Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a live YouTube sleep stream, place FFmpeg’s loudnorm filter in the audio chain and start with I=-18:LRA=7:TP=-2. That is a practical starting point for subdued ambience—not a YouTube requirement. For a finished recording, measure it first and use a two-pass workflow when you want more reproducible, measurement-informed normalization.
What the loudnorm settings control
FFmpeg’s loudnorm filter implements EBU R128 loudness normalization. Its settings describe three different things:
I(integrated loudness): the target program level, expressed in LUFS.LRA(loudness range): the target range of loudness variation over time, expressed in LU.TP(true peak): the maximum target peak level, expressed in dBTP.
The suggested I=-18:LRA=7:TP=-2 can be a restrained starting point for rain, fan noise, or other sleep ambience. Adjust it to the recording and intended listening level: a target is not a promise that every sound will feel equally loud, nor a platform specification. FFmpeg’s own defaults are I=-24, LRA=7, and TP=-2; those are filter defaults, not YouTube upload requirements. See the FFmpeg loudnorm documentation.
YouTube’s official upload guidance reviewed here does not publish a required LUFS or true-peak target for creators. The often-repeated “-14 LUFS” figure should not be treated as an official YouTube requirement. See YouTube’s upload encoding guidance.

Normalize a live stream in one pass
For a continuous stream, use single-pass normalization in the FFmpeg audio filter chain that feeds your streaming output:
-af "loudnorm=I=-18:LRA=7:TP=-2:print_format=summary"
Keep your existing input, video, audio codec, and YouTube output settings; this fragment configures audio normalization and is not a complete streaming command by itself. Choose the targets for the material rather than increasing loudness just to make a quiet soundscape louder. Since single-pass processing is dynamic, listen for gain movement, pumping, or quiet details becoming distracting. Check representative transitions as well as the quietest and loudest sections.
FFmpeg’s dynamic mode upsamples internally to 192 kHz for true-peak detection. If you need a specific output sample rate, set it explicitly with -ar or an aresample filter; do not assume the internal detection rate determines your delivery rate. The filter’s single-pass and two-pass behavior is documented by the FFmpeg Project.

Normalize a finished recording with two passes
A completed file can be measured in full before rendering. This workflow makes normalization measurement-informed and can use linear gain when the filter’s constraints allow it.
1. Measure the source file
Run the analysis pass and ask for JSON output:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -af "loudnorm=I=-18:LRA=7:TP=-2:print_format=json" -f null -
Record the reported input_i, input_lra, input_tp, input_thresh, and target_offset values.
2. Render using the reported measurements
Insert the numeric measurements into the corresponding filter fields below. Replace every uppercase token; none should remain in the command:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -af "loudnorm=I=-18:LRA=7:TP=-2:measured_I=INPUT_I:measured_LRA=INPUT_LRA:measured_TP=INPUT_TP:measured_thresh=INPUT_THRESH:offset=OFFSET:linear=true:print_format=summary" -c:v copy -c:a aac -b:a 192k -ar 48000 output.mp4
Use input_i for measured_I, input_lra for measured_LRA, input_tp for measured_TP, input_thresh for measured_thresh, and target_offset for offset. Check the render summary to confirm that linear mode was actually selected. FFmpeg needs all four measured inputs for linear mode; it can fall back to dynamic mode if the target LRA is below the source LRA or if the required loudness change conflicts with the true-peak target. Do not assume that setting linear=true guarantees linear processing.
The example copies video and encodes audio as AAC at 192 kbps and 48 kHz. For a WAV output, substitute audio codec and output options appropriate to that file rather than retaining the MP4-oriented options. YouTube’s official upload guidance recommends AAC-LC at 128–256 kbps and a sample rate of 44.1 or 48 kHz; these are audio-delivery recommendations, not loudness targets. See YouTube Help.

Choose one pass or two
| Workflow | Best fit | What happens | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single pass | Continuous live stream or quick file conversion | The filter works on the running audio; its dynamic behavior can respond as the program changes. | One processing pipeline, but review changing sections for audible gain movement. |
| Two pass | Finished file where reproducibility and measurement-informed gain matter | The first pass measures the source; the second applies those measurements and may use linear gain if constraints allow. | Requires an analysis pass and a render pass; incompatible LRA or true-peak constraints can make FFmpeg revert to dynamic mode. |
This is a workflow choice, not a claim that one pass always sounds better. The FFmpeg documentation describes both single-pass use for livestreams and files and double-pass use for files.

Check the rendered and uploaded sound
- Listen across the whole range: review the quietest and loudest passages and transitions. Make sure normalization has not turned subtle rain, a fan, or a drone into an intrusive foreground sound.
- Measure the output: run
loudnormagain with summary or JSON output and inspect the output loudness, true peak, and selected normalization mode. - Check mono compatibility: confirm that the ambience still sounds coherent when folded down to mono. YouTube notes that stereo audio which folds down poorly can lose quality or be muted on devices that convert stereo playback to mono. See YouTube’s audio guidance.
- Inspect playback settings: where YouTube’s Stable volume control is available, turn it off while evaluating your mix without that player feature. YouTube says Stable volume balances quiet and loud ranges and may be unavailable for some videos. See YouTube’s Stable volume help.
- Use player diagnostics carefully: Stats for Nerds can help troubleshoot playback, but it does not establish a universal loudness target. See YouTube’s Stats for Nerds help.
YouTube also says certain audio enhancements may be applied, and viewer settings affect playback. Creator-side normalization cannot guarantee identical perceived dynamics across devices and accounts. See YouTube’s audio-enhancement information.

The result sounds like it is pumping
Single-pass normalization is dynamic, so changing material can produce audible level movement. Recheck the target against the actual ambience, listen to quiet-to-loud transitions, and avoid an aggressive loudness target chosen simply to make the stream louder. For a completed file, measure first and test a two-pass render.
The second pass reports dynamic mode
Check that the command includes all five measured fields: measured_I, measured_LRA, measured_TP, measured_thresh, and offset. Then inspect the summary: FFmpeg may still fall back to dynamic mode if the requested LRA is below the measured source LRA or the target true peak prevents the requested gain change.

The output sample rate is not what you intended
Dynamic true-peak detection’s internal 192 kHz upsampling is not a delivery-rate setting. Set the output explicitly with -ar or aresample, then check the rendered file’s audio properties.
The uploaded mix sounds different in the YouTube player
Check the playback device and account settings, inspect Stable volume where available, and use Stats for Nerds as a diagnostic display. Player behavior can affect perceived sound; it is not evidence of a different creator-side LUFS rule.
The ambience loses impact in mono
Inspect a mono fold-down before upload and adjust any stereo elements that cancel or become unclear. YouTube warns that poorly folding stereo audio can lose quality or be muted on devices that convert stereo playback to mono.
