A Raspberry Pi can play a prerecorded video and send it to a YouTube Live event through an encoder. The basic workflow is to check channel eligibility, create the event in YouTube Studio, configure an encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and key, then test the preview before going public. A Raspberry Pi 5 can encode H.264 in software, but it has no hardware H.264 encoder, so test your chosen file and settings on the actual Pi before relying on it for a broadcast.
YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and encoder recommendations apply generally; the available guidance does not establish a separate India-only procedure. Use your local time zone when scheduling the event. The steps below are for a prerecorded file sent as a live encoder feed, not a camera broadcast.
Check that your YouTube channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s general eligibility guidance also says a person must be at least 16 to live stream. Check eligibility before preparing the Pi, since an encoder cannot bypass a channel restriction. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Create or schedule the YouTube event
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream. Choose the encoder workflow, rather than a webcam or mobile workflow.
- In the event’s Live Control Room, copy its server URL and stream key into your encoder’s YouTube output settings. Prefer the RTMPS server URL if your encoder supports it; RTMPS encrypts the RTMP connection using TLS. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not show it in screenshots, publish it in a repository, or leave it in shared command history. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting.
- Set the event’s title, visibility, description and start time, using the time zone relevant to your audience. Scheduling creates a watch page, but the encoder still has to send the video when the event begins.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after the encoder stops sending. For a longer broadcast, do not assume the same automatic archive behavior.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Prepare the video and Raspberry Pi
Put the prerecorded media on storage the Pi can read reliably, and use playback/streaming software capable of sending a continuous encoder feed to YouTube. The exact software settings depend on your Pi model, operating system, installed encoder build and the file’s video and audio codecs. Confirm that the file plays correctly and that the encoder can keep pace with it before scheduling a public event.
Pay particular attention to Raspberry Pi 5: it supports hardware H.265 decoding, but not hardware H.264 encoding. Raspberry Pi documents software H.264 encoding and says 1080p30 is achievable; that is not a guarantee for every combination of file playback, audio processing and encoder settings. Test the complete workload on the chosen device. Raspberry Pi’s H.264 performance note compares Pi 5 software encoding with Pi 4’s hardware H.264 encoder.

Do not choose a Pi based on resolution alone. Check whether your specific model can decode the source file, encode the outgoing stream at the intended frame rate, and sustain that workload without dropped frames. A Pi 5 is not a hardware H.264 encoder simply because it can play video or encode H.264 in software.
Set the encoder output for YouTube
YouTube’s baseline SDR guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and stereo AAC audio at 128 kbps. Set SDR color to Rec. 709. The keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings guide for details.

| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3–8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3–8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5–14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6–17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended video-bitrate ranges, not a promise that a particular Pi or network can sustain them. Audio also uses bandwidth. Choose a bitrate your upload connection and Pi can maintain, and test at the exact resolution, frame rate and media intended for the event. A 720p30 or 1080p30 target may be a more manageable starting point than higher frame rates, but that is practical guidance—not a Pi benchmark.
Check upload capacity and test before going live
Measure upload speed on the connection the Pi will actually use; download speed does not establish upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the stream’s needs. Network variation can still cause trouble, so a speed test alone is not a substitute for a sustained test. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

- Set the encoder to the intended resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio settings and keyframe interval.
- Start the encoder before the scheduled public start and open the event in Live Control Room.
- Wait for the preview, then check that picture and sound are present and that YouTube reports a healthy stream.
- Confirm the scheduled watch page is accessible to the intended audience and that visibility is correct.
- During the broadcast, monitor stream health and the Pi’s playback. Stop the encoder when the event is finished.
Copyright and reused-content checks
Being prerecorded does not give a video permission to use someone else’s material. Before streaming, confirm that you own or have permission for the video, music, game footage and other included assets, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and channel rules. A technical setup that successfully sends a feed does not establish that the content is eligible for monetization or exempt from YouTube policies.
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube will not allow the channel to start a live stream: verify the channel and check for a restriction in the last 90 days; also confirm that the account meets the age requirement.
- Encoder cannot connect: confirm you selected the correct event’s server URL and stream key, chose RTMPS if supported, and did not accidentally replace or expose the key.
- Preview is missing or stream health is poor: check the Pi’s upload capacity, lower the bitrate or output target, and retest with the same media. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom.
- Video stutters or frames are dropped: the Pi may not be keeping up with playback and software encoding. Test a lower resolution or frame rate, or use a device better suited to the workload; do not assume Pi 5 has hardware H.264 encoding.
- Picture works but audio is absent or problematic: check the source file’s audio track and encoder output; YouTube’s standard recommendation is stereo AAC at 128 kbps.
- Scheduled event has no video at its start time: scheduling alone does not send the prerecorded file. Start the encoder and verify its preview before the event begins.
