder’s output settings and compare them with YouTube’s detected values. If using manual selection, check the custom stream key and Stream Resolution setting in Live Control Room.
  • The bitrate is below the live recommendation: compare it with the codec-specific 720p range. If the connection cannot reliably sustain the recommended value, YouTube advises choosing a quality that is reliable for the available connection rather than assuming a higher setting will fix delivery.
  • The stream uses variable bitrate or an unsuitable keyframe interval: check that bitrate encoding is CBR and that keyframes are set at two seconds, not more than four seconds, as listed in YouTube’s live guide.
  • The encoder connects but viewers report buffering: monitor health and review the status message, then check network capacity and latency. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering; buffering alone does not establish a resolution mismatch.
  • The preview is missing or the event is hard to access: check the encoder’s stream URL and key, confirm the event is active in Live Control Room, and test access through the channel or watch page and a mobile device.
