In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream and copy its stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and paste the key. For a low-end PC, test first at 480p and 30 fps, then raise quality only if OBS and your upload connection stay stable.
Before you start: check your stream and connection
You need OBS installed, a YouTube channel that can go live, and an internet connection with enough stable upload capacity for your chosen bitrate. YouTube recommends choosing quality based on a reliable connection and testing with representative audio and movement before the broadcast. Its guidance does not establish one setting that will work for every PC or connection in India.
Check your upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube recommends leaving roughly 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate; other people or devices using the same connection can reduce what is available to OBS. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Get the YouTube stream key and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio. Create a live stream or select the stream you intend to use, then open its stream settings in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream key. YouTube uses the key to identify where the encoder sends its feed and to accept that feed. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not control the stream.
- Open OBS settings. Go to Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and paste the key into the stream-key field. Use the server option provided for YouTube if OBS asks you to select one.
- Apply the settings and connect. Click Apply and OK, then use Start Streaming in OBS. Check YouTube Live Control Room for the incoming feed and stream health before sharing the broadcast with viewers.
- Test before the real broadcast. Verify video, audio, movement, and stream health using the scene and connection conditions you expect to use live.
If someone exposes the key, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old key in OBS. YouTube documents stream-key management at Manage live stream settings.

Choose a conservative OBS output for a low-end PC
Start with H.264 at 480p and 30 fps. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance recommends 3 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps, with a listed minimum of 0.4 Mbps. If the PC and connection remain stable, try 720p at 30 fps; YouTube recommends 8 Mbps, with a listed minimum of 3 Mbps. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not guarantees that a particular computer or Indian internet connection can sustain the stream.

In OBS, open Settings > Output and configure the streaming encoder for H.264 and a constant bitrate (CBR). Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Set the bitrate to the trial target, then open Settings > Video and choose an output resolution and frame rate that match it. OBS labels can differ slightly by version and encoder, so confirm each setting in the installed build. Refer to YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

With a 3 Mbps stream, the roughly 20% upload headroom rule means you should have about 3.6 Mbps available for the stream, beyond competing use. With an 8 Mbps stream, allow about 9.6 Mbps. These figures are arithmetic applications of YouTube’s headroom recommendation, not measurements of any ISP or guarantee of stability.
Lower the PC workload if OBS struggles
Hardware encoding may move video-encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in a compatible GPU. Open Settings > Output and inspect the available encoder choices. Use a hardware encoder only if it is listed and supported by your system; do not assume a particular brand or encoder generation is available. Older hardware encoders can trade image quality for performance. OBS explains the trade-offs in its Hardware Encoding guide.

If OBS reports rendering or encoding overload, lower the output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, and reduce other GPU-heavy work. If 60 fps is failing, try 30 fps. OBS cautions that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee that a machine can stream at a given resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; see its encoding performance troubleshooting and system requirements.
Tell network drops apart from encoding overload
OBS’s Statistics window helps distinguish a connection problem from work the PC cannot finish. The remedies are different:

- Dropped frames or unstable stream connection: the network route may be unstable, or the bitrate may exceed sustained upload capacity. Check upload use, reduce the bitrate, and inspect OBS statistics and YouTube stream health. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting explains dynamic bitrate: it can lower bitrate during congestion but does not fix the underlying connection and may reduce picture quality. If your PC and router support Ethernet and the wireless link is unstable, a wired connection is one troubleshooting option, not a universal fix.
- Encoding or rendering overload: the PC is struggling to render the scene or encode video. Lower resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, and reduce competing CPU or GPU work instead of treating it as an upload-speed problem.
Change one setting at a time, test again, and monitor stream health. That makes it easier to identify whether a change actually resolved the problem.
