If YouTube says “Please correct the sample rate for audio in the stream to 44.1 KHz,” set the encoder’s outgoing audio sample rate to 44.1 kHz for a stereo live stream. For live 5.1 surround sound, YouTube recommends 48 kHz instead. If you send primary and backup feeds, set both to the same sample rate.
Identify which audio setting applies
The right value depends on whether your live stream is stereo or 5.1 surround sound. YouTube’s live encoder recommendations are 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio. The warning itself explicitly asks for 44.1 kHz, so first confirm that the stream is configured as stereo rather than 5.1.
| Use case | Recommended live audio sample rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Stereo live stream | 44.1 kHz | YouTube’s live encoder recommendation; this is the rate named in the warning. |
| 5.1 live stream | 48 kHz | YouTube’s live recommendation for 5.1. Its dedicated 5.1 guidance specifies 384 Kbps; for RTMP ingestion, 5.1 is supported with AAC, while HLS supports AAC, AC3, and EAC3. |
These are live-stream settings, not upload settings. YouTube’s separate recommended encoding guidance for uploaded videos says 48 kHz, but that does not replace the 44.1 kHz recommendation for live stereo audio. YouTube’s live encoder recommendations and upload encoding guidance cover different workflows.
Fix the warning step by step
- Read the exact message in Live Control Room. YouTube displays live-stream errors by the Health Indicator in the Live Dashboard or Live Control Room. Note whether the warning asks for 44.1 kHz and whether it remains unresolved.
- Check the encoder’s outgoing audio sample rate. Find the audio sample-rate setting for the stream output—not just a project, source file, or playback device. For stereo, set it to 44.1 kHz. Encoder apps use different menus, so use the setting that controls the outgoing live stream rather than relying on a generic menu path.
- Check both feeds if you use primary and backup streams. YouTube flags a mismatch when primary and backup audio sample rates differ. Set both feeds to the same rate, appropriate to the stream format.
- Run a representative pre-stream test. Include audio and movement similar to the planned event. Check the Health Indicator and messages during the test, then confirm the stream status in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing before the event and monitoring health while it is live.
YouTube’s guidance covers the required rate and verification workflow, but does not specify app-specific hardware diagnostics. If the warning persists after the outgoing rate and both feeds match, investigate the encoder’s audio routing and device configuration. Do not assume that buying an audio interface or other hardware is necessary.

Check the streaming protocol only if you need to
YouTube’s live encoder recommendations cover RTMP/RTMPS; its HLS setup guidance gives the same sample-rate recommendations for stereo and 5.1. This warning by itself is not a reason to switch protocols. HLS has separate segment and transport requirements, so check its setup guidance if you are configuring HLS for other reasons.
Troubleshoot if the warning does not clear
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The warning asks for 44.1 kHz on a stereo stream. | The encoder’s outgoing stream sample rate may be set differently. | Set the outgoing audio to 44.1 kHz, then test and check the Health Indicator. |
| The primary feed is correct, but the warning remains with a backup feed configured. | Primary and backup sample rates may not match. | Set both feeds to the same sample rate and test again. |
| The stream is 5.1 surround sound. | The stereo value may not apply to this channel format. | Use YouTube’s 48 kHz recommendation for live 5.1 and verify the 5.1 audio requirements for your ingestion protocol. |
| You changed the upload’s audio setting, but the live warning remains. | Upload encoding and live streaming are separate workflows. | Change the live encoder’s outgoing setting; do not use the upload recommendation as a substitute for live stereo guidance. |
| The rate appears correct, but the message persists. | The configured source, routing, or output device may differ from the stream output you checked. | Trace the encoder’s audio routing and confirm the actual outgoing stream configuration, then retest in Live Control Room. |
YouTube’s Live streaming error messages page describes the warning and Health Indicator. Its live metrics guidance explains where to review stream status and messages.
